The
elite men's sixth stop on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar
begins at 4pm Pacific Daylight Time on Sunday, May 1.
Australian
BMC Racing Team rider looking good.
U.S.
national time trial champion Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) didn’t get the
result he wanted on Saturday’s stage 4 TT at the Tour de Romandie. He
went into an early downhill corner too fast and crashed spectacularly,
smashing his bike, sustaining a bad bruise on his left buttock and
getting a chainwheel rash on his left leg. He continued on his spare TT
bike after losing at least a minute.
Saturday's
Tour de Romandie Stage 4 is a 20.1km Individual Time Trial from Aubonne
to Signal-de-Bougy. The first rider departs at 2:15pm CET
(8:15am U.S. Eastern). Tour de Romandie live video streaming
should begin at around 4:00pm CET (10:00am U.S. Eastern).
Saturday's
Tour of Turkey Stage 7 departs Tekirova at 12:50pm EEST (5:50am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Manavgat around 4:14pm EEST
(9:14am U.S. Eastern). Tour of Turkey live streaming video
should begin at around 2:30pm EEST (7:30am U.S. Eastern).
Saturday's
Vuelta a Asturias Stage 3 departs Luarca at 11:15am CET (5:15am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Santuario del Acebo (Cangas
del Narcea) at around 4:22pm CET (10:22am U.S. Eastern).
Vuelta a Asturias live streaming video should begin around 3:00pm CET
(9:00am U.S. Eastern).
Joaquim
Rodriguez finished 2010 as the number one rider in the UCI rankings. He
had a great year with several wins and many consistent finishes.
In
second place is Rhae Shaw (CycleU), the Canadian triathlete
who is now focusing solely on cycling. After dropping her chain on the
first climb, Janel Holcomb (Colavita Forno d’Asolo) caught her
two-minute women and finished third.
The
Trek-Livestrong U23 team did it again at the SRAM Tour of the Gila time
trial. Last year it was Jesse Sergent, and this time it was Dale
Parker, the 18-year old Australian with a time of 34:39 on the 16.15
miles (26km) out-and-back course with 1000 feet (305 m) of climbing.
With
one day to go in the 47th Presidential Tour of Turkey, Andrea Guardini
(Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli) has met the expectations of his directeur
sportif Luca Scinto, who promised him a start at the Giro d’Italia
should he win two stages this week. But the sprinter and his mentor
have since decided to forget their bet and Guardini will not be on the
start line in Turin on May 7.

Following
her coach’s advice, red jersey Clara Hughes (Pactimo) knew that she had
to be second wheel into the final corner before the 400-meter dash to
the finish line. And that’s exactly what she did. Hughes opened up her
sprint and held it to the finish line to win the Silver City Criterium,
stage 4 of the SRAM Tour of the Gila.
The
Trek-Livestrong kids did it again at stage 4 of the SRAM Tour of the

the line to take the bunch sprint, making two years in a row for
Trek-Livestrong following Taylor Phinney’s win last year.
Alejandro Borrajo (Jamis/Sutter Home) took second with Aaron Kemps (V
Australia) third.
The
stage will be viewable on the VeloNews live page,

at 4:15 p.m.).

You've
seen and read plenty about Zipp's 303 rim profile... A few major

than most realize...

The Belgian captured Gent-Wevelgem and finished fourth at the Tour of

A

understand how fitting this name is. Before coming here I knew very
little about this event, but I’ve heard little bits about it via others
emailing me saying “you gotta come and do this race!”

The
Trek-Livestrong development team once again surprised even itself with
a blistering time trial win at the Tour of the Gila, when 18-year-old
Dale Parker surprised the heavy hitters.
Team
Katusha’s Russian contender Pavel Brutt retained the race leader’s
yellow jersey.
Friday's
Tour de Romandie Stage 3 departs Thierrens at 11:15am CET (5:15am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Neuchatel around 3:13pm CET
(9:13am U.S. Eastern). Tour de Romandie live video streaming
should begin at around 2:00pm CET (8:00am U.S. Eastern).
Friday's
Tour of Turkey Stage 6 departs Fethiye at 11:10am EEST (4:10am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Finike around 4:16pm EEST
(9:16am U.S. Eastern). Tour of Turkey live streaming video
should begin at around 2:30pm EEST (7:30am U.S. Eastern).
Schumacher
retains lead on morning stage.
Friday
will see morning and afternoon stages at the Vuelta a
Asturias. There is a road stage in the morning which begins
at 10:00am CET (4:00am U.S. Eastern) and an individual time trial in
the afternoon which is scheduled to begin around 4:00pm CET (10am U.S.
Eastern). Only the TT is scheduled to be broadcast
live. Vuelta a Asturias live streaming video should begin
around 5:00pm CET (11:00am U.S. Eastern).
For
the first time since his comeback to cycling last September, Stefan
Schumacher has been victorious. Sprinting to the win in stage one of
the Vuelta Asturias in Spain, the Miche-Guerciotti rider is now leading
the general classification of the five-day event.
Without
a full team to support her efforts, Miller was tasked with “staying as

rested and recovered for tomorrow’s time trial.”
One
of the interesting situations about Geox-TMC’s sponsorship deal is

Free-to-air
digital TV channel ITV4, which earlier this year said that it planned
to increase the amount of cycling it covers, will be showing the Amgen
Tour of California live from 15 May. The news was confirmed on Twitter
by Ned Boulting, who will be presenting coverage from a studio in
London, together with a “mystery guest.”
Cyclists

The
Ardennes Classics are over. The weather is getting warm. Big road races
are moving away from one day 260-300 km epics to seven-plus-day stage
races. The skinny climbers are coming out to play. That must mean we
are getting closer and closer to ’cross season, only a four short
months away.

BikeRadar: 3 feet and 15mph law coming to California.
Every
road cyclist knows the feeling — the rush of air, the feeling of heat
rising, and a car suddenly passing dangerously close. It’s problem on
rural roads and urban streets, and when the motorist makes contact the
cyclist loses every time. In the US, California is close to passing a
law that offers, at least some, protection.
Garmin-Cervelo’s
head honcho Jonathan Vaughters has earned tremendous respect within the
world of pro cycling.

day in the Alps and it’s rare to go beyond 5,000m (16,500 ft).

Frank

the season at the stage two Inner Loop Road Race at the SRAM Tour of
the Gila. He won a bunch sprint ahead of Anibal Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter

(RealCyclist.com) in third.
After
a blank season in 2010, Italy’s Damiano Cunego (Lampre-ISD) is back to
his best. The 29 year old’s victory on Thursday at stage 2 of the 65th
Tour de Romandie came in a trademark uphill sprint, crossing the line
in medieval Romont two seconds ahead of an impressive Cadel Evans (BMC

Thursday's
Tour de Romandie Stage 2 departs Romont at 12:55pm CET (6:55am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Romont around 5:22pm CET

Stage
1 starts at 12:40pm CET (6:40am U.S. Eastern). Race finish around

It’s
the UCI’s points system that’s ruining everything. Teams think about

Francisco
Mancebo (Realcyclist.com) powered to a solo win in the first stage of
the SRAM Tour of the Gila Wednesday, taking an early overall lead in
the mountainous Southwestern stage race. Tyler Wren (Jamis-Sutterhome)
was second and young Joe Dombrowski (Trek-Livestrong) was third.
For
the second straight day at the Tour de Romandie an unlikely figure took
both the stage victory and top position on general classification.
While unheralded Jonathan Castroviejo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) was the
surprise prologue winner yesterday, today's honour went to Pavel Brutt
(Katusha).
Wednesday's
Tour de Romandie Stage 1 departs Martigny at 12:45pm CET (6:45am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Leysin around 5:22pm CET
(11:22am U.S. Eastern). Tour de Romandie live video streaming
should begin at around 4:00pm CET (10:00am U.S. Eastern).
Alessandro
Petacchi is back in business, winning the queen stage in the world
heritage site of Pamukkale at the end of a hilly and wet day at the
47th Presidential Tour of Turkey. After losing three bunch sprint
finishes to riders of a lesser fame than his, Andrea Guardini, Valentin
Iglinskiy and Manuel Belletti successively Petacchi has shown his form
is coming good leading up to the Giro d'Italia, which starts at the end
of next week in Turin.
Wednesday's
Tour of Turkey Stage 4 departs Marmaris at 10:35am EEST (3:35am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Pamukkale around 4:18pm EEST
(9:18am U.S. Eastern). Tour of Turkey live streaming video
should begin at around 2:30pm EEST (7:30am U.S. Eastern).
For
years, Romandie was the final piece of the pre-Giro puzzle for anyone
hoping to contend for the maglia rosa in the season’s first Grand Tour,
but lately—thanks largely to the Giro’s earlier start date—more of the
Italian race’s top favorites have chosen to pass on this 6 day event in
the French-speaking region of Switzerland in exchange for the shorter,
harder Giro del Trentino two weeks before the start of the Italian
Grand Tour.
At
the Redlands Bicycle Classic where the temperatures hovered in the high
90s under cloudless sunny days, staying hydrated became even more
important for the racers. For most, it was the first hot spell of the
year and the heat took a toll, some suffered from muscle cramps that
forced to stop and drink during the second stage.
Internal
gear hubs (or IGHs as they’re often referred to), contain all of the
shifting components within the hub. As such, they’re visually clean,
they require minimal maintenance, and all of their gears are usable and
controlled with only one shifter instead of the usual two found on most
modern derailleur drivetrains.

front wheel into the rear of your bike, catching your derailleur in his
spokes. The consequences are a buckled front wheel for him, and a
broken rear mech for you.
The
Flying Scotsman is a bleak book and you're never more than a few pages
from a new trough of despair in the life of a champion cyclist who was
suffering from bipolar disorder. It's a book that starts with a rough

aren't much of a barrel of fun either.

challenging on the calendar.

U.S. Eastern) with the departure of the first rider. Tour of
Romandy live streaming video should begin from around 5:55pm CET
(11:55am U.S. Eastern).
Prologue
start time: Tuesday 15:55 CET (6:55:00 AM PDT); Earliest live video:
17:55 CET (8:55:00 AM PDT); Approximate finish: 18:59 CET (9:59:00 AM

After
Philippe Gilbert’s impressive win in Liège-Bastogne-Liège the
atmosphere in the Omega Pharma-Lotto team was one of celebration but it
seems the long-term future of the Belgian team is in doubt, with the
sponsors reportedly on brink of splitting up at the end of the season.
Gilbert is also on the wish list of a number of rival managers.
The
Arenberg Forest is the most infamous road — if you can call it a road —
in professional cycling. Its storied stones offer venue to both
spectacular heroics and tragedy. Words cannot do service to the sheer
violence a rider faces when crossing these 2.4 kilometers of cobbles.
The reality is, a cyclist must experience it to truly know. Recently I
rode Arenberg and it made an everlasting impression.

Germany.
As
is the case for many cycling fans, it all started with Lance. The
locals remind you of it, the other pros living here remind you of it
and there’s an inescapable presence of the man, who for many, is the
greatest cyclist ever.
National
and International Professional Cycling return to Missouri with the Tour
de Grove. Featuring three days of racing in three historic
neighborhoods across the City of St. Louis, the Tour de Grove is
comprised of three events; Friday evening May 13th, the Midtown Rally
Grand Prix in the Locust Business District, Saturday May 14th, The Tour
de Grove in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood and the Dutchtown
Classic in South St. Louis on Sunday, May 15th.

Rise,

Striking

I’ve
trying not to be biased as I have some Italian relations but for me,

The
2011 Liège-Bastogne-Liège is Sunday April 24, 2011.
Sunday’s
Liège–Bastogne–Liège marks the end of the spring classics season and
the transition to stage racing and soon, the summer. We’ve had races
like Paris-Nice or the Tour of the Basque country and the scenic Giro
di Trentino is on right now. But eyes have been on the spring classics
in Belgium.
Roman
Kreuziger (Astana) outsprinted Emanuele Sella (Androni Giocattoli) to
win the final stage.
Friday's
Giro del Trentino Stage 4 departs Andalo at 11:15am CET (5:15am U.S.
Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Madonna di Campiglio around
3:30pm CET (9:30am U.S. Eastern).
This
is a shaky cam peek into the world of Mavic during the Queen of the
classics. A hors category stress day for everyone from the riders on
down to the guys handing out the best French fresh wheel on
cobblestones.
A
rite of spring for 20 years returns this weekend with the opening round
of the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.
‘La
Doyenne’, a French term of respect meaning, ‘oldest member’ – it’s how
we refer to Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the oldest of the five ‘monuments’ in
cycling. First run in 1894 the roll of honour reads like a ‘who’s who’
of cycling – Ferdi Kubler, Rik van Looy, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard
Hinault, Moreno Argentin, Michele Bartoli and of course Eddy Merckx.
There
may be a new champion in the making in French women's cycling, still
dominated by the 52-year-old Jeannie Longo. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot,
just 19 years of age, took an impressive seventh in the Flèche Wallonne
Féminine on Wednesday, with the victory going to Marianne Vos.
Belgian
is overwhelming favourite for la Doyenne but takes nothing for granted.

The
oldest of the monuments, La Doyenne is arguably the most tactical.
Team
Sky rider Morris Possoni is one of three Italian cyclists whose homes
have been searched by law enforcement officials reportedly
investigating links between professional cyclists and the controversial
sports doctor Michele Ferrari. The other two cyclists involved are
Italian champion Giovanni Visconti and his FarneseVini-Neri Sottoli
team mate, Diego Caccia.
If
it’s been hard to nail riders and their “doctors” for doping because
they’ve often been one step ahead of the testers, constantly refining
techniques to avoid detectikon, one area where people might slip up is
the money.
“It’s not a big surprise that

1984, 1st: 1985, 4th: 1986, 12th: 1987, 20th; 1988, 5th: 1989, 1st –
good enough to tell us a little about La Doyenne?

If
the Tour of Flanders is in your heart and Paris-Roubaix is in your
head, then Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a race that is clearly in your legs.
’crossers
are still alive during the off-season, and some are even mixing it up
at the front of their respective “other” projects. This week Katie
Compton survives a near-death experience only to hop on a plane and
head to South Africa; Marianne Vos just can’t stop winning bike racers;
arguably the two most dominant ’cross racers of both the 2009-2010 and

We've

Philippe
Gilbert will win Liege, and Belgium may form a government.
The
race that leaves from Liege, travels to Bastogne, snaking along the
Luxembourg border, and then back to Liege, is this Sunday. It’s the
oldest of the Classics, the doyenne, as they say. Lots of really skinny
guys in funny clothes will be there, pedaling as quickly as
they can over the roller-coaster course. Up and down. Short and sharp.
It’s sure to be very exciting.

Tensions
between the UCI and the top pro teams are reaching a breaking point
over the heated debate about the use of race radios in elite

the major players to hammer out an understanding. Instead of reaching a
common ground, both sides seem further apart than ever.

When

Definitely a great buy for riders looking for a great and handy camera.
Kill

It’s
a Classic. It’s an extremely hard course. The climbs are very
difficult. They are long, or steep, or long and steep. But it’s not
just the hills and the distance that make it a hard race. The way the
riders race makes it a day of suffering.

Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège) but I’d put
it on a par with the Tour of Lombardy which, though a beautiful race,
suffers slightly these days because it’s held at the butt-end of the
season when there are really only about two dozen fully-fit,
fully-motivated riders.
Dutch

April 13. 2011
Even
with the dust barely settled, and mud barely washed off the brake
calipers, the Ardennes week is upon us. Few are the contenders who
could charismatically challenge both the cobbled and hilly classics in
this 2-month block of spring classics.
The
four-day race opens on Thursday with a 50-minute criterium for the
professional women and is followed by a 6 lap, 47.6 mile road race on
Friday. An eight-mile time trial on Saturday should shake up the
general classification before the race concludes with a 120 minute
circuit race on Sunday.
The
28-year-old – runner-up on the Pijl in 2008 – finished the 201.1km race
in four hours, 40 minutes and 39 seconds, leaving Frenchman Anthony
Geslin (FDJ) in third place, one minute and two seconds back.
The
28-year-old Spaniard finished the 108mile race in four hours, 12
minutes and 57 seconds for his third stage victory of the year, and the
fourth stage victory of his career on the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon.
Wednesday's
Vuelta a Castilla y Leon Stage 1 departs Medina de Rioseco at 12:38pm
CET (6:38am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Palencia
around 5:00pm CET (11:00am U.S. Eastern). Vuelta a Castilla y
Leon live streaming video is scheduled to begin from around 3:30pm CET
(9:30am U.S. Eastern).
Wednesday's
De Brabantse Pijl (or La Flèche Brabançonne) departs Leuven at 12:30pm
CET (6:30am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Overijse
around 5:23pm CET (11:23am U.S. Eastern). La Flèche
Brabançonne live streaming video is scheduled to begin from around
*2:30pm CET (8:30am U.S. Eastern) but may actually begin a bit later.
The
dust has settled – literally – on a hot and dry northern classics. With
Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix now in the rear-view mirror, the brawny
cobblestone specialists are heading toward a well-deserved break
following what’s been some intense and unpredictable racing in the
opening half of the spring classics calendar.
The
Ardennes Classics begin on Sunday with the 46th running of the Amstel
Gold Race (April 17).
First
year pro Ben King (RadioShack) was a last-minute draft for this year’s
Paris-Roubaix after Robbie Hunter was ruled out. The first-year
professional admitted that he was scared of the race before the start
on Sunday but the US road champion finished the race in 76th place
having spent the first half the race working for his team and surviving
until the finishline.
Sandy
Casar finally won the Paris-Camembert after some near-misses in the
past.
To
visit one of the battlefields, you might want to consider doing so on a

better feel for the human scale of the battle and the horror faced by
the soldiers.
The
man who many expected to win - mulleted Kiwi Shane Archbold, came away
with the silver medal; he took time to talk omniums to PEZ once he was
safely back in the land of the long white cloud.
He
abandoned the Tour of the Basque Country last week due to a "health
problem". "It was probably just that the he was sick and worn out,"
team manager Roberto Amadio told Cycling Weekly today. "He'll make his
return in Flèche Wallonne and in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, then we will
re-evaluate."

I
like to call my configuration “the grad student” because you can carry
books (lots of them), laptop, food, dishes (because you are poor and

Before
Paris-Roubaix fades into a distant memory, here’s a quick roundup of
some of the bikes and kit the pros were using to get them across the
pavé. Even when the weather is as good as it was on Sunday, the Hell of

Don’t believe us? Take a look back in history, to Marin County,

Sitting
at home, I was finding it very hard to believe that Garmin-Cervelo’s
endgame was to sacrifice Hushovd’s chances to give Johan van Summeren a
shot at victory in the velodrome, but that’s exactly what happened.
Back
home after Roubaix, it’s time to look through photos from the weekend.
With all the special equipment and fantastic racing, it was hard to
wade through them all. Here’s a gallery from the day, start to finish
with both a technical and racing perspective.
These
athletes, like their Redlands Classics counterparts before them (Neben,
Thornburn, Jackson and Pryde, to name a few) are lasses. Not big burly
blokes like your Schlecks and Van Summerens smashing down the road, but
dainty two wheeled princesses bumping shoulders, attacking bergs and
doing all the other things that Bike Racing calls of from its
athletes.
Quick

Nearly
40 different builders attended, joined by another 26 industry
exhibitors. With the new location the extra space created an impression
that the show was a bit smaller than years past, even though the
overall number of exhibitors was up.
If
there's ever a day for sponsors to look away, it’s Paris-Roubaix. The
race is like no other in terms of the abuse it doles out to both rider
and machine, and it requires special measures to give the racers some
semblance of control and comfort.
Good
quality, well thought out, no nonsense seatpack.
Known
for building bikes almost exclusively in steel, it should come as no
surprise that for the company’s first 29′er, they have eschewed the
carbon bike trend. Instead, they have chosen to build with a material
that is like steel in many ways, with the exception of being lighter,
more responsive, and impervious to rust. That material, is of course
Titanium.
Although
they are confusing licensing (a person) with registration (a
vehicle/bicycle), this is clearly an anti-bicycle proposal.
In fact, many motor vehicles on the road today are not charged fees
this high!

It’s
more than time to take a closer look at the races on the 2011 USA

in the USA with a stage race, the 27th annual Redlands Bicycle Classic
last week in California and ends with a criterium, the CapCrit p/b WCSA

"It
looks like on paper I will win Paris-Roubaix," a modest Cancellara said

see any mistakes. I was targeted by 95 per cent of the bunch. That
still makes me happy to finish in third.''

Five
points on the tech side ahead of this Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix race. The
Tour of Flanders has pavé but things are a lot worse in Paris-Roubaix,
these roads are simply brutal and unlike any other race on the pro
calendar.

for the first time as a professional Sunday. Joining him on the

Time
to cast stones. If you’re a classics rider, a man for the cobblestones,
then Flanders and Roubaix pretty much define your season.
Such
an exciting time of the cycling season is Paris-Roubaix week. All of
the major cobbled classics have been run, and so Paris-Roubaix is a
culmination of racing ahead of the fast approaching hilly classics like
the Amstel Gold Race, La Flech Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Leige.
Unlike
riding in the wild, where you have to pick lines carefully and deal
with the trail surface changing regularly, trail centres and bikeparks
give an element of predictability to mountain biking. The trouble is
that trails are so well-built that they can make you lazy – the flowing
line has been worn in by so many riders that it ribbons off in to the
distance, allowing absent-minded, auto-pilot riding.
As
defending champion and race favourite, Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek)
knows that all eyes will be on him at Paris-Roubaix and that limelight
began at an eagerly anticipated press conference in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Examination
to be held in September, regulation comes into force on January 1st
2012.
The
tires seen during the month of April are rarely seen for the remainder
of the season. Teams choose wide tires, often measuring as large as
28mm, in order to soften the impact and shock of riding cobbled roads
in less than optimum weather conditions. The tires themselves are run
at significantly lower pressure – pressures below 75psi not being
unheard of.
Davis,
California, tops the list.
What
to choose for the demanding parcours of Paris Roubaix challenge? I’ve a
few bikes in my shed so I had some ideas, but chatting around to folks
on Twitter and veterans of the June event it was a resounding – Go
CARBON.
Either
my embrocation is tingling in places I didn’t apply it, or I’m really,
really excited for Paris-Roubaix on Sunday. Watching last week’s Tour
of Flanders reminded me (as if I needed reminding) just what’s so
special about one-day races in April, and this week we get to see
perhaps the most brutal race of the season.
Andre Tchmil going for his

rider Sjef De Wilde and his family have been relieved to find out that
the injuries to his vertebrae are less dangerous than previously
feared. The Veranda's Willems rider crashed hard in the final sprint of
the Scheldeprijs on Wednesday, taking down other riders with him, and
was immediately transported to the Schoten hospital where two fractured
vertebrae were diagnosed.
Russian
Denis Galimzyanov is one of the sprint revelations of the season so
far. The 24 year old rider with Katusha was up there in the results
right at the start of 2011 with placings in the Tour of Qatar and Oman
before taking his first full win in the second stage of the Three Days
of De Panne (note he’d won a TTT with Katusha in 2010) and took home
the points jersey too.
Here
ya go -- Paris-Roubaix, secteur-by-secteur. Apart from the most famous
stretches the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix aren't as well-known as the
hellingen of Flanders... if only because we see them once a year, maybe
twice.
In
total there are 27 cobbled sections in the Paris-Roubaix parcours. Of
these three are new. Well, sort of.

Step
into Dave Brailsford’s office at Manchester velodrome hoping to garner
some clues about his personality or management techniques and you’re
likely to be disappointed. It’s minimalist to a degree that would make
even a particularly fastidious interior designer from Sweden gasp in
wonder.

The
guys at Skil-Shimano have brought back the Koga Cobble Crosser for
another year. The cobbles-tuned, cantilever equipped frames first made
an appearance in 2010′s cobbled classics. Evidently a success, they’re
back for 2011.
For
the bike tech nerd, there’s no part of the season more exciting than
the cobbled classics. France and Belgium in April is a time for crazy
equipment – tires, rims, frames and miscellany that you may or may not
ever see again. King of Tech is the Queen of the Classics,
Paris-Roubaix, where bike and rider undergo punishment unlike any
they’ll see the remainder of the season – at least, on the road.
Paris-Roubaix
is a race of images. Think of the Queen of the Classics and it's images
you come back to most. Words seem superfluous when it comes to l'enfer
du nord.
Two

It

This

He stopped by with examples of their new designs, in particular, the

My
experience with Zipp products goes back 15 years. In 1996 I rode a set
of Zipp 440s, which are analogous to today’s 404s. They were ungodly
stiff, had the menacing sound of a carnivorous machine and a fiberglass
braking surface.
Disappointed

The
2011 Paris-Roubaix contains 51.5km of cobbles spread out over 27
sectors. The first comes 98km into the race and the final sector is at
the entrance to the Roubaix velodrome.
American
hopes that injuries won’t affect chances for Sunday.
Tyler
Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) tangled with Wouter Weylandt (Leopard Trek) in
sight of the line and both went down hard.
With
20 riders at less than a minute on the overall and the top
three tied on time, tomorrow [Thursday], which features a tough final
ascent to Arrate, will be the day that really decides who the top spot
is for.
Leopard
Trek Daniele Bennati won this afternoon's 6.8km time-trial at the
Circuit de la Sarthe to increase his race lead.
Michel
Kreder took his first professional win at the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe
in Angers, out sprinting race leader Daniele Bennati after his teammate
Danilo Viganò opened the sprint with 800 metres to go.
Canadian
Svein
Tuft took tenth place in the stage three time trial at Circuit Cycliste
Sarthe today, a good result for his Spidertech-C10 team, but one which
belies the extraordinary circumstances in which he had to complete the
6.8 kilometre stage.
If
there is one race that can live up to the excitement and
unpredictability we saw in Belgium last weekend, it's surely this
Sunday's Paris-Roubaix (April 10).
No
Paris-Roubaix for Sky Procycling rider.
Wednesday's
Tour of the Basque Country Stage 3 departs Villatuerta at 12:45pm CET
(6:45am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish in Zuia-Murgia
around 5:15pm CET (11:15am U.S. Eastern). Tour of the Basque

(9:45am U.S. Eastern).
Wednesday's
Scheldeprijs departs Antwerp at 12:15pm CET (6:15am U.S. Eastern) and
is expected at the finish in Schoten around 5:00pm CET (11:00am U.S.
Eastern). Scheldeprijs live streaming video should begin from
around 2:45pm CET (8:45am U.S. Eastern).
Wednesday
there are morning and afternoon stages at the Circuit Sarthe.
The morning stage departs Saint-Mars-la-Jaille at 9:25am CET (3:25am
U.S. Eastern) with an expected arrival in Angers of around 11:45am CET
(5:45am U.S. Eastern). The afternoon stage is a 6.8km
Individual Time Trial in Angers. It is scheduled to begin at
3pm CET (9am U.S. Eastern).
Saxo
Bank-Sungard rider Nick Nuyens became a hometown hero on Sunday, deftly
winning the Tour of Flanders over popular favourites Fabian Cancellara
(Leopard Trek) and Sylvain Chavanel (QuickStep) using his standard
Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL3 road race machine.
We
spotted a previously unidentified shallow-profile wheel on the front of
Filippo Pozzato's (Katusha) bike the morning of the Tour of Flanders.
It was labeled 'Vision' but had an uncharacteristic outer weave - was
it in fact a Vision wheel?
For
dual-suspension mountain bikes, carrying two water bottles can be
difficult if not impossible. A side-loading cage can help. Arundel’s
Sideloader is the best cage of this type I’ve used. Many side-loading
cages don’t work that well in reality. The Arundel does and looks great
at the same time.

If
there was one race he was going to start winning, it’s the
Scheldeprijs, also know as the GP de l’Escaut. It’s almost Cavendish’s
race as it is where he took his first pro win in 2007, following it up
with 2008.
Veteran
broadcaster answers a range of questions about the sport.
Paris-Roubaix
that demands more of the machine. Every part of the bike needs to be up
to the challenge. Teams will explore each item to make sure of its
worthiness. Frames, forks, wheels, tires, handlebars, cables, even
pedals are all optimized for the conditions.
The
2011 Spring Classics season is well underway and all news from the Tom
Boonen camp is, “No, seriously, things are under control.”
American
Tyler Farrar believes his Garmin-Cervélo team needs a top three finish
in Paris-Roubaix on Sunday after suffering setbacks in the other
classics.
I
know it’s strange, but one of my favorite pastimes is washing my bike.
I have the tendency to obsess over this. After most rides I’ll quickly
wipe the bike down with baby wipes, but there’s nothing quite like
rolling up the sleeves and getting together a soapy pale of water,
brushes, sponges, degreaser, and making the bike perfectly spotless. It
feels brand new after you’re done.
Cervélo
TestTeam may have been consigned to history, with many of its riders,
both male and female, moving across to Garmin-Cervélo for the 2011
season, but fans will be pleased to know that one of the more
innovative approaches the outfit brought to the sport is alive and well
with the continuation of the popular Beyond The Peloton series of short
films.
Andrew
Talansky has already been impressive through the first few months of
his professional career. At his pro debut with Garmin-Cervélo at the
Tour Méditeranéen in February, he climbed to fourth up Mont Faron and
fourth overall. At Paris-Nice and Critérium International, he finished
among the top-10 in both of the respective time trials.
After
seven seasons in the pro peloton, and already with some handy victories
to his palmarès, 1984 proved to be Sean Kelly's breakthrough year. In
the six weeks between Paris-Nice and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the man from
Carrick-on-Suir became an overnight success.
Young
GB riders have been making a stir in the Flatlands, recently – Sky’s
Geraint Thomas grabbed second at the Dwars door Vlaanderen and tenth at
the Ronde, while teammate Stannard came within sight of winning
Gent-Wevelgem. But the trend was started by AN Post’s Andy Fenn who was
one of the early animators in one of the spring's first big classics:
Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
At
Flanders this past week, Omega Pharma-Lotto were riding two bikes. Some
rode the Canyon Aeroad, Canyon’s aero road bike offering. Others,
including Andre Greipel and Jurgen Roelandts rode a different bike,
which at first glance you might assume is an Ultimate SLX.
We
are riding on mythical roads owned by gods and legends, but today I’m
not worshipping. Instead, I’m being sacrificed on their cobbled altar,
a dish of the day served battered and numb. This is what it feels like
to ride the pave – welcome to Hell…
36
years in, the venerable cycling clothing company remains close to home.
Jeans
giant Levi’s launched its Fall 2011 collection in New York City’s SoHo
last week, not an event that would usually register too much here at
road.cc were it not for the fact that the brand is launching a new
Commuter Cycling Series, which appears to be squarely aimed at those
who want to wear denim while on their bike, whether they’re heading off
to work or an evening in the pub.

Italian-born Garin twice won Paris-Roubaix (1897-98) before winning the

It’ll
be interesting to see if there’s any shift in focus now James Murdoch
moves to New York. Perhaps he’ll continue to travel to London? Perhaps
he’ll want to add a couple of US riders to his team? But it’s also
possible that his personal interest in the team fades. Sponsorship
deals don’t last forever.
Basso
was sixteenth overall, 18 seconds down on leader Andreas Klöden
(RadioShack) after the opening two stages. Fellow Italian Danilo Di
Luca (Katusha) and Basso’s teammate Mauro Finetto also quit the race
during the stage.
Does
anyone else feel that Ghent-Wevelgem’s move to the Sunday before
Flanders has left a gaping hole in the middle of the week between the
Ronde and Roubaix?
He
scored 139 professional wins, including the Three days of De Panne
(five times!), Ghent-Wevelgem, The Tour of Flanders and, in 1987,
Paris-Roubaix. It was one of the most savage editions of the race, ever
- only 47 finished from 192 starters.
Paris-Roubaix
is almost upon us. I struggle with this race sometimes. It is brutal,
dramatic and legendary but at the same time a lottery, where results
can be determined by punctures, crashes and other random events.
To
help Americans stay afloat while tossed into the deep end of cycling
competition, USA Cycling has kept a house in Izegem, Belgium for a
number of years, providing a homebase for juniors, under-23 riders and
women to come over in groups for multi-week blocks of training and
racing.

Redline

Winning
any race always takes a group effort. From the riders on the team to
the support staff, everyone contributes. This weekend was no different.
Taylor
Phinney (BMC Racing Team) has been ruled out of Paris-Roubaix as he
continues his rehabilitation from injury. The American had hoped to
start his first senior Hell of the North but will remain in Italy and
train. His team has not yet confirmed which race will mark his
comeback, but it is hopeful that he will race again in the coming
weeks.
FDJ
has had a hard time getting firm footing on the podiums of major races,
but regardless, they have grabbed out attention during the races in
March for being extremely aggressive and gutsy in their riding.
“I
am surprised. When I heard all this, I really didn’t understand the
fuss. I used a Camelbak, but I don’t know if this helps to gain time."
Lampre-ISD’s
Michele Scarponi insisted today that he, not Michael Goss, is the
number one ranked rider in the world and insisted on a recount.
“Riding
badly or having a bad race doesn’t make one a bad bike racer. But, it
does challenge one’s self esteem, at least for a short while." - Steve Tilford SteveTilford
The
Tour de Suisse has awarded a wild card invitation to Team Type 1 –
Sanofi Aventis. The US-based team includes current Swiss national time
trial champion Rubens Bertogliati.
Fabian
Cancellara (Leopard Trek) has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of
Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix and stated that his rivals know that they “must
fasten their seatbelts” whenever he goes to the front.
Modifications
to the route of this year’s Paris-Roubaix are expected to create a more
intense race with the Forest of Arenberg section now closer to the
finish. A new, never before used section of pave, inserted just after
the Forest of Arenberg and two other sectors after 142km, should also
add an extra twist to the race.
Greg
LeMond looking like he just returned from a minstrel show demonstrates,
it was a Real Roubaix.
The

Welcome
to my little trap.
WADA
chief David Howman has said the doping control protocol could be
simplified, including ending the B-test. As a reminder currently a
sample is put into two sample pots, A and B, and each is sealed in
front of the athlete thus creating a “back up” in case a problem arises
with the first sample.
The
women’s purse would be calculated based on how many men the women beat
in the time trial. Yes! Battle of the sexes! Like, what year is this?
In
a reshuffle following the arrival of co-chairman Shawn Hunter to the
management team of the Quiznos Pro Challenge in January, the race will
assume a new name going forward. The inaugural USA Pro Cycling
Challenge will also air on NBC and Versus networks in August as part of
a multimedia distribution package. The final stage, which finishes at
the Colorado State Capitol, will air live on NBC.
The
“Hell of the North” title is not about cobbles but the state of the
region.
“The
forest is Paris-Roubaix. It’s unique, only in this race do you have to
ride through Arenberg, no other.” Franco Ballerini, Paris-Roubaix
winner 1998.
My
first serious lightweight bike was a modest Dawes made of Reynolds 531
tubing. It had a cottered steel crank with a single chainring, and a
Simplex derailleur with 3x1/8 inch sprockets.
Just
like every other cycling nut in Australia, I stayed up late on Sunday
night glued to the television watching the Tour of Flanders. It was
such an exciting race that I found myself standing up infront of the TV
as if I was on the side of the road on the Koppenberg yelling and
shaking my fists at the riders. And I was alone in my livingroom!
Dutch
rider Lieuwe Westra will not start the Scheldeprijs tomorrow due to an
illness, but the 28-year-old winner of the Classic Loire Atlantique
parlayed his recent string of good results into a contract extension
with the Vacansoleil-DCM team.
Five
easy tricks for befriending the blast.
Daniele
Bennati (Leopard Trek) was relieved to have earned his first victory of
the season in stage 1 of the Circuit de la Sarthe, eight days after his
big disappointment at Gent-Wevelgem.
Sawiris’s
company makes countless wheels for mountain, track, and BMX bikes, as
well as for wheelchairs. I recently visited Wheelbuilder.com’s facility
in the eastern Los Angeles suburb of El Monte, and came away impressed
with the attention to detail and insistence on quality that is so
tangible there.
Hopes
fellow Frenchman will have Flanders form in French race.

The
fear of crashing was nothing compared to the fear of getting dropped.
Milan-San
Remo is the first of the Spring Classics and the longest race of modern
day cycling, at 298 kilometres. The sprinters have a chance to shine in
this race from Italy's fashion capital to the Ligurian seaside town of
San Remo.
The
in-car TV footage from the Tour of Flanders worked for me. I was
sceptical but the production skills made it great.

It
appears that our journey of discovery has arrived at its destination. I
am now confident that I can specify a bicycle that will remain close to
optimal for a long time, rather than becoming obsolete quickly like the
bikes we used to ride.
Francisco
Mancebo (Realcyclist.com) and Amber Neben (HTC-Highroad) sit atop the
season’s first National Racing Calendar standings after their overall
wins at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. Realcyclist.com and HTC also lead
the team classifications for men and women, respectively.
Pretty
great race today. Cole House, Wisconsinite and RealCyclist.com, made an
awesome move with two corners to go to win the sprint over Jonathan
Cantwell, Fly V.
Frank
Schleck’s victory at the Criterium International is to be scrutinised
by the UCI to see if he broke competition rules by wearing a Camelbak
drinks pack on his stomach to help boost his aerodynamic profile in the
decisive final time trial.
Campagnolo’s
teased with an electronic shifting group since before Shimano’s Di2 was
a twinkle in our dream bike builds, but they’ve continued to test
everyone’s patience by putting the group on only a select few riders’
bikes over the years.
The
folks at Fearless Cottage, based in the “People’s Republic of Boulder,”
have launched an interesting campaign to find and train a few people to
run Common Cycles, a bike company to be started in Hale County,
Alabama. Hale County happens to be not only the poorest county in
Alabama, but all of America.

If
you’ve read most of my stuff, you’d know how much I despise criteriums
during stage races, from a racers point of view and a spectator’s point
of view. It is normally super controlled by the race leader’s team. So
much so that it becomes a non stage. That was pretty much the case here
at Redlands, but not completely.
Was
the 2011 event the best Tour of Flanders in living memory? Our reaction
to a brilliant day’s racing.
Stage
3 will run in Marina Romoli country over many of the hills included in
the 7

While
the cobblestone specialists hog the spotlight ahead of tomorrow’s Tour
of Flanders, riders who will take over in the Ardennes sharpened their

John
Bennett (California Giant Berry Farms) captured victory by out-pacing a
small breakaway sprint after being off the front for more than
160-kilometres at the City of Beaumont Road Race, stage one of the
Redlands Bicycle Classic. The youngster crossed the line ahead of
breakaway companions Lachlan Morton (Chipotle Development) in second
and Andres Diaz (Team Exergy) in third.
Sauser

Amgen
Tour of California organizer AEG appears set to launch a women’s elite
time trial to accompany the men’s event in Solvang in May. According to
several sources, invitations for the SRAM-backed event went out a week
ago, and the purse will be paid based on the number of men the women
beat.
American
Lawson Craddock demonstrated the strength of his country's next
generation of professional racers, winning the 8-kilometre time trial
on stage 2a of Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux, while his teammate
Larry Warbasse of Traverse City, Michigan took third.
Theresa

Classic. In two days she’ll leave for the big show in Europe.

The
final climb of the Tour of Flanders, it is neither steep nor especially
technical. It averages 5.5% and maxes at 11% and the cobbles are
reasonable compared to the prior climbs.
The
cobbled climb is the penultimate one in the race, and, coming after
some 240km, is one of the toughest in the race.

When
Ted King signed with Liquigas-Cannondale he didn’t speak a word of
Italian. That had to change and quickly. Thanks to Rosetta Stone and
his move to Lucca, Italy, he’s progressing nicely. Immersion is the key
to his success.
With
a brilliant lead out from teammate Cath Cheatley (Colavita Forno
D’Asolo), Theresa Cliff-Ryan easily won the bunch sprint finish at the
City of Beaumont Circuit Road Race.

scenic start in Rome and a first ever crossing by the women of the
fearsome Mortirolo as the highlights of a testing route.

Riding
badly or having a bad race doesn’t make one a bad bike racer. But, it
does challenge one’s self esteem, at least for a short while.
According
to one of America’s best-known cyclists, cyclo-crosser Tim Johnson,
bicycle advocacy is about as far away from ‘cool’ as one can get. It’s
a world full of recumbents, Day-Glo yellow, helmet mirrors, wool and
tweed; the stereotypes that make self-important racers and hardcore
enthusiasts cringe.

unique frame, this fixed gear also utilizes properties to create an
excellent damping system that is made within the frame.
For
anyone with even a passing interest in bikes, the life of Bicycle
Touring Pro creator Darren Alff is something to be a little envious of.
All through college he dreamed of his ideal job – exploring the world
by bike. It’s a dream many cycling obsessives will be familiar with;
turning it into a reality is a whole other matter. But that’s exactly
what he managed to do.

The
Ronde van Vlaanderen is the greatest race in the world. It has
everything that makes cycling exceptional: long distances, steep
inclines, cobbles and echelons. It also is a race I believe requires
the perfect blend of power, speed, tactics and team strength.
More
than 160 riders on 27 teams will be lining up for the eighth edition of
the Women’s Tour of Flanders on Sunday.
No,
the title doesn’t refer to some of the more obscure corners of the
internet, the kind of place exciteable nerds earnestly discuss great
47th places of cycling history. Cycle Sport has just spent the
afternoon at the Centrum Ronde van Vlaanderen – the museum of the Tour
of Flanders, in Oudenaarde.
Costing
$19.99, it is light, easy to carry and simple to assemble. Step-by-step
instructions are included and all you have to do is, pop, fold, score
and tear the pieces you need to assemble your bike in a flash. No glue,
tape or staples required. And when you’ve tired of the bike, you can
just pop it into the recycle bin.
The
former world time trial champion and two-time Redlands Classic winner
took control in the prologue at the National Racing Calendar and
Women’s Prestige Cycling Series opener Thursday. Neben did the same in
2010 (and 2006, 2007 and 2009).
Bissell
Pro Cycling team riders poised to push for lead.
In
February 2007 American Tyler Farrar arrived in the Belgian city Ghent
alone, his suitcase in one hand and his bike in the other.
Organisers
also confirm route change to this years stage 17.
“It's
always my biggest pet-peeve when I lose GC hopes and my friends tell me
'you should just go in a breakaway'. They have no idea how hard it is
to get into one of those damn things. Then once you're there you need
to ride in the wind all day. Getting into breakaways sucks!” - Tejay van Garderen PodiumCafe
Ronde!
Ronde! Ronde! Ronde! Say it like that a bunch of times in a row, and it
sounds like you’re revving a motorcycle in preparation for a jump over
some absurdly large number of buses. Instead, you’re getting ready for,
arguably, the most exciting week of bike racing all year, a week that
begins with the Ronde van Vlaanderen (The Tour of Flanders) and ends
with Paris-Roubaix.
The
2011 Giant Factory Off-Road Team was presented poolside in Santa
Barbara, California, on Thursday night. With the addition of two new
riders, including top World Cup contenders in downhill and cross
country, the team will field its strongest line-up to date.
Sven
Nys, who, with seven Belgian national titles, a World Championship, and
almost uncountable Superprestige, World Cup, and GVA Trofee wins, might
be the most successful European cyclocross racer of his generation, has
announced he will spend next season racing exclusively in the United
States.
The
MTB Pro's have already started getting muddy.
Earlier
this year we showed you how to create tabletops and doubles to jump on
your mountain bike. This time we're looking at hip jumps and step-ups.
The tools and rules are the same.

Alberto
Contador – the beleaguered Tour de France champion fighting back doping
charges – has signed a deal to become the new corporate spokesman for
the Chick-Fil-A fast-food restaurant chain in its European expansion
plans.
It
will not stop at the radio ban. The UCI has announced new rules to that
will ban carbon-fiber frames by the end of the 2012 season as part of a
new initiative to return cycling to its glory days.
The
penultimate climb of the Tour of Flanders is so good they named it
twice. Some call it the Kapelmuur, some call it the Muur van
Geraardsbergen but it’s the same thing. In fact there’s also the French
name, the Mur de Grammont. Either way it is a decisive climb for the
race.
After
his dominant performance in last Saturday’s E3 Prijs Vlaanderen,
Leopard Trek’s Fabian Cancellara is the undisputed top favorite for
Sunday’s Tour of Flanders. So the question remains: can
anyone defeat him?
"I’ve
written The No-Drop Zone not as a reflection of my experiences and
beliefs, but rather as a compendium of all those who taught me over the
years. I am hopeful that even the most experienced would find it an
enjoyable and even illuminating read."
American
team seeks to exploit its strength in depth.
The
organisers of the Tour of Flanders have announced that the route of
this Sunday’s race will have to undergo a late change after thieves
stole a significant section of cobbles on the fearsome Koppenberg
climb.
De Panne for the race's
finale, a 17 kilometer time trial through the residential streets of
the coastal town.
"Rapid
racing wheelset with electric performance and stunning looks."
Five
food labels that don't lie—and a few that are total bull.

This
weekend's Tour of Flanders will see teams and riders brought even
closer to fans and viewers at home when Leopard Trek, Quick Step, Omega
Pharma-Lotto and Garmin-Cervélo will transmit interactions between team
cars and riders during the race.
Team
Type 1 rebuilds after a devastating crime.
There
had been fears that the Contador case could drag on and on, with the
appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) lasting until
September. But the CAS has the means to expedite a case if all parties
agree.
Burke,
CEO of Trek, started his testimony with numbers that point to the
financial impact of the bike industry on the economy: it’s a business
that generates more than $6 billion in annual retail sales with 15 to
20 million bikes sold in the U.S. each year, and provides jobs for more
than one million Americans.
We
now know why Lance Armstrong really retired.
"Versus
is proud to announce another addition to our award-winning commentary
team – Neil Browne. As you may know, Neil is a prolific blogger,
consummate tweet artist and a very big deal in the cycling industry."
We
must admit we had to do a double take and check the date when this
story first surfaced, but it looks like car manufacturers Audi have
indeed teamed up with hardwood bike makers Renovo to produce Duo, a
three-strong range that apparently mirrors elements of Audi car design.
The
bike world is awash with jokes today. And what they go to prove is that
cycling is pretty much unspoofable, because the reality is actually far
weirder than anything you could make up.
There
has been no official reports on participating teams, but a reliable
source says that 6 teams are being formed, although there is no further
details available at the moment, such as riders and sponsors.
Vincenzo
Nibali is playing with fire and ash and lava. Which is dangerous but
sometimes you have to take risks if you want to win the Giro.
This
unusual story of a round the world journey by bicycle was recently
brought to my attention. Way Wong a 26 year old Chinese student set out
in late February from his home in Yinchuan in central China.
I
figure that Cancellara must be a fan of Jacky Durand as of late as he
seems to have perfected the art of the escape artist and fails the
pelotons capture. Currently they (the Peloton) don’t really have an
answer for when the Swiss train rolls out of the station.
Swiss
Fabian Cancellara tops the bookmakers' lists at 2.5:1 for the Tour of
Flanders on Sunday. He's defending champion, won E3 Prijs emphatically
last weekend and backed by a strong Leopard-Trek team.
Today
might have been the worse feeling I’ve experienced on a bicycle at the
very start of a race. I’ve ridden thousands 1000′s of races. My early
prediction was optimistic after the fact.
