While compatriot Steve Bauer came close to a Grand Tour podium for Canada with a fourth place finish in the 1988 Tour de France, Hesjedal not only achieved the nation's first Grand Tour podium finish but claimed the first Grand Tour victory.

Sport offers highs and lows and in reality there can be many moments of boredom. Indeed lest we forget the Giro had its siesta moments too, inevitable during three weeks.

CyclingNews: USA Cycling's junior development program has begun to bear fruit, with the team scoring its second overall stage race victory of the year in the Tour du Pays de Vaud. T. J. Eisenhart of Utah claimed the win and the mountains classification in addition to two stage victories in the four-day, five-stage French race. Tyler Williams (Shafter, California) won the points classification.
