Chaos, crashes and flat tires: Tom Boonen
recaps a ‘standard’ Paris Roubaix.
"Life goes on for Tom Boonen after he
was denied a record breaking fifth Paris Roubaix title on Sunday, with
the Belgian posting a picture on social media of him feeding his young
daughter after the race.
The Etixx Quick Step veteran was beaten by one of the few people in the race older than him – Orica GreenEdge’s Mathew Hayman, who won at the 16th attempt." (cyclingweekly.co.uk) April

Hinault, Moser and Duclos-Lassalle praise
'magnificent' Paris Roubaix.
"Mat Hayman may have
been a most unexpected winner of Paris Roubaix but both his victory and
the race as a whole have been acclaimed by past winners Bernard Hinault, Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle,
Marc Madiot
and Francesco Moser
in the pages of L’Équipe." (cyclingnews.com)

Lefevere: "Our team was too good.
"During the final minutes of
Paris Roubaix the atmosphere in the vélodrome was ready to reach its
climax when five riders entered the track.
Among them was quadruple winner Tom Boonen, ready to get a record-breaking fifth win. Seeing Mathew Hayman take the win in the sprint, beating Boonen on the line was quite the anti-climax. In the Etixx camp obviously there were only disappointed faces. Team manager Patrick Lefevere was there inside the track to await his rider together with personal assistant Stephanie Clerckx. For once, Lefevere was speechless, briefly." (cyclingnews.com) April

Five things to do now the cobbled Classics are
over.
"The best time of the racing
year ended in spectacular fashion on Sunday with one of the best
editions of Paris Roubaix in years. Mathew
Hayman – who started the day as an 800-1 extreme
outsider – came in first to win on the 15th time he’s crossed the Paris
Roubaix finish line.
This came a week after Peter Sagan showed his stength and racing brain by riding away from his rivals and staying away to win the Tour of Flanders solo." (cyclingweekly.co.uk) April

Meet Sepp Kuss, revelation of the 2016
Redlands Classic.
"One look at Strava
leaderboards on some of the toughest climbs in the U.S. cycling hub of
Boulder, Colorado, reveals a relatively unknown name.
On several significant climbs, the first name to follow Tom Danielson’s is that of Sepp Kuss, a 22-year-old from Durango." (cyclingtips.com.au) April

Surprise Paris Roubaix debut for Phil Gaimon.
"Phil Gaimon is a
long and lanky racer, well suited for long climbs and fond of smooth
pavement.
On Sunday he found himself at the starting line of Paris Roubaix staring down a list of firsts: first time racing on cobbles, first time racing a Cannondale Synapse endurance bike, first time racing on low-psi tubulars. Gaimon did his job, though, getting in the early break before crashing out." (cyclingnews.com) April

Davis Phinney's cycling dream team.
"I was fortunate to ride
professionally on two groundbreaking teams - 7-Eleven and Coors Light -
alongside many, many great riders.
Coors Light was the dominant US based team of its era and superbly directed by Len Pettyjohn. But while stacked with talent, it’s difficult to quantify how successful we might’ve been in the big European races - only a few of the Coors guys were afforded the opportunity to race regularly in Europe. For that reason, I’ve built a dream team primarily from those riders of the 7-Eleven era (from when the team went professional in ’85 to ’90). " (cyclingnews.com) April

Tour de France: Ranking the contenders from
Contador to Quintana.
"The
Classics may be dominating the headlines at present, but away from the
spotlight, the contenders for the Tour de France have been continuing
their preparation for July.
A little under three months from the Grand Départ at Mont-Saint-Michel, Cyclingnews takes a look at how some of the favourites for yellow have fared thus far." (cyclingnews.com) April

Gravel Racing on Compass Tires.
"There is little mystery in the
tires that Matt
Surch used to win Ontario’s season-opening gravel race,
the Steaming Nostril.
He isn’t sponsored by anybody, and we were excited to learn that he chose Compass Bon Jon Pass tires for his winning ride. I used the opportunity to catch up with Matt and ask him about gravel riding, bike and tire choices, and his training." (janheine.wordpress.com) April

The Moment The Race Was Won: Paris Roubaix.
"Matthew Heyman wins
the sprint in the Roubaix velodrome, relegating Tom Boonen and Ian Stannard to the
lower steps of the podium and Sep
Vanmarcke and Edvald
Boasson Hagen trailing further behind.
In a wild race, shown on TV from start to finish, this was the greatest surprise of the day, to imagine any scenario in which Hayman beat all of these riders in sprint would sound fanciful but this was the moment the race was won." (inrng.com) April

| De Crescenzo slowly recovering from traumatic crash. "Lauren De Crescenzo’s
friends and family hope to raise $75,000 to defray medical expenses,
after the 25-year-old Coloradan suffered serious injuries in a crash at
a California race on April 2. In the closing meters of stage 2 of the San Dimas Stage Race, the Visit Dallas – DNA rider caught her handlebar in the metal fencing lining the course and crashed. De Crescenzo was airlifted to the University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she was placed in a medically induced coma for evaluation." (velonews.com) April 11, 2016 Hopeful Phinney still dreams of Roubaix win.
"Relief may be the most apt
descriptor following Taylor
Phinney’s successful return to Paris Roubaix. Relief that
the leg held up; relief that he still has the fight in him; relief that
yet another hurdle, perhaps the biggest yet, has been cleared on his
path back to the top.
But for a rider once touted as a future Roubaix champion, the most important question remains unanswered. Can he win the Hell of the North? “I don’t know,” he told reporters from inside the Roubaix velodrome, his face still crusted in sweat and dust. “I hope so. I think so. But it’s going to take a little longer." (velonews.com) April

Paris Roubaix 2016: A Day On The
Route.
"Yesterday I made the trek to
watch Paris Roubaix. While you might think that’d be as simple as a
walk across town, the reality is that Paris Roubaix hasn’t started in
Paris in many decades.
Instead, it starts in Compiègne, which is about an hour outside of Paris (by train or car). So I grabbed a Zipcar and loaded it up with all sorts of cycling/sport gear for a day of race watching, and then toying around in the countryside afterwards testing stuff. Might as well make use of my rental – right?" (dcrainmaker.com) April

Do riders need a special bike to win
Paris-Roubaix? Mathew Hayman didn’t.
"Tom Boonen rode his
trusted Specialized Roubaix, a bike named after this very race, with
special inserts designed to flex and absorb the hand numbing vibration
of riding on the cobbles.
Ian Stannard rode the Pinarello Dogma K8-S, a bike that is also designed specifically for the pavé, with built in rear suspension. Surprising then, that the winner, Mathew Hayman took to the cobbles aboard his favored Scott Foil aero bike." (cyclingweekly.co.uk) April

Emotion on the infield: Roubaix hides nothing,
reveals all.
"Paris Roubaix is cycling’s
most honest race. There’s no hiding. Apart from one rider each year,
the cobbles always win. Even the strongest of men can be reduced to
tears, sometimes of joy, but usually of anguish.
Sunday’s epic battle was one of the best in years, fueled by pure power and raw emotion. Team politics didn’t ruin the race. No one was sitting in. It was full-gas from the gun in Compiègne, rider against rider, and the suspense held until the five-up sprint on the velodrome at Roubaix. It was one-day racing at its absolute best." Popovych retires from racing, takes directeur
sportif role at Trek Segafredo.
"Trek Segafredo announced the
retirement of Yaroslav Popovych, whose final race for the team was
Sunday's Paris Roubaix.
The Ukrainian turned professional in 2002 with Landbouwkrediet Colnago after winning the U23 road race world title. He will move into a directeur sportif role with the team. "It will be quite the adaptation for me," Popovych said. "From the bike to the director's car. I love driving cars, but that's not the same as driving for 5 hours at 40kmh! It may be challenging to work with the athletes I rode with until yesterday, but I'm ready for it." (cyclingnews.com) April

Redlands Rider Diary Stage 5: Sunset Circuit
Apocalypse.
"Before I get into the most
intense day of Redlands yet, I want to thank all you readers for the
outpouring of support and encouragement I have received for these rider
diaries; from friends, strangers, and other riders in the peloton.
It feels really good to bring something to racing that we can all laugh about together, as we all know much too well how discouraging, challenging, and frankly how much of a bummer the sport can be at times." (cyclingtips.com.au) April

Dal-Cin unseats Acevedo to take overall win at
Redlands Bicycle Classic.
"The final stage at the
Redlands Bicycle Classic has a reputation for getting the last word in
the race's general classification, and it proved to be the case again
this year as Silber Pro Cycling's Matteo
Dal-Cin jumped into a breakaway that made it to the finish
line and launched him past Jamis rider Janier Acevedo for
the overall win.
"I'm over the moon," Dal-Cin said. "It's hard to believe that it panned out the way it did. It's just an amazing feeling, and it was exceptional after last night. It was definitely redemption for the team today." (cyclingnews.com) April

Post Apocalyptic Upcycled Bicycle Inner Tube
Bra.
"Call it a case of Mad Max meets Russ Meyer, along
with a whole lot of political incorrectness on our part, but we
couldn’t resist posting an article about this recent discovery – the
Post Apocalyptic Upcycled Bicycle Inner Tube Bra.
While, we’re not sure if it’s UCI approved, or if it’s guaranteed to increase watts for female riders and/or cross-dressers, but suffice to say, it’s likely to distract the competition." (capovelo.com) April

Phinney: I definitely have an appreciation for
how hard it is just to finish Paris Roubaix.
"Upon finishing Paris Roubaix
on Sunday, BMC’s Taylor
Phinney said that he has a new appreciation for how
difficult it is just to finish such a tough event.
The American finished 49th, just over 14 minutes behind the day’s winner, Mathew Hayman, but he said finishing the race was one more building block in his road to recovery." (cyclingnews.com) April

Kristin Armstrong wins overall at Redlands
Bicycle Classic.
"Twenty16 RideBiker put a

Sunday, delivering Leah
Thomas to the Sunset Road Race win and securing the
overall victory for Kristin
Armstrong.
“It was amazing,” Armstrong said of her team’s effort throughout the day. “I think that our tactics played out. My team kept me really patient, and Leah is an awesome climber." (cyclingnews.com) April

The curious case of Oscar74: How USADA nabbed a masters doper. "It
is a Monday in November when the first of several amateur athletes
contact the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s Play Clean Tip Center. The agency
welcomes anonymous tips via a toll-free number, email, or the U.S.
Postal Service. The complaints outline the same story about the same cyclist breaking the same rules. These tips set in motion a USADA investigation that is quickly determined to be credible. This is what leads to the doorbell and out-of-competition test on December 5. So that’s when it begins." (cyclingtips.com.au) April 11, 2016 Study finds oxilofrine in US supplements.
"A study published in the ‘Drug
Testing and Analysis’ journal has found that over 50% of supplements
sold in the US that claim to contain oxilofrine do contain oxilofrine,
despite the drug never having been approved for use in the US.
US law doesn’t permit dietary supplements to contain unapproved pharmaceutical drugs such as oxilofrine, which features on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List as a specified stimulant." (sportsintegrityinitiative.com) April

Tech of the Week: adjustable new Trek Domane
SLR, Garmin price cuts, and more.
"There were a couple of big
bike launches last week, the most noteworthy of which was the release

Reviewed: Trek Emonda SLR6 .
"We named the Emonda “bike of
the year” in 2015. One year later, we stand by that decision. This is a
purebred race bike that is as stiff and responsive as the competition,
is more comfortable than a lot of them, and can easily be built up in
the 12-pound range.
Yet it can take 28-millimeter tires (bigger if you want to push things). Even within the all-around category, the Emonda stands out for its versatility. As expected, when you combine super-light weight with outstanding lateral stiffness, you get a bike that wants to climb." (velonews.com) April

Shimano RP9 road shoes.
"The concept of a premium shoe
aimed at the endurance and sportive rider rather than a racer makes
sense, yet so few do it. The RP9’s offer respectable efficiency and
immense comfort.
Highs: Comfort, fatigue-reducing endurance focus, still a shoe built for performance in most situations. Lows: Racers may miss the locked-in feel of other high-end shoes, ventilation could be a little better. Built for general road riding and endurance events, the new Shimano RP range is a little different from Shimano's other road shoes – or most road shoes in general." (bikeradar.com) April
