VeloNews: Evelyn Stevens was recovering from a hard effort at the Olympics, illness and a long few months of racing in general when she and her Specialized-lululemon teammates hit the start line at the Route de France on August 4. Though she didn’t have high hopes of winning the GC at first, Stevens rode through her fatigue in the first few stages and surprised herself by taking the win — giving her two of the three biggest women’s stage races in the world in 2012.

SingleTrack: Waking up this morning I was less than thrilled about starting the 6-day Breck Epic. This feeling had nothing to do with the race itself, as Mike McCormick does a phenomenal job at organizing and emphasizing the fun factor of mountain biking. It was more fear of the unknown and the sense that I was completely unprepared.

CycleTechReview:  It’s different because it has a ‘radial’ carcass. The carcass – that part of a pneumatic tire, composed of close-packed fibre cords laid in plies held together by rubber, that gives the tire its shape and resists the pressure exerted by the air inside – of a conventional cycle tire is of cross-ply layout.

Mark Cavendish wins his second Tour de France stage of 2012
CyclingNews: The future of Mark Cavendish at Team Sky is still in doubt after Omega Pharma-Quickstep general manager Patrick Lefevere told Cyclingnews that the rider and his current team may rip up his current contract.

A delighted Lars Boom (Rabobank) wins the 2012 Eneco Tour
CyclingNews: Lars Boom (Rabobank) added to his already diverse and impressive palmares when he won the overall classification at the seven-day Eneco Tour on Sunday. It is the Dutchman’s second road victory of the season and demonstrates he’s on track for a strong opening week at the Vuelta a España which begins on August 18.

Regardless of what you’ve heard, the straightest line from point A to point B is not always the fastest.
MBAction:  Regardless of what type of rider you consider yourself to be, bike-handling skills are crucial. Even as a cross-country racer, you can spend all the time you want getting fit climbing, but if you can’t hang when the trail points down, it’s going to be a long race.

Specialized TT2
BikeRadar: As coach and sports scientist Garth Fox explains, if you’re a time triallist, your number one enemy is aerodynamic drag. It is always present and will always be working against your attempts to go quicker.

Reynolds MTN AM Carbon Fiber Wheels
MBAction: Trail riders have been reluctant to purchase carbon fiber rims for two reasons. First, they are expensive (like the Reynolds MTN AM carbon fiber wheelset that’ll set you back $1800). And second, most carbon-rimmed wheels are intended for cross-country racers (not like the MTN AM wheelset). Reynolds didn’t break a price barrier, but they have broken the “for-racers-only” stigma with this wheelset.

Fibrax's 2Face cleats will be on display at the Cycle Show in September
BikeRadar: The firm, who specialize in brake pads and cables, call the cleats 2Face. They are compatible with Look Keo pedals and because they can be rotated, are said to last twice as long as traditional designs. All you do is unscrew the mounting bolts, rotate the connecting plate and reassemble.

Boulder Report: The dispute between the UCI and USADA over jurisdiction in the Lance Armstrong doping investigation may just be a sideshow to the investigation itself, but as sideshows go it’s been illuminating.

Jonathan Vaughters
RedKitePrayer: Most of the cycling world has been abuzz since yesterday when the first links appeared to Jonathan Vaughters’ op-ed piece for the New York Times. It’s rare that we direct readers to another site, but if you haven’t already read the piece by Garmin-Sharp’s director and you follow pro cycling, then this piece is required reading.

Jonathan Vaughters: Why does an athlete dope? I know why, because I faced that choice.

[2012 Tour of Utah, stage 5 - King and Louder] Ben King knows well the strength of mental fortitude. Wil Matthews | VeloNews.com
Ben King: "It’s odd that Brent Pye and I have never crossed paths cycling in my hometown, Charlottesville, Virginia. I was skeptical yet honored when I received a request from this stranger to write a prologue for his new book, 'Your Brain on a Bike.'"

Michael Rogers (Australia)
CyclingNews: Michael Rogers will receive a belated bronze medal after Tyler Hamilton was officially stripped of his gold medal from the 2004 Olympic Games time trial in Athens. "The medal is more kind of a substitute," he says.

Yauheni Hutarovich
VeloNation: Belarusian champion adds sprint power to French team as chances become limited at FDJ-BigMat.

How an unsung band of American cyclists took on the world — and won
VeloNews: Team co-founder Jim Ochowicz recalls the team as being “hot and cold. We were either really good or really bad. And we were really bad at the Coors in ’81.”

The drastically sloping top tube of the izalco ergo-r frame reduces reach to the bars for a female-friendly ride:
BikeRadar verdict: 3 out of 5 stars. "Offers comfort on long rides but lacks the finesse of a true race bike thanks to lower-end spec."
