Lance Armstrong: The History Man – part twelve.
"We’ll always need a Lance
Armstrong. Because he plays out as the original version of the Modern.
Yet.
Somehow I don’t necessarily like my own voice of reason. Because I like Lance Armstrong. And I loathe him. It’s the whole package. He is the only athlete since Muhammad Ali who sat down with Presidents wherever he went." (rouleur.cc) Photographs: Jakob Kristian Sørensen January

ASO doubles down on German bet, takes over
Eschborn Frankfurt.
"ASO is reshuffling its deck
and is doubling down on its German bet.
Just weeks after dropping Critérium International and the Tour of Qatar (a race it managed but did not own), the powerful race organizer is extending its reach into Germany, striking a deal to take over the company that runs the one-day semi-classic Eschborn Frankfurt (formerly the Henninger Turm) held each May." Frank Schleck Retires.
"With his retirement from
racing at age 36, Luxembourg racer Fränk Schleck has brought to a close
a nine decade long family history in cycling.

The C59 is Selle Italia’s ludicrously
lightweight road saddle.
"Right now we are hands on with
the C59, Selle Italia’s lightest ever saddle.
In creating the C59, Selle Italia took the basic shape of its SLR Tekno Flow road saddle - complete with its dramatic centre cutout - and reworked it in the form of a one-piece, 100 percent carbon fiber construction." (cyclingnews.com) (Oliver Woodman/Immediate Media) January

Lance
Armstrong: The History Man – part eleven.
"At
the height of his career, Lance Armstrong was the most famos athelete
on the planet. The Lance Armstrong Foundation was a succesfull
enterprise worldwide, and the accidential spin-off was that the entire
world of cycling had to, they just had to, wear his manufactured yellow
wristbands. Because why wouldn’t you?
Are you against cancer, are you against me and every human being in the world that this disease touches, so what kind of a person are you, you against the entire world, what is wrong with you, you see what I’m getting at?" (rouleur.cc) Photographs: Jakob Kristian Sørensen January

105-year-old Frenchman sets new hour record.
"Professional
riders in recent years have been stretching their careers into their
40s. Jens Voigt, who recently rode 27 hours for charity, retired before
his 43rd birthday. Chris Horner was still racing last year at 44,
Davide Rebellin is still racing at 45 and British rider Malcom Elliott
raced through age 50.
But none of those pros has anything on Robert Marchand when it comes to longevity." (cyclingnews.com) (Getty Images Sport) January

Bike Production Shifts Gears and Rolls Back to
the US.
"After
decades of offshoring, established bicycle brands and entrepreneurs are
bringing bicycle manufacturing back to the United States as overseas
costs rise and companies realize the value of "local for local"
production.
Kent International will roll out approximately 350,000 bikes at its Manning, S.C. factory, but expects to produce about 500,000 bikes in the U.S. in 2017, and has set a target to ramp up to more than 1 million bicycles by 2020." (industryweek.com) January

What losing the Ladies Tour of Qatar really
means for women's cycling.
"Last
week the UCI announced the cancellation of the Tours of Qatar due to
lack of sponsorship. Many within the cycling industry - fans and media
alike - made it known it was no great loss.
But what is the real impact on women's cycling? Cycling Central spoke to Anthony McCrossan, commentator and founder of Voxwomen to gain a different perspective." (sbs.com.au) January

Nice will celebrate its 75th edition by heading higher than it ever has
before, with a summit finish on the Col de la Couillole, at 1,678m,

2017 team analysis: Team Sky.
"During
the last few years, Sky have built a reputation of buying several
established stars with the purpose of turning them into luxury
domestiques.
That was last the case ahead of the 2016 season when the team picked up the likes of Mikel Landa and Michal Kwiatkowski. However, the team have been much less active on the transfer market ahead of 2017 and they haven’t signed any prolific winners or grand tour stars." (cyclingquotes.com) (Photo: Graham Watson) January
