After
a big weekend on the north coast of Belgium, the Cyclocross World Cup

"Here
we are, three months deep into the cylocross season. It’s a bit of a
midseason lull for many, with a couple quieter weekends following a big
USGP weekend in Louisville. That said, there’s been plenty of action so
let’s take a look at what’s shaking and who’s winning."
Only
a few more UCI races remain in the USA leading into the USA Cyclocross
National Championships in early January, and the hunt is on
to get as many UCI points as possible, not only to get good starting
position in Madison, but for some, to get selected for Team USA for the
Cyclocross World Championships in Koksijde, Belgium on January 28-29,
2012.

USA
Cycling will announce the full women’s road long team Thursday.
Before
there was the Foreign Legion there was the era of the Pioneers. Years
when individual riders left the comfort and familiarity of their own
worlds and tried to make it in a European peloton that shied away from
outsiders. This is a story about one of them.
No
determination of doping made; technicality causes first of two appeals
to be ruled invalid.
Read
up on the history of the sport and larger than life characters appear.
You don’t just have names, you have nicknames. The “Cannibal”, the
“Eagle of Toledo”, the “Butcher of Sens“. Bernard Hinault scared, Mario
Cipollini wowed. Nowadays pro cycling just doesn’t seem to have these
references and personalities.
2011
Tour de France winner Cadel Evans says he wants to ride the Grand
Boucle at least two more times before considering retirement.
It’s hard to get too excited
about a miniature ratchet wrench, isn’t it? After all, if tools are
cool, than big tools must be cooler. And Prestacycle’s Prestaratchet
isn’t big- it’s tiny. Sometimes, of course, smaller is better.
BikeRadar
verdict: 3 out of 5 stars. "Stiff frame and a stylish image. The wheels
are heavy, though."
The
story of the young Americans, the next generation of US cyclists, men
and women. Not so much the story of who they are, more of how they're
transitioning from riding domestic US races to picking up the culture
of the European cycling scene.

"I

to wear and tear. You can't turn back the hands of time, it just
naturally happens. I do this because I love training and when you can't
train the way you want to because your body says no, it's very
frustrating. I don't see myself having the ability to manage that
frustration for much longer." - Victoria Pendleton BikeRadar

2011
was a year of highs and lows for Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland. A
breakthrough at the Tour de France, where he wore the mountain jersey
for several stages, was overshadowed by a horror crash that could have
killed him and ended his progress. And though he didn't grab any big
victories he was pleased with his performances overall.
SRAM

"The

it was last time I was there, and I will surely blow up as soon as I

Cycling
can be so confusing at times. I'm not talking about the inordinate
amount of prize categories in the Giro d'Italia (Fast Team, Super Team,
Escape Prize, Fair Play Prize). I'm talking about the people who are in
charge of certain aspects of the sport. Doping and the results of
doping are still front page news in cycling.

results.

This

If
you’re not already racing cyclocross by this point in the year, you’ve

So, where to begin?
"To
be a cyclist is to live the balance between risk and danger. I define
danger as something likely to end in a bad outcome. Mount Washington
averages 12 percent; as a result, no one is allowed to descend it. Were
you to try, the odds are that you’d crash from too much speed or blow a
tire off the rim from too much braking; there’s no real room for a
middle ground on that road."

Euskaltel-Euskadi,

last weekend in Europe, this weekend sees a big North American
schedule, offering riders all over a good tune-up before next weekend’s
USGP race.
Rom
Akerson (Specialized) was not on the default list of pre-race favorites
for the 19th La Ruta de los Conquistadores, but after two days of solid
racing, the Costa Rican is the top challenger for current race leader
Todd Wells (Specialized).
His
first noteworthy result was a bronze medal in the Dutch national Derny
championship in 1991, it took him five years to get to the top of that
podium and another four until he and Robert Slippens won their first
Dutch madison championship in 2000.
Todd
Wells told BikeRadar earlier this year that he wasn't at all upset
about not getting a custom stars-and-stripes bike to celebrate his
status as US national cross-country champion. He arrived at this past
weekend's UCI cyclo-cross races in Boulder, Colorado with his
Specialized CruX bikes sporting stock livery – only they were far from
stock beneath the paint.
BikeRadar
verdict: 4.5 out of 5 stars. "An up-to-date, agile 29er from the
pioneers of titanium. Just don’t expect a Ti ride feel."
Designed
around the Body Geometry fit system, Dr. Andy Pruitt and the
Specialized team have created footwear used by more than 70% of the Pro
Peloton today.
BikeRadar
verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. "The Stelvios aren’t cheap but they do offer
both top quality fit and performance."

win it for the 9th time, well off the front with Kevin Pauwels and
Zdenek Stybar, when a light rain started to fall.

The

insufficiently ambitious. Arising from the TIAA-CREF/5280 development

American

RadioShack

The
UCI announced their initial list of eight teams that have been approved

teams approved for entry were Astana, BMC, Garmin-Cervelo, Lampre-ISD,
Liquigas-Cannondale, Movistar, Rabobank, and Sky.
Without
question the most talked about sports technology product this year at
Interbike is Garmin’s Vector, which is a pedal based power
meter. There’s been very little information about the device
until a few weeks ago when final pricing and availability were
announced ($1,500 and March 2012).
Contador
is planning on attending the scheduled four-day hearing in Lausanne
from November 21-24 that will decide his fate. If CAS rules against
him, he stands to lose his 2010 Tour de France crown and serve up to a
two-year ban.

And

The
