Twenty five years ago this year, Irish cycling was on top of the world.
We had a World Champion. We had the winner of the Tour de France. We
had the winner of the Giro d’Italia. We’d come within a cat’s whisker
of winning the Vuelta d’España. Irish cycling rocked like it had never
rocked before. Oh, we’d had a World Champion before, away back in 1896
when Harry Reynolds won the amateur sprint title. But in the Grand
Tours … before 1987, there was nothing, save a podium place, some stage
wins, a few days in yellow, and a few green jerseys. No, in the Grand
Tours, before 1987, Ireland hadn’t hit the high notes. Or had we?

American
Kristin Armstrong left her mark at the 2012 edition of the Tour of
Flanders. The 38 year-old teamed up with eventual winner Judith Arndt
(GreenEdge - AIS) to hold off the rest of the field on the Flemish
cobbles and climbs. In the sprint Armstrong was no match for the German
rider but the Olympic gold medalist of Beijing 2008 didn't have any
regrets after the race. Armstrong aims to claim a spot in the London
Olympics team in both the time trial and the road race where there are
respectively two and three spots available for American riders.
"It’s
been 8 years since I first saw the cobbled classics live and in person
with our good friends at Velo Classic Tours, so it was high time I
found my way back to Belgium for a week of riding and chasing cycling’s
‘Holy Week’. This past Sunday I was back in the action as we went deep
into de Ronde – roadside and in style."

"We worked hard for this stage and the overall," said Stander. "We will
never say no to the opportunity of winning a stage. Twenty-seven
minutes is big, but not only thanks to us. Our whole team and our
equipment played a role. We learnt our lessons in previous years.

I was talking with world cup cyclocross racer Amy Dombroski who may
have put it best, “It’s like getting ready for battle.” And it’s true.
With all the course holds and the spectators lining it, you’re making
your way through chaos at times. The first World Cup in South Africa
this year was kinda a good example of it all.

It was as if the schoolyard bully, who had been kept in check by a

the inevitable.
