Phinney to make Tour de France debut.
"After
eight seasons in the WorldTour, interrupted by a
nearly career ending leg injury, Taylor Phinney
will finally make his Tour de France debut when he
lines up with Cannondale Drapac in Düsseldorf next
Saturday.
Phinney made the move to Cannondale Drapac from BMC this year, and made returning to the Grand Tours a main goal for this season. He decided to stay in Europe, skipping the defense of his national time trial title, in the hope of being selected for the Tour de France." (cyclingnews.com) (Bettini Photo) June 23,

‘Grand Tour riders will become more
valuable with eight rider teams’.
"The
decision to reduce the number of riders per team
in Grand Tours from nine to eight from the 2018
season will make riders more valuable as there
will be less opportunities for many to race
three-week stage races.
That is the view of Dimension Data sports director Roger Hammond, who dismissed suggestions that the ruling – announced on Thursday as part of increased safety measures – would dramatically alter the dynamics of racing tactics." (cyclingweekly.com) (Photo: Yuzuru Sunada) June 23,

How the Tour de France reluctantly
embraced derailleurs.
"Henri
Desgrange had a reputation for pushing racers to
their limits.
The boss at L'Auto and original organizer of the Tour de France regularly barred riders from using new bicycle technology, fearing the gear would make the race too easy. In fact, Desgrange didn’t allow riders to use derailleurs until 1937, nearly 34 years after the invention of the gear-changing mechanism. Why did he so adamantly refuse a technological advance that had been around for decades?" (velonews.com) Photo: Brad Kaminski June 23,

"Nairo
Quintana (Movistar) turns his attention to the

glory.
The Colombian superstar spent the past several weeks recovering from the hard effort at the Giro d’Italia in his European base in Monaco. UCI announces 2018 rule changes
including eight-man teams for Grand Tours, 176 rider
peloton limit for all races.
"The
UCI’s Professional Cycling Council (PCC) announced
a number of rule changes.
The move comes as a bit of a reversal for the UCI. Last fall, race organizers ASO, RCS Sport, and Flanders Classics – who, between them, run 28 of the sport’s biggest races – agreed to cut current rider numbers by one, bringing Grand Tour squads to eight competitors each, and those riding the other events to line out with seven.
