Mathieu van der Poel emerged
mud-spattered but victorious as the undisputed winner of the elite
men's race at the 2015 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, soloing
from the second lap of the Tabor, Czech Republic course.
Wout Van Aert saved Belgium's hopes, denying Lars van der Haar a Dutch 1-2 by catching and out-sprinting him in a close-fought finale. February

Mathieu van der Poel
dominated the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championship race in Bohemian town
Tábor from start to finish to become the youngest elite 'cross World
Champion in history, taking over that distinction from Erik De Vlaeminck,
who was almost 21 when he won in 1966.
Having only turned 20 just two weeks ago, the Dutchman was younger even than the men's U23 winner Michael Vanthourenhout, and together with Wout Van Aert, who turned 20 in September and Lars van der Haar, 23, represents the future of cyclo-cross. February

Michael Vanthourenhout
led a one-two Belgian finish in the under-23 category on Sunday at the
UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Tabor.
Vanthourenhout took the victory by 10 seconds over compatriot Laurens Sweeck with Stan Godrie of the Netherlands third. The big names spent a quiet first lap before Vanthourenhout, Sweeck, Godrie, Joris Nieuwenhuis, and Vojtech Nipl moved forward. “I had a bad start, I was seventh, eighth place, and then I took another bike with softer tires and that was better,” said Vanthourenhout. “So I could go to the front, so my problem was solved.” February

Gianni Meersman
(Etixx-Quick-Step) has won the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road
race, sprinting to victory in Geelong at the head of a nine-rider
group. Simon Clarke finished
second while Cannondale-Garmin's Nathan
Haas was third.
The final selection of the action-packed race was made in the third and final circuit around Geelong when several smaller groups came together, aided in part by Cadel Evans himself. Evans, in his final race as a professional cyclist, finished fifth, just behind Team Sky's Luke Rowe. February

Several
crashes overshadowed an active ride of team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung at
the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
Strong winds and rain caused several crashes. An early group of three was able to establish a lead over the peloton, when the first crashes occurred. Unfortunately Songezo Jim hit the deck after 80 km of racing. Just a couple of kilometers later Serge Pauwels and Matt Brammeier were forced to get on their bikes again. After 175 kilometers of racing Tyler Farrar was the best MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung finisher in 37th place. February

Prior
to winning the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Gianni Meersman had
only ever claimed victory in a single one-day race despite having 14
victories to his name.
The 29-year-old has preferred to rack up victories at stage races and on four occasions has won multiple stages at the same race. February

It
was a good start to the inaugural 174-kilometer Cadel Evans Great Ocean
Road Race for Trek Factory Racing, but what began well did not end well
– at least for Laurent
Didier.
Didier wasted no time in jumping in the early escape to join four other ambitious riders, but after 50 kilometers his day, unfortunately, was over. While grabbing a bottle from the team car, on the opposite side than what he was used to (this being a southern hemisphere race), he lost control on the wet road. Didier broke a metacarpal bone in his left hand and is scheduled for surgery upon his return to Europe. February

Alejandro Valverde opened
his account for 2015 on Saturday by soloing to victory at the Trofeo
Serra de Tramuntana, the third leg of the Challenge Mallorca, and the
34-year-old quipped afterwards that he is improving with age.
Part of an early break of 26 riders, Valverde set off alone with over 30 kilometres of Saturday’s race remaining and he cruised home to victory some 1:23 clear of Tim Wellens, while Sky’s Leopold Konig took third. February

When
you think of the world's great cycling destinations, India isn't a
country that necessarily springs to mind. And yet, when you venture
beyond the bustling city streets, India has a wealth of opportunities
on offer for the intrepid cyclist.
Andy Rogers and Caz Whitehead recently ventured to the Indian state of Karnataka with Exodus Travels to begin a two-week-long journey along the country's south-western coastline. This is the first in a two-part series about that journey. February

Matteo Pelucchi

Pim Ligthart claimed
victory at the Grand Prix La Marseillaise with a well-timed sprint that
saw him finish ahead of last year’s winner Kennerth Vanbilsen
and Antoine Demoitié.
Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet were among the starters for the traditional curtain-raiser to the French season, which took the peloton on a 140-kilometer loop around the hinterland of Marseille, with five categorized climbs on the agenda. February

Cadel Evans walked
away from the peloton in a brilliant way by creating a competitive
event that appears as a very useful legacy to the sport of cycling. In
a few years' time, the first Tour de France winner, who came from
mountain biking and from the Southern Hemisphere, might as well be
remembered as the opener of a new era: the post-Lance Armstrong
period marred by excessive doping. Interestingly, he has hardly spoken
about that. History shows that he was right to do so.
