Van Garderen reaches Giro’s promised land.
"Tejay
van Garderen erased years of frustration and close-calls
Thursday in one dramatic coup in the Dolomites.
After throwing in the towel on his GC hopes earlier during the 2017 Giro d’Italia, van Garderen regrouped to target breakaways, a high-risk bet in any grand tour. The stars aligned in the 137km 18th stage, and van Garderen packed the punch and tactical wile to pull off the biggest win of his career." (velonews.com) (Photo: Tim De Waele) May 25, 2017
Tom Dumoulin fends off Nairo Quintana’s attacks
as Tejay Van Garderen wins Giro d’Italia stage 18...
Giro d'Italia: Van Garderen wins in St. Ulrich.
"Tejay
van Garderen claimed his first career Grand Tour stage
victory on Thursday's 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia.
The BMC rider bested mountains classification leader Mikel Landa (Sky) at the finish line in Oristei after a long afternoon in the breakaway. Just over a minute later, race leader Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) arrived at the finish line on the same time as Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) after fiercely defending his pink jersey in the face of repeated attacks by his rivals." Five talking points from stage 18 of the Giro
d’Italia.
"Today
was the stage touted as being the great test of Tom Dumoulin
(Team Sunweb) - if he could survive the five summits on the
parcours with his pink jersey still intact, then he should
be the favorite to wear it in Milan.
The Dutchman passed with flying colors. He remained in the group of favorites on the final climb, and managed not only to follow attacks made by Nairo Quintana (Movistar), but was even able to toy with his rivals and make his own moves." (cyclingweekly.com) (Photo: Yuzuru Sunada) May 25, 2017
Seven talking points of the first half of the
Women’s WorldTour.
"As the
pro peloton is enjoying a little down time due to the
cancelled Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, it’s
time for us to reflect on the first half of the 2017 Women’s
WorldTour.
Ten events, of which two stage races, have already taken place, and we have 10 more still to go. Looking back on an exciting spring season, we saw breakout performances, new races, unpredictable race finishes and inspiring teamwork." (cyclingtips.com) (Photo: Cor Vos) May 25, 2017

Preview: Dumoulin and Sunweb face their toughest
challenge in the Dolomites.
"After
Tuesday's 222km marathon queen stage over the Stelvio and
the 219km transfer stage east on Wednesday, Tom Dumoulin's
grip on the maglia rosa will be tested in a much shorter but
far more intense stage in the Dolomites on Thursday." (cyclingnews.com)

How much could Tom Dumoulin afford to be behind
in final Giro d’Italia time trial?
"The
Dolomites remain, but Giro d’Italia race leader Tom Dumoulin
(Sunweb) looks further ahead to the final day’s time trial
to Milan and wonders how much he can afford to lose to the
others beforehand and still win the race’s pink jersey.
Cycling Weekly asked those at the race what they thought the time trial-strong Dutchman could gain on his rivals in the final 29.3km time trial." (cyclingweekly.com) May 25, 2017

Pro-Continental team Soul Brasil Pro Cycling will be
suspended for a second time in 12 months, with the UCI
confirming the team cannot race for 35 days, between July 15

200 bikes and a lot of cash: What it costs a
bike brand to sponsor a WorldTour team.
"You
probably know about omertà, the wall of silence that’s
surrounded doping in the pro peloton for most of a century.
But there’s a similar wall around the inner financial workings of pro cycling teams, particularly when it comes to things like rider salaries and sponsorship figures. Fiscal omertà is a fact of life throughout the 18 teams that make up the UCI WordTour." (cyclingtips.com) (Photo: Cor Vos) May 25, 2017

1 of the Baloise Belgium Tour proved to be a mixed affair

earlier this year, with a brand-new 9km uphill individual
time trial headlining the seven-day 2.HC race that will
climb more than 11,132 meters over 965.6km.
Although “America's Toughest Stage Race” will cover a lot of familiar terrain in 2017, the addition of the stage 3 individual time trial up Big Cottonwood Canyon will be a major shake-up." (cyclingnews.com) May 25, 2017

Giro d'Italia: Rolland takes solo victory on
stage 17.
"Finally,
after so many near misses, and so many setbacks, Pierre
Rolland delivered in Cannondale Drapac colors to win stage
17 of the Giro d’Italia in nail-biting fashion.
The 30-year-old was certainly forced to do it the hard way – attacking as part of a three-man move at the start of the 219km stage before jumping clear once more from a group of around 25 with 7.6km to go." (cyclingnews.com) May 24, 2017

Dumoulin: 'We don't know exactly what the
problem was'.
"Suffice
to say, Tom Dumoulin and his Giro d’Italia Odyssey is
headline news in the Netherlands.
Not even the presence of Ajax in a European final for the first time in 21 years seems to be detracting attention from the maglia rosa, whose crossover celebrity grew still further in the past 24 hours after an urgent toilet stop threatened to leave his challenge in tatters in the shadow of the Stelvio." Giro Stage 18: The Fiddler's Elbow.
"We’re
in the Dolomites for the ante-penultimate road stage, and if
you’re looking for flat racing, this isn't the day for you.

Pinot: I didn't have the legs to follow Nibali.
"Thibaut
Pinot (FDJ) might have closed the gap on overall leader Tom
Dumoulin on stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia.
However, after a tough day in the mountains, the Frenchman slipped off the podium after giving away 1:35 to stage winner Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida)." (cyclingnews.com) May 24, 2017
Bak wins 100 beers for conquering Stelvio.
"Lars
Bak (Lotto Soudal) was the lucky, or perhaps unlucky, rider
to win 100 beers for being the heaviest rider to complete
the Stelvio during Tuesday’s stage.
The Stelvio Bike Experience cafe put up the offer ahead of the Giro d’Italia and duly delivered, with Sporza’s man on the motorbike, Renaat Schotte, photographing the incident." (Photo: Tim De Waele) (cyclingnews.com) May 24, 2017

Ask the Pros: Should you wait when a rival has
problems?
"Stage
16 of the Giro d’Italia ended in controversy as Tom Dumoulin
(Team Sunweb) nearly lost the race lead after an ill-timed
toilet stop, with some saying that the other main contenders
should have waited for the pink jersey.
Clamor on social media called for the other race contenders to slow and wait for Dumoulin to catch up, but the sentiment among those on the race was different." (cyclingweekly.com) (Photo: Yuzuru Sunada) May 24, 2017

Scott cyclocross bike review: Addict CX 20
versus Speedster CX 10.
"The
history of Scott’s involvement in cyclocross can be traced
back to the early years of the new millennium.
That was when the company’s first cyclocross frameset, the Crossteam, appeared in the 2003 catalog. Featuring double-butted 7005 T6 alloy tubing, the materials and construction of the Crossteam mirrored many of Scott’s other alloy frames at the time." (cyclingtips.com) (Matt Wikstrom) May 24, 2017
Jungels inspired by Wiggins and Dumoulin.
"Bob
Jungels, 24, plans to develop into a grand tour contender
over the next few years in the style of Tom Dumoulin or
Bradley Wiggins.
The Luxemburger leads the young rider classification by 2:25 minutes over Adam Yates (Orica Scott) with five stages to race in the Giro. The white jersey and much more appears possible." (velonews.com) May 24, 2017

Controversy on Giro d’Italia queen stage renews
question of race etiquette: When should a rival wait for a GC
leader?
"Controversy
erupted at the Giro d’Italia Tuesday when one of
professional cycling’s unwritten rules returned to the
spotlight after it was disregarded in the heat of battle.
Maglia rosa Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) swung off the side of the road at the bottom of the day’s final climb. Ahead, a GC group containing Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida), and Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha Alpecin) continued on, with Zakarin attacking shortly thereafter." Nibali wins queen stage of Giro d'Italia.
"Vincenzo
Nibali (Bahrain Merida) won a dramatic queen stage of the
Giro d’Italia, beating Mikel Landa (Team Sky) in a two-up
sprint.
Nairo Quintana (Movistar) finished several seconds down in third place. Maglia rosa Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) had to battle hard to come back from stomach problems, finishing more than two minutes down and keeping his race lead by just a few seconds." Giro Roundtable: Dumoulin’s mess was Nibali’s
success in stage 16.
"After
waiting for 15 stages, the Italian faithful finally saw
their hero Vincenzo Nibali in full flight.
The Bahrain Merida rider climbed like an angel and descended like a demon to win stage 16 and take some valuable time. It’s probably premature to say Tom Dumoulin’s race has gone in the toilet, but his mid-race bathroom break was a major setback, costing him minutes in the overall." (velonews.com) May 23, 2017

Showdown on the Stelvio.
"The
strada statale 39 is known as the main access road to the
Italian Alps from Bergamo, the Lombardy plain and beyond.
It leads to Aprica, Tirano and Bormio, and then up, up, up to the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio. On Tuesday the SS39 will lead to the gates of hell for the 2017 Giro d'Italia and host the queen stage of the race." (cyclingnews.com) May 23, 2017
Giro d'Italia: Peloton honor Hayden, Viellehner
and Manchester bombing victims.
"Amid
the excitement and tension ahead of the biggest stage of
this year’s Giro d’Italia, there was time to pause and
reflect for the riders and attending fans.
Before the flag dropped at 10:25, the peloton took time for a minute’s silence in honor of those that had been killed in Monday night’s bombing in Manchester, former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden and triathlete Julia Viellehner, who both died on Monday." (cyclingnews.com) May 23, 2017
Giro Stage 17: Tonally Strange.
"Wow,
that’s another long stage.
What this race lacks in amazing vertical, it makes up for it in horizontal I guess. There are actually three rated climbs, the first one the Aprica ascent, and the second, the Tonale... both of which remind you that you’re in Gavia Mortirolo territory, except neither of them is on the menu today. Oh well." (podiumcafe.com) May 23, 2017
Sagan and Kittel train at altitude in USA ahead

"Following

According to Belgian newspapers Het Laatste Nieuws and Het Nieuwsblad, Sagan will train in Utah while Kittel has headed to Colorado." (cyclingnews.com) May 23, 2017
Commentary: Five Tour of California takeaways.
"What
will be the lasting storyline from the 2017 Amgen Tour of
California? It’s still tough to say.
The seven-day race from Sacramento to Pasadena delivered a plethora of compelling tales. Overall winner George Bennett taught us the vague definition for the term “twisting a nut” after his impressive time trial. Andrew Talansky finally ended Cannondale Drapac’s two-year winless streak on the WorldTour when he won stage 5 at Mt. Baldy." (velonews.com) (Photo: Tim De Waele) May 23, 2017

How to train with a power meter.
"Power
meters are getting more affordable, but knowing what to do
with one is a different matter.
Jon Sharples of Train Sharp Cycle Coaching explains: “The main benefit is to give you real time information so that you can gauge your effort.” It’s not just about looking at your numbers after a ride, though: “Simply looking at the data afterwards will not let you make the most of your training ride or pace your race effectively,” says Sharples." Carbon Bike Repair Is Not A Myth.
"I
learned about the seemingly sketchy world of repairing a
carbon fiber mountain bike.
Universally, every single bike brand I talked to told me this was NOT A GOOD IDEA. They spouted all sorts of reasons from liability concerns, to the difficulty of the procedure, to the danger of a repair failing during extreme riding." (gearjunkie.com) May 23, 2017

George Bennett’s California surprise.
"Reporters
didn’t want to talk to George Bennett in Sacramento.
He was just another outside contender, sitting on the periphery of prognostication. Before stage 1, he sat in front of his team’s rented RV in a folding chair, chatting with his young teammates, checking the pins on his number, left alone." (velonews.com) May 22, 2017
Giro Stage 16: Rosa Mountain Majesties.
"We may
not know where this Giro d’Italia will ultimately be won.
We may not even be able to say where the peloton will suffer the most (Stage 18 says hello too). But we know one thing for sure, this day will be the highest point in the race, the longest day in the saddle, and a hard, memorable, classic Giro stage. Also I love the name “Giogo di Santa Maria,” on the assumption that it means “St. Mary’s Jog." (podiumcafe.com) May 22, 2017
Giro Rest Day Review.
"The
weather looks set fair for the Alps with cool but sunny
conditions expected for tomorrow’s siege of the Stelvio and
for the rest of the week too.
Tom Dumoulin looks in command and even signaled he was the Giro’s padrone at one point during yesterday’s stage when Nairo Quintana had crashed by telling the main group to slow. As the Giro enjoys its third rest day there’s the sense that everything so far been antipasti to the dishes about to be served up in the Alps." (inrng.com) May 22, 2017
Five ways it can all unravel for Dumoulin.
"Tom
Dumoulin is sitting in an enviable position on the third
rest day of the Giro d’Italia.
The Sunweb rider boasts an impressive leading gap to his nearest rival - 2:41 to Nairo Quintana - and with a final-day time trial in Milan, you can add at least an additional virtual minute to that lead, if not more. Giro Week Three: What Script Will It Follow?
"The
way to frame the question on everyone’s mind as regards the
battle for Giro supremacy is either as the Time Trial Guy
vs. the Climber, or the Guy In Front vs. the Comebacker.
The latter is of course a mere restatement of the facts, while the former is something more subjective, and might not even be fair by the time it’s all said and done." (podiumcafe.com) May 22, 2017
10 best rest day tweets from the Giro d’Italia.

two weeks of hard racing it’s time for a rest day at the

Electronic shifting and Battery Life: An
Overview.
"Readily
available since 2009, electronic shifting is becoming
increasingly more common as all the big drivetrain
manufacturers - Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo and FSA - all
offer electronic groupsets at various price points.
Here at CyclingTips we’re fans of the smooth and precise shifting that robotics offers, however, there is one big downside to anything electronic: batteries. There is a reason we aren’t seeing electronic and/or wireless braking (yet) - no matter how good the robotics are, humans cannot be trusted to keep their batteries charged." Merida’s new Reacto and much more.
"All the
best tech from last week, including big news from Merida and

We’re well and truly into the thick of the Giro d’Italia now, and that means some great opportunities to witness brand new bikes and all sorts of snazzy tech - and last week really delivered." (cyclingweekly.com) May 22, 2017
What can cyclists learn from other sports?
"Cycling
has become the envy of most other sports in Britain, there’s
no denying it.
One of our own has won the biggest race, the Tour de France, four times in the last five years; every member of our track team in Rio won a medal; our big sportives are so popular they warrant ballot entry; and we buy more bikes than cars. But let’s not get arrogant - there is still much we can learn from other sports, and in doing so, we might just get even better." (cyclingweekly.com) May 22, 2017
Zipp's new 302 Carbon Clincher loses dimples,

If so, Zipp's new 302 Carbon Clincher might be for you. This 45mm-deep, £1,299 / $1,500, wheelset offers the cheapest ticket yet to Zipp's full-carbon prom, and it's launching in both rim brake and disc brake variants." (cyclingnews.com) May 22, 2017
Giro d'Italia: Yates sprints to best Grand Tour
result yet in Bergamo.
"While
Yates recorded his best result yet in four Grand Tours, the

decisive third and final week of the 100th Giro.

Selle Royal Lookin 3D Athletic saddle.
"The
Selle Royal Lookin 3D Athletic is a very comfortable but
somewhat heavy saddle, good for a range of positions on the
bike and optimized for a 45-degree forward lean that should
suit most athletic cyclists.
It's not one for weight-watchers though. Weighing in at 359g vs the venerable Charge Spoon at 220g for half the price, the Lookin 3D is a portly perch." (road.cc) May 22, 2017
Giant Defy 2017: Are the Advanced Pro and SL

"The
Giant Defy line-up has always been created with endurance

Cyclists in Boston Use Life-Size Cut-Outs to
Send a Message to City Officials.
"Cycling
advocates in Boston have resorted to using life-size
cut-outs as a means of persuading city officials to make
bicycle safety more of a priority.
Indeed, over the weekend life-size cut-outs began appearing along Boston’s Massachusetts Avenue, serving as both a message to Mayor Martin J. Walsh, pointing out the need for the city to improve its cycling infrastructure, as well as urging motorists to more scrupulously honor the rights of cyclists. For example, one cut-out depicts a female cyclist with a bubble-caption asking motorists to “Look for bikes before opening your door. (That’s what this buffer is for.)" (capovelo.com) May 22, 2017
Mavic Rolls Out New Cyclocross and Gravel Hoops
with XA Elite Wheels, Redesigned Open Pro Rim.
"At Sea
Otter this year, Mavic had a unique presence, drawing
journalists out to the campground in the Laguna Seca
racetrack paddocks with the lure of evening barbecue and
morning pastries, instead of a booth in the public expo.
Without a formal presentation or display of the entire product line, the casual format and setting let you poke around the tent to see what might be interesting, not all that different from hunting for bargains at a swap meet." (cxmagazine.com) May 22, 2017

Nibali ‘good, if not better than previous
years’.
"Vincenzo
Nibali‘s star may not burn as bright as past years, but
those close to him say that he is good, if not better than
last year when he won his second Giro d’Italia title.
Nibali leads new team Bahrain Merida, the team that he helped start over the winter. So far, he has failed to give the team much to celebrate, losing time in the two summit finishes and time trial." (velonews.com) May 21, 2017

Cipollini NK1K review.
"We've
tested a few Cipollini bikes (RB800, RB1000) and found them
aggressive, rock solid and fast.
The uncompromising geometry of short wheelbase, low front end and long ride position suits those who like fast blasts rather than long days out. While the NK1K keeps to that ethos, it has a few more tricks." (cyclingnews.com) May 21, 2017
