More miles, more climbing and Leipheimer confirmed for 2012 Tour of Utah...

2012 Tour of Utah course announced.
The capitol building was the backdrop for today's race start.
CyclingNews: Organizers of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah revealed on Tuesday that this year's event, scheduled for August 7-12, will increase the overall distance from 409 miles to 550 miles of racing over six days. New and refreshed courses along the Wasatch Front will provide 37,500 vertical feet of climbing, including a new road race on the final day in Park City via the summit of Empire Pass.

Mancebo wins opening stage at Tour de Beauce.
Defending Tour de Beauce champion Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist Racing Team) is the first leader of the 2012 edition.
CyclingNews: Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist Racing Team) got off to a good start Tuesday in his bid to repeat his 2011 Tour de Beauce victory by winning this year's opening stage. But – unlike a year ago, when a group of 20 gained 20 minutes – the stage did little to separate the top general classification rivals, who all finished in the same time after a chaotic final five kilometres marked by a dangerous breakaway and two crashes.

Taiwan: Tour of Tainan: Po Hong Wu Mighty.
The infamous Lee Rodgers looking candid in CCN Cycling colours (Lee on right with tongue out...)
CyclingNewsAsia: Fall riding in Taiwan is amazing. The weather is warm and dry in the day and cools in the evening. This draws out a lot of cyclists. Winter, on the other hand, is a lonely affair. Long days are met with low (for Taiwan) temperatures, and long lone rides are often done in the rain. The time alone may be unpleasant, but you're taught to handle a bike on slippery roads. It toughens you up.

CyclingFans: Tuesday's Tour de Suisse Stage 4 departs Aarberg at 12:27pm CET (6:27am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Trimbach/Olten at around 5:15pm CET (11:15am U.S. Eastern).  Tour de Suisse live streaming video should get underway at around 3:45pm CET (9:45am U.S. Eastern).

Tour de France form. Is it too late for Andy?
TwistedSpoke: Is Andy hosed and hopeless? Depending on who you read, there’s still time left or there’s no time left to build form for the Tour de France. Glass half full, glass half empty kind of thing. Form is the great cycling mystery and while there are roadmaps, human physiology is an enduring mysterious.

PEZ: 'A person, especially a child, of unusual or marvellous talents' is one dictionary definition of a 'prodigy' - a term often applied to Taylor Phinney. Even in the knowledge that his father, Davis was one of the best cyclists the USA ever produced, and mother Connie was an Olympic road race champion, it's wholly appropriate in the case of the 21 year-old from Boulder, Colorado.

Sagan moves within one of Greipel for most wins in 2012.
Peter Sagan made it look easy
VeloNews: Peter Sagan made it look easy Tuesday to win a rainy, challenging stage at the Tour de Suisse for his third victory in four days. The win was good for young Sagan’s 11th on the 2012 season, moving him within one of André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) for the most so far this year among the elite pros.

Technical FAQ: Does wheel weight matter?
[2011 Tour de France] Does wheel weight really matter? Photo: Casey B. Gibson | www.cbgphoto.com
Lennard Zinn: "There is no question that if a rider climbs at constant speed, it doesn’t matter where the weight is located on the bike. Extra mass could be concentrated on the pedals, at the rims, in the frame, or in the hubs, and as long as the bike’s total weight is the same and it has otherwise the same characteristics, it will create the same resistance to the rider’s efforts."

VeloNews: Johan Bruyneel has clarified the controversial decision to leave popular veteran Chris Horner off RadioShack-Nissan’s Tour de France team, saying that when Horner passed on a start at the Tour de Suisse, he also torpedoed his own chances to race the Tour.

How Time Gaps Are Calculated.
Criterium du Dauphine Libere stage 1 - 2012
CyclingIQ: Last week a mate and I were talking about how the time gaps of breakaways are calculated in World Tour races. The more we thought about it, we came to the realization that we had no clue of how this is done. In this day and age you'd expect that race officials would calculate the time gaps of breakaways using satellite telemetry or some other high-tech solution.

How to succeed in the Leadville Qualifying Series: Wilmington Whiteface 100.
[Wilmington 100k] Racers roll out to tackle the 100K route. Photo: Whiteface/ORDA
SinglrTrack: The first thing you’ll notice when looking at the event page for the Wilmington Whiteface 100 is that all distances are in kilometers and meters instead of miles and feet. This appears to be an oddity in a country where 99.9% of race distances and elevations are reported in English units, but being part of the 0.1% is what makes the Wilmington Whiteface a unique event.

RedKitePrayer: For those of you who haven’t had a chance to visit Santa Rosa, Calif., and do Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge Gran Fondo, you’ve missed out on what is easily the best cycling event I’ve ever entered, let alone completed. The real powers-that-be behind the event are the guys from Bike Monkey. Without them, the veritable army of volunteers that makes the event happen would all be out riding their bikes or watching American Idol. Which begs the question, how did they get to be so good at it?
