Dideriksen looking to prove world title wasn't a
fluke.
"Amalie
Dideriksen surprised even herself when she beat Kirsten Wild
to take victory in the women's road race at the World
Championships last October.
Wild had been the overwhelming favorite heading into Qatar and was backed by the always enviably strong Dutch squad, but the 20 year old Dideriksen, who had just two teammates and had won just one race that season, played it perfectly and accelerated past her rival with 100 meters to go." Tested: DeSalvo Builder Special.
"In a
market seemingly saturated with bespoke frames and builders
ready to cater to your every whim (and charge a commensurate
price tag), Mike DeSalvo is a bit different.
DeSalvo builds custom titanium and steel bikes - he’s been doing so for more than 15 years, and teaches TIG welding at the United Bicycle Institute near his workshop in Ashland, Oregon." (bicycling.com) Matt Rainey February 10, 2017

50 top riders out of contract for 2018.
"It
might only be the second week of February, with a number of
riders yet to even start their racing campaigns, but that
hasn’t stopped the transfer market waking from its winter
hibernation.
Money never sleeps, as a poor sequel once said." (cyclingnews.com) (Photo: Tim De Waele) February 9, 2017
Boonen too busy to get nostalgic over looming
retirement.
"No time
for nostalgia yet, Tom Boonen is too busy.
The QuickStep Floors star says he’s too focused on training and preparation for his final shot at Paris Roubaix to be misty-eyed about his imminent retirement." (velonews.com) (Photo: Tim De Waele) February 9, 2017
Team leader at 22: Kasia Niewiadoma takes on new
role in Marianne Vos’ WM3 Pro Cycling Team.
"The
newly opened headquarters of Shimano Europe at the High Tech
Campus in Eindhoven, The Netherlands served as the decor for
the team presentation of Marianne Vos’ new team, WM3 Pro
Cycling.
Outside, the weather was grey and rainy but inside, floor-to-ceiling posters of the team’s recent camp in sunny Spain and the bubbly enthusiasm among the sponsors and riders alike send a clear message: the outlook for this new squad is bright." (cyclingtips.com.au) (Photo: Cor Vos) February 9, 2017

Bruyneel blasts LeMond for 'obsession' with
Armstrong and mechanical doping.

Bruyneel has poured scorn on Greg LeMond over his
involvement in recent investigations into mechanical doping,
labeling the American an ‘asshole’ and arguing that he has
an unnatural obsession with tarnishing the reputation of
Lance Armstrong."

2-Spoke M5 Wing-Shaped Carbon Wheelset.
"Touting
such claims as being “the lowest air resistance of all
existing wheels compared to 12 or 16 steel bladed spokes or
3, 4, 5, or 6 carbon bladed wheels and even disc wheels”,
the 2-Spoke carbon wheels are about as far-flung as any

Right-hand man: Roche dedicated to putting Porte
into Tour de France yellow.
"Nicolas
Roche is in a new role, yet it’s a familiar one.
For the past two seasons he was part of Team Sky and, in 2015, gave his all to help Chris Froome clock up the second of his Tour de France victories." (cyclingtips.com.au) Photography by Time de Waele, Tim Bardsley-Smith, Cor Vos and Shane Stokes February 8, 2017

This Is the Most Comfortable Heart Rate Monitor
I've Ever Worn.
"I
snapped it on, and the red and blue lights blinked almost
immediately, indicating that it had picked up my heart beat
(red) and was searching for my phone (blue), which it synced
with within seconds after launching the app and turning on
Bluetooth.
So, I went out for a ride. It worked great and didn’t bug me a bit. I’ve been a convert ever since - and I’ve never had to wet the sensors to get a reading; Just snap and go. That’s pretty cool." (bicycling.com) February 8, 2017

Megan Guarnier: 10 years in the making.
"In his
2008 book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell said that to
become an expert at something, a person must practice it for
10,000 hours.
A month later, Geoff Colvin published his own theory, making the bold statement that ‘talent is overrated’ and that focused practice plus time - over DNA - is what makes someone great at something." (cyclingnews.com) (Sean Robinson/Velofocus) February 7, 2017
Met Strale helmet review.
"The MET
Strale is the brand’s latest helmet and has been designed
around something called the Venturi effect - a fluid dynamic
principle that says when a fluid hits a choke point its
velocity will increase - and air enters the helmet through
the vents at the front to be channeled through the helmet
and out the back, which according to MET should speed up the
ejection of hot humid air from the rear exhaust ports." (bikeradar.com) (Colin Levitch

ISPO 2017 Roundup: Kuai Fit, Coros, Garmin,
Salming RunLAB, Digitsole, LG, Casio, Kettler, Bonx Grip, Wiralcam.
"Sunday
was a whirlwind day for me. As I noted previously, the
annual pilgrimage to the largest sporting show on earth
occurs in early February (this year anyway). And in my case,
I make it a one-day trip.
I leave Paris early in the morning on the roughly 1 hour flight to Munich, and then return later that same night. All of which allows me to pack in a day at ISPO." (dcrainmaker.com) February 7, 2017

Quintana’s game of risk.
"Along
with Australia’s Richie Porte, both riders appear on track
for the bigger tests to come later on this year.
Quintana surprised many when it was revealed by his Movistar team that he would target the Giro d'Italia Tour de France double in 2017, rather than taking on Froome with a single minded focus at the Tour." (sbs.com.au) February 6, 2017
Froome has quiet start to season in Australia.
"Chris
Froome is returning from Australia after the quietest start
to one of his seasons since 2012.
Froome won his season debut race every year for 2013-2016. He went on to win the Tour de France in July in three of those seasons, except for 2014 when he crashed in the opening stages and watched as Italian Vincenzo Nibali was crowned the winner." Against the Odds: Rider of the year.
"One of
the reasons that “against the odds” is possible in 2017 is
that cycling is a huge growth sport in the English speaking
world in general, and the UK in particular – and therefore
there are odds available for me to talk about for most major
races.
There will be some occasions, though, when it is fun to make predictions and no odds exist." (podiumcafe.com) Photo by Bryn Lennon/Getty Images February 6, 2017
Roundtable: Too windy for bike racing?
"The
winds of change are a blowin’ - now more than ever, pro
cycling races are being cancelled or truncated due to
extreme weather. In the last week, wind cancelled the Dubai
Tour’s stage 4 to Hatta Dam and led organizers to shorten
Volta a Valenciana’s final stage in Spain.
Are the riders just getting soft? Or is the sport finally moving toward a level of professionalism that actually prioritizes safety?" (velonews.com) (Photo: Tim De Waele) February 6, 2017
