2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, stage 2
"Tour of Utah recovery merged with Tour of Colorado taper. We crashed at the TLS U23 house in Boulder, Colorado. One day we splurged on burgers and ice cream. One day we trained hard. Each of the seven days we tapped our fingers waiting for the familiarity of racing to settle our nerves."

Prologue Profile
Friday's USA Pro Challenge Stage 4 departs Avon at 12:30pm MDT and is expected at the finish at Steamboat Springs at around 4:03pm MDT. USA Pro Challenge live video streaming should get underway at around 2:00pm MDT.

The rolling terrain of Stage 4 will provide spectators with one of the more interesting and dramatic days of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Leipheimer
Leipheimer Wins Vail Time Trial. Beats Vande Velde by a hair, takes lead from Van Garderen.

Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Cervelo) gets some encouragement as he leaves the start.
Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Cervelo) has come heartbreakingly close to two stage wins with runner-up finishes in both the prologue and stage 3 time trials at the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge, but the 35-year-old American is buoyed by his general classification position and the possibility of overall victory.

Ivan Basso
"I love the US; I like riding here. It’s been a difficult season for me, in the bad period I tried to regain my condition. I arrived in Colorado in good condition but not super, super good."

Christian Vande Velde was one of three Garmin-Cervélo riders on a trick road/time trial hybrid setup. According to team mechanic Geoff Brown, this arrangement provided nearly the same position as on his time trial bike but an unusually light sub-7kg weight that was perfect for the run up Vail Pass
Yesterday's USA Pro Cycling Challenge stage 3 time trial wasn't your average race against the clock. Though the course climbed a significant 530m (1,738ft) over its 16.1km (10.0mi) length, the first half was only mildly uphill and many riders were treated to a healthy tailwind – making it neither a blisteringly fast individual effort nor a pure hill climb. Not surprisingly then, many of the bikes used were novel hybrids tailored specifically to the day.

I must admit, begrudgingly, that Colorado makes a pretty spectacular backdrop for a stage race. From the mammoth climbs, to the sprawling vistas, to the dedicated outdoor community who line the roads to cheer the riders, the US ProCycling Challenge has looked really great. And adding altitude to the test of extreme climbing gives the race a wrinkle that few others can offer.

Riders went over the top of other riders because they had no where to go
Michal Golas of Vacansoleil-DMC and Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) were the principal victims of the mass crash at the end of Friday's stage at the Vuelta, but they brought many others down, including a number of big names overall contenders.

Marianne Vos, Flèche Wallonne, Mur de Huy.
Marianne Vos is cycling’s woman for all seasons. She races year-round and wins on all terrains. "Everything is Vos territory," quipped Ina-Yoko Teutenberg recently. And rightly so. Michael Rasmussen (Christina Watches - Onfone) warms up for the afternoon time trial.

Alexander Kolobnev has been in Russia since he tested positive in the Tour de France. We’ve not heard much more. Under the anti-doping rules the deadline for his hearing has expired and the Russian cycling authorities risk a fine for any more delays.

Jesse Sergent Final Podium Plouay
Team RadioShack’s Jesse Sergent (23) took his 2nd 2011 overall victory by winning the Tour International du Poitou-Charentes on Friday. Teammate Michal Kwiatkowsi finished 3rd overall. The last stage win in Poitiers went to Alex Dowsett (Team Sky).

2011 Vuelta a España, stage 4
Waking up this morning, knowing that today would be the first test in the Vuelta for those hoping to stand on top of the podium in Madrid, I have to admit I was slightly intimidated. From a glance at the race book we had quite a stage in store: 3,700 meters of climbing, two large mountain passes, one right at the start and the other serving as the summit finish, with rolling roads in between that were sure to offer little or no respite.

Cannondale broke out their new Slice time trial frame for Ivan Basso (Liquigas) at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge
Cannondale are finally set to replace their long-running Slice time trial bike with a striking new model that will piloted by Liquigas team captain Ivan Basso in today's inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge. A far cry from its predecessor, this latest Slice not only sports a more aggressive, angular shape but also a higher level of component integration and presumably a lower drag coefficient for faster times.

2011 Vuelta a España, stage 2, Talansky and Farrar
Warming up yesterday before the team time trial, the excitement that I had waited so long for finally began to set in. The realization that the biggest race of my life was about to begin brought butterflies to my stomach and a determined smile to my face. In typical, spectacular, grand tour fashion, the start ramp was literally on the beach, with a few meters of boards placed over the sand until we hit the pavement.

Since its move to be the last Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta has had the perhaps-unenviable position as the GT of last resort. It’s a last chance for GC contenders, teams, sprinters, and stage-hunters alike to pull in results. When I first came across the Smart Wallets in Lezyne’s catalog, I thought that they were a neat idea.  Designed to be loaded with a phone, ID, and money, the Smart Wallet is a tool case (the Loaded version comes with tools similar to those shown) that is meant to slip into a rider’s jersey pocket.  Ever since mine arrived, it’s been in use- though not exactly as Lezyne intended.

2011 Tour of Denmark, Michael Rasmussen
It has indeed been a busy year for Michael Rasmussen. Only nine months ago he still didn’t have a team to race for. Today he co-owns and heads a team that was put together at sprint speed just for him. This week his Christina Watches Onfone team raced the Tour of Denmark – the biggest race so far for the Continental squad — but the team’s ambitions go much higher. The hope is to get a wild card for the Giro d’Italia already next year and, eventually, earn a place in the Tour de France.

For the West Australia based Plan B Racing Team, the National Road Series (NRS) presents a number of unique challenges. THE DUST IS EVERYWHERE
Doping has been around in professional cycling nearly since bikers took to two wheels. In early editions of the Tour de France, riders used cocktails of caffeine and strychnine, and then in the 1940s amphetamine use appeared. When questioned if he used drugs, the legendary Italian cyclist Fausto Coppi once said he used them only when necessary, adding that it was almost always necessary.

On Saturday Philippe Gilbert won the Clasica San Sebastian, a feat that was astounding only in its predictability (and yes, our race preview was entitled "Has Gilbert Won Yet?"). This is either an impressive or terrifying development, depending on who you ask, and a pretty good prompt that maybe it's time to come up with a way to measure where Phil now compares to historical figures.

On any stage of the Tour de France, a rider can be excluded from the race for not finishing within a certain percentage of the stage winner’s time.
