The Safety Question. "Steven
Kruijswijk is out of the Vuelta after crashing into an unmarked bollard
during the finish of yesterday’s stage. It’s the latest safety concern.
Each time there are calls for something to be done but what could be
done and who could do it? Predictably there are lots of calls for the UCI to “do something” but in the immediate moment the rules firmly say it’s not a UCI matter and in the longer term the governing body is a weak institution so if it tried to take charge this might not work out well." Rio de Janeiro, where I am in good hands. A message with very mixed
feelings. Normally I am able to look forward after a disappointment,
but now I know there probably won’t be a chance like this anymore. When
you are in such good shape and can excel like this, it is very
difficult to accept this. I was so close, but gave it away and it was
my fault."

Phinney laser focused on Olympic medal in the
time trial.
"In the 2008 Olympic Games,
Taylor Phinney placed seventh in the individual pursuit in Beijing as a
precocious 18-year-old son of two Olympic medallists, barely eligible
to compete because of his age. In 2012, Taylor Phinney was a
heartbroken fourth place in the road race and the time trial, but still
with ample promise at age 22. Draw a straight line in between the two
points on a graph, and by this measure he should be on the podium in
Rio tomorrow after the individual time trial, but his last four years
have been anything but straightforward." (cyclingnews.com) (Bettini

Top five talking points from the women’s
Olympic road race.
"With two Dutchies on staff,
the women’s Olympic road race was an emotional rollercoaster for the
Ella team as we watched Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-AIS, the
Netherlands) having the ride of her career before crashing
horrifically, giving the race lead back to American Mara Abbott
(Wiggle-High5) who then heartbreakingly got caught with just 200 meters
to go as Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv, the Netherlands) launched an
early sprint to drop her two chase companions to the line." (cyclingtips.com.au)

The Moment The Olympics Were Won.
"Anna
van der Breggen wins the sprint by the Copacabana beach. A top pick for
the race the manner of her win was unexpected as she and the other
medal contenders had been dropped on the final climb to the Vista
Chinesa only everything changed when her team mate Annamiek van Vleuten
had a horror crash on the final descent, going from the race-winning
move to an ambulance. This crash was the decisive moment of the race as
van Vleuten was well ahead and could count on her time trialling
abilities to take her to the line." (inrng.com)

FSA readies WE electronic groupset for 2017.
"After
prototypes of the FSA electronic road group surfaced at the Tour de

will be launching at the Eurobike tradeshow at the end of August. FSA
has been working on a road groupset for years - announcing back in 2008
its intention for an 11-speed group by 2010. While FSA is staying mum
beyond the "WE is ready" teaser, it appears as if 2017 could be the
year FSA's road drivetrain group finally sees production." (cyclingnews.com)

Floyd Landis – Now There’s A Story!
"Interview:
Mennonite kid, discovers the bike, trains in secret, rises to the very
top, rides with Postal, goes it alone, wins the 2006 Tour de France but

Why Lizzie Armitstead should not be at the
Olympics .
"Lizzie
Armitstead said yesterday that people will think "I'm a cheat for the
rest of my life." I do not know whether she doped or not, but I do know
that, even if the CAS decision was correct in squashing one of her
missed tests due to the imcompetence of the testers, she should
withdraw herself from the Olympics. Athletes, especially the clean
ones, have a responsibility not only to their teams and their managers
and their palmares, but also to the fans and to the sport itself. " (crankpunk.com)

numbers of road bikes have wheels with bolt-through axles. The
