The
official "end" to the California mountain bike season takes place this
weekend, and offers racers two days of solid racing, a 50-mile West
Coast marathon championship and a California state cross country
championship.
The
cross collective will focus all of their attention towards Gloucester,
MA for two days of UCI racing in the heart of New England and
Kalmthout, Belgium will host the last tune up race before the European
season begins in earnest next weekend.
Cyclocross
season is in full swing in the U.S., but one man from Massachusetts is
easing into fall. Local boy Tim Johnson
(Cannondale Cyclocrossworld.com) is among the main players at the Gran
Prix of Gloucester this weekend, but is looking past October toward a
rematch with the Koksijde, Belgium, course that beat him down in 2010.
"Because
of how awesome you are – you’re clearly the most dominant CX rider in
North America, and the only thing faster than you in the holeshot is
Adam Myerson’s Twitter account - we expected you to start the
season off with a raft of victories, but it seems you’ve had a rough go
of it over the past few weeks. So, how did we get to this point?"
Compared
to a country where the top cyclocrossers can earn close to seven
figures, it wasn’t the total prize purse of American races that caught
the paper’s attention, but rather all the American fans handing out
dollar bills.
Cross
is a typical event in that it was invented (supposedly) by French and
completely co-opted by Belgians. We do know that the French hosted a
national CX championships in 1902, and Belgium was next in 1910. We
also know that the sport's hallmarks are shitty conditions, wide tires,
and beer.
Unlike
FSA’s top line chainsets, the Team Issue has an alloy skeleton to which
the carbon composite arms and spider are bonded. The axle is oversized
to 24mm diameter and made of super tough and stiff chromoly. The outer
finish is a unidirectional carbon with classy graphics that have proved
hardwearing, as they’re applied underneath the final lacquer.

Change
is in the air. The UCI has been shifting its support among existing and
emerging mountain bike racing disciplines. For 2012, four cross is out
of the World Cup while cross country eliminators are in - at least for
some rounds, and the UCI has established a "world series" of marathon
races. The organization is also looking at building a gravity endurance
series for 2013.

The
UCI might declare the sport to be in a “golden age” but I see
otherwise. Sponsors are staying away from the sport and teams are
increasingly reliant on wealthy benefactors for funding. There’s
nothing wrong with the sugar-daddy approach but it substitutes
corporate sponsorship; many companies might find their audience
demographic of cycling is ideal for them but right now they are

So,

Two
gold, two silver and two bronze medals for Britons, ahead of Australia
and France.
Deja
vu all over again at the opener of the Exergy US Gran Prix of
Cyclocross when Katerina Nash (Luna) powered away from the field on the
second lap at day one of Planet Bike Cup. It wasn’t a concerted attack
by the rider, just engaging her engine as she rode smoothly even when
the rain opened for one lap.
Trebon
and Powers took turns at the front, trading blows while Wellens stayed
at the back, sometimes a few bike lengths off. Powers would use his
skills to bunny-hop the barriers and ride the runup, successfully four
out of six times while Trebon took over on the straights.

Giorgia
Bronzini (Italy) defended her rainbow jersey while Marianne Vos
(Holland) finished runner-up for the fifth time in a row Saturday in a
heated women’s race at the world road cycling championships.
Pierre-Henri
Lecuisinier gave France another gold medal and another rainbow jersey
in the junior men’s road race after sprinting away from the remnants of
a successful break to beat Belgium’s Martijn Degreve and the
Netherlands’s Steven Lammertink into second and third respectively.
Saturday's
Day 5 of the 2011 UCI Road World Championships at Copenhagen, Denmark
gets underway with the Junior Men Road Race (126km) at 9:00am CET
(3:00am U.S. Eastern). The Elite Women Road Race (140km) is scheduled
to begin at 1:30pm CET (7:30am U.S. Eastern). UCI Road World
Championships live video streaming should get underway at around 9:00am
CET (3:00am U.S. Eastern).
Famous
as the symbol of the world champion, cycling’s rainbow jersey was first
introduced in 1927 when the inaugural world championships were
organised in Germany. The winner was Italian Alfredo Binda.
This
year’s World Championship is expected to be one for the sprinters. A
flat course in Copenhagen practically guarantees it. But after many of
the sport’s top sprinters have suffered through injury-plagued seasons,
is anyone left standing to take advantage of the course? And given that
many of the more veteran sprinters seem to be performing below form,
could a youngster win outright?
World
number one out to exorcise the demon of four successive silver medals.

World
number one out to exorcise the demon of four successive silver medals.
The
World Championships for the Under 23 Men could not have been a more
open race with constant attacks all around the course. It was
impossible to guess who would win this one as no country could dominate
the action. Breaks would come and go and then in the end it all came to
a sprint. Will all the races finish this way? It’s looking probable!
Lucy
Garner of Great Britain sprinted away from the field to claim the
junior women’s road race title at the UCI World Championships. She beat
Jessy Druyts of Belgium and Christine Siggaard of Denmark.
Friday's
Day 4 of the 2011 UCI Road World Championships at Copenhagen, Denmark
gets underway with the Junior Women Road Race (70km) at 9:30am CET
(3:30am U.S. Eastern). The Under 23 Men Road Race (168km) is scheduled
to begin at 1:00pm CET (7:00am U.S. Eastern). UCI Road World
Championships live video streaming should get underway at around 9:30am

Current
World Champion Thor Hushovd (Garmin-Cervelo) has said that although the
course in Copenhagen may suit him, the field is among the most open he
can recall and that it will be very hard for his team to control the
race on Sunday.

"We
looked at past performances as an indication of what it takes to win
and came up with some criteria for winning the World Championships.
Last year, “The Numbers” (with a bit of massaging) predicted that Thor
Hushovd would win. This year is a little harder to predict, with the
Vuelta ending a little earlier, World’s being held over a week earlier,
and a number of the favorites thrown off due to injuries in the Vuelta.
With a course that everyone is saying favors the sprinters, it’s tough
to use basic statistics and expect them to mean anything – but we’ll
try nevertheless."

start with the pro racers that we love to read about. Every year, more
and more racers are starting in the Elite field, and we wanted to hear
what it feels like to go from winning in the lower categories to
starting in the back of the grid with racers like Jeremy Powers in the
front.
Going
to France was a treat. Not just because PBP is a wonderful adventure,
but because I love visiting France. In August, Paris loses some of its
urban edge, and people become more relaxed. The city organizes Paris
Plages (“Beach in Paris”): For a few weeks, sand is trucked in, and a
freeway along the Seine are transformed into a beach. The square in
front of the Hôtel de Ville (courthouse) becomes another beach with
volleyball nets. It’s a lovely way to celebrate summer!

The
American cyclocross circuit has always been second fiddle to the

It

Robert

Aside

Followers
of cycling will note that the finish of a race often sees many flags
and banners being waved. My favorite is the “Dirk Hoffman Motorhomes”
board, a common sight in Belgian classics. It’s inevitable, the finish
line is filmed in detail and the images are repeated on news
broadcasts. In other words, it’s valuable airtime.
Hope
Tech has been showing this integrated cassette/freehub body for a
little more than a year now, but word is it’s getting close to
production. Shown above in a 6-speed DH version, they also had a full
10-speed version hidden away, both with a minimum 9T cog. Hope says
that’s really the main draw for the system – being able to run a wider
range of gearing in the back thanks to a tiny 9T minimum with the usual
max limits determined by the rear derailleur. It could make 1×10
systems more practical.
With

This

Philadelphia airport wasn’t the best introduction to the country, I’ve
been trying to show her some of the nicer parts. Granted, it’s been
raining every day, which is going to mean a very muddy start to her US
cyclocross season, but she’s taking in stride.
Carbon
fiber road seatposts are increasingly
being built with an emphasis on comfort as well as light weight. The
best exponents of this technology so far are Storck, with their clever
Comfort and Ultra Comfort posts, which feature a carbon layup designed
to flex under load, and Canyon, with their VCLS post, which adds basalt
fibre but acts in much the same way, if anything offering even more
movement (depending on rider weight).

The

After
two weeks of rumors, the merger of Team Radio Shack and Leopard Trek
was confirmed yesterday evening. As a result, two World Tour squads
jammed with talent, egos, and (unfulfilled) expectations will now have
to find a way to co-exist as one.
Joost
Posthuma and Tom Stamsnijder are under contract for 2012 but have not
been mentioned in new team’s plans.
The
announcement of the new RadioShack-Nissan-Trek team for the coming
season came as a surprise to Leopard Trek sports director Kim Andersen,
who was informed of the deal only by a Danish television station after
the press release was issued.
Saxo
Bank/Sungard’s JJ Haedo read the directions correctly and won perhaps
the most bizarre sprint finish in the history of the sport.
Fabian
Cancellara had a shower on the Leopard Trek team bus and then headed to
Bilbao airport for a flight home to Switzerland after Tuesday's
sixteenth stage of the Vuelta, as his thoughts turned to his final
preparation or the world championships.

Juanjo
Cobo wasn’t on anyone favorite’s list to win the 2011 Vuelta a España,
not even on the power rankings at his Geox-TMC squad, which was betting
on Denis Menchov or Carlos Sastre to ride within range of the podium.
Bradley
Wiggins is not yet willing to admit defeat in the Vuelta despite losing
the lead, the Team Sky rider said on Monday.

Heading
into the last week of racing, Maxime Monfort has overtaken his team
leader Jakob Fuglsang at the Vuelta a España. The Belgian Leopard Trek
rider now sits in fifth overall place after he finished eighth on
Sunday's mythical stage to the summit of the Angliru - a dreadful climb
that held its promises.
Riders

With
just over two weeks until the World Championships, the women's peloton
hit a final block of hard racing. This week, there are two
stage races - l'Ardèche in the South of France, and starting tomorrow,
the Holland Ladies Tour.
Tejay
Van Garderen has stated his ambition of riding as Cadel Evans’ right
hand man in the mountains of the Tour de France in 2012. The American
climber signed a three-year deal with Evans’ BMC squad on August 1,
despite interest from a raft of teams including Garmin-Cervelo, Sky and
Rabobank.
Two-time
defending PCP2P champion Alex Grant of the Cannondale Factory Team made

count Tinker out, so I was wondering what he had left. I wore a

that was part of the difference.

Boonen has been struggling in the Vuelta a Espana, and has finally
disclosed the rather embarrassing physical problem which has been
hindering him. He has an open wound under a delicate area which is very
painful and makes it difficult for him to ride. "It does hurt quite a
lot," he told Het Nieuwsblad.
The
BMC Racing team won a hot competition for the contract of young
American Tejay Van Garderen last month. Van Garderen told VeloNews
Thursday that he looked forward to joining Cadel Evans and Taylor
Phinney in a long-term assignment with the team, but was sad to see his
HTC-Highroad team crumble.
"The
support is magnificent and something only the cycling community could
provide. The volunteers manning the controls were also a wonderful
source of encouragement. Yet to do something just because it’s there
isn’t reason enough for me to do it again. I’d recommend the journey to
anyone but perhaps the destination wasn’t for me."
One
of the best cyclists Japan has ever produced is Shinichi Fukushima.
Fukushima-san's palmares are enviable: Japanese National Champion 2003,
winner - Tour of Japan 2004, winner - Tour of Siam 2005, a stage win at
the 2007 Tour de Langkawi, and finally at the age of 38 Fukushima-san
won the Japanese Time Trial championship (course record). These are
just a few of his results in Asia, however he has also posted top
consistent results in Europe including podiums in France and Belgium.
Needing
no introduction, the famed Golden Gate Park will welcome racers as they
compete for the title of Singlespeed Cyclocross World Champion (SSCXWC)
during the weekend of November 18-20, 2011.
Lezyne's
ever-expanding accessories line now includes this combination pump
that’s excellent for training or racing use, as long as your fingers
don’t freeze.

While
Levi is coy on the subject, several news sources are already claiming
that the RadioShack rider will transfer to the Belgian squad Omega
Pharma-Quick Step in 2012.
Robbie
McEwen (RadioShack) and Fumiyuki Beppu (RadioShack) are the latest
additions to the GreenEdge cycling project, with a team spokesman
announcing the signings at the official launch for the upcoming
Goulburn-Sydney Cycle Classic.
Each
rider will have a unique and permanent race transponder attached to
their bike. The transponder is attached to the front fork and has an
internal battery which lasts up to 5 years. All your licence
information is encoded on the magnetic strip on your race licence. When
you register your card is swiped, information on you transponder is
taken from the database and you are automatically entered to the start
sheet and the computer which will record your transponder crossing the
line each lap.
Alberto
Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard) has said that the Tour de France will be
the centrepiece of his 2012 season, and also hinted at a return to the
Vuelta a España for the first time since 2008.

pounds, or 6,680 grams to be precise).
From
cross-country to downhill to four-cross, we preview the most exciting
races at this year’s mountain bike World Championships in Champery,
Switzerland, and pick the winners in every discipline.
The
year begins on 1 January for many but that’s not the case for plenty of
people around the world, including the cycle trade. For many in the
business of selling bikes, it’s 2012 already with the advent of new
products and the trade shows Eurobike and Interbike.
After
a busy couple of seasons in road bike development with their new Impec
and TimeMachine, Swiss company BMC are devoting a bit more attention to
the off-road side of their business with two new 29er models for 2012
to go along with the carbon fiber Trailfox launched earlier this year.
If
you spent your summer riding skinny tires, watching Tour de France
feeds, and all but forgot about the cyclocross bike hanging on your
wall, you’re not alone.
"We've
trawled the show looking at slippery bikes, here's what we found..."
There
are different philosophies on how to set prices. The traditional way is
to figure out how much something costs to make, add a little profit,
and determine the retail price. The more modern way is to keep your
prices low on “high-visibility” items for which people comparison-shop,
but inflate your margins on “add-on” products that people tend to buy
without comparing prices.

Earlier
today, the Giro d’Italia launched their ‘Tweet Your Maglia Rosa’
project along with a facebook vote to choose the 2012 design for the
leader’s jersey, the Maglia Rosa.
It’s
that time of year, the 2012 Cyclepassion calendar is about to be
unveiled at Eurobike. Whether you love it, or hate it, the 2012 edition
features even more beautifully shot photographs of the top women of the
sport.
Young
American rider Tejay Van Garderen, recently of HTC-Highroad, has signed

signed the veteran Italian cyclist Marco Pinotti.

"I
am glad that Quickstep will have Tony Martin into the team. Leipheimer
has had one of his best seasons with a second place finish in the Tour
of California , an overall victory in the Tour de Suisse and a fresh
first place in the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado. He seems
like a very likeable rider.” - Brian

When
it comes to riding a bicycle there are really no small repair problems,
because something minor can still mean walking a bike rather than
riding it. Minneapolis cyclists Chad DeBaker and Alex Anderson saw
these needs as an opportunity, rather than a problem, and created Bike
Fixtation, a self-serve bicycle repair station, the first of which is
located in the Uptown Transit Station near where they work in
Minneapolis, MN.
The
Wall Street Journal reported in a video titled (somewhat ridiculously),
“Athletes Swear by Sessions in a Pressurized Egg,” that a new altitude
simulator called the CVAC Pod, may boost athletic performance. The pod
works by suctioning out air from the pod to simulate being at a high
altitude, and that the effects will theoretically increase an athlete’s
VO2Max.
Now
let me tell you, even a robot gets choked up when his wife and kids
tell him they love him. I never wanted a RoadID, but you’ll never get
this thing off me now.
