Boulevard Road Race in San Diego County is as close as you can get to
an
official kick-off to the Southern California race season. The UCSD Cycling Team
is one of twenty-four
schools that compete in the Western
Collegiate
Cycling Conference (WCCC). Going on its 12th edition,
Boulevard has come to
be known as a “hard man’s race” as each lap is packed with 22.4 miles
of riding
and 3,100 feet of exhilarating descents and climbing, making it a
welcomed
change of scenery from the typical business park merry-go-round scene
that
dominates the SoCal racing calendar The race is a fantastic event as a
racer
and spectator, attracting upwards of seven hundred individuals each
year, many
of whom can be found crowding around the uphill finish. Many domestic
professional teams have used Boulevard as a test in preparation for the
Amgen
Tour of California, and racers have included Floyd Landis and neo-pro
Caleb
Fairly, who subsequently went on to for Team HTC-Columbia in the 2011
season. Historically
weather conditions on the course have ranged from perfectly sunny to
snow, and everything
in between, making Boulevard the perfect venue for all categories and
ages to
challenge their fitness.
Revenue
from the
race helps the UC San Diego Cycling Team to travel and compete across
California and Nevada in the WCCC. Additionally, Boulevard could not
happen
without the generous support of UCSD alum Michael
Robertson
(Dar.fm), Swami’s of Encinitas, and the entire racing community.>
The
12th
Annual Boulevard Road Race presented by Dar.fm will be held on
Saturday,
February 4th, 2012. To register, please use SoCalReg.
