Can Dumoulin hold his nerve and win the Giro d’Italia?

"‘Fino alla fine’ – Right to the very end.

When race director Mauro Vegni designed the route of the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia, he perhaps hoped for a close race and thrilling finale in Milan.

But there has never been a similar finish to the corsa rosa, with five riders fighting for the final three podium places and all of them with a realistic chance of winning the maglia rosa if their rivals suffer a bad day, mess up a corner or even crash."

Giro Stage 21: Maglia Rosa Showdown In Milan.

Thumbnail Credit (podiumcafe.com): A pink parade to Milan? Nope. Cute little sidebars about auto racing? Hell no. Austrian imperial designs? Shut yo mouf.Thumb Overlay."Obviously the real story is the combination of tricky turns at the start and finish, and the flat-to-slightly-downhill nature of the course, including long straight sections.

The race doesn’t favor the pure power guys as much as the demanding stage 10 did, insofar as everyone will benefit from the easy profile, but the handling skills required to maximize the effort in the many turns will matter a lot too.

I don’t know that this course is hard enough for Dumoulin to have it all to himself."

Five talking points from stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia.

"One of the reasons for the four riders at the top of the general classification being separated by less than one minute and the top six by 1-30 (historically low time gaps for this late stage of the race) is that they have all been very evenly matched in the race.

That was clear today, when, despite several desperate attacks on the final climbs, no substantial distances were opened between any of them."
