[2012 Vuelta a Espaņa, stage 5 - Degenkolb wins]
VeloNews: The 168km race, run over a 21km circuit in the city of Logroņo, was enlivened only by a long solo break by Javier Chacon (Andalucia), who built a lead of nearly 12 minutes at one point before being retrieved 30km from the finish.

VeloNews: Chris Froome (Sky) said it was never a question of waiting or not. The race was on, and pity anyone who misses the move.

Dave Zabriskie (Garmin) launches an attack before the first sprint
CyclingNews: Garmin-Sharp's Dave Zabriskie, seven-time US time trial national champion and winner of stages in all three Grand Tours, obviously knows how to suffer. But his efforts so far at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado have taken agony to a new level.

Vuelta a Espana
CyclingFans: Wednesday's Vuelta a Espana Stage 5 departs Logroņo at 1:38pm CET (7:38am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Logroņo at around 5:40pm CET (11:40am U.S. Eastern). Vuelta live streaming video should get underway at around 4:00pm CET (10:00am U.S. Eastern).

CyclingNews: Tejay van Garderen (BMC) timed his attack to perfection to win stage 2 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge from Montrose to Crested Butte. The 24-year-old escaped alongside Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Sharp) on the final climb, shutting down the stage’s early break in the process.

VeloNews: Assan Bazayev (Astana), who like Martin and Clarke was in the break du jour with Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis) and Jesus Rosendo (Andalucia), finished third on the 160.6km stage from Barakaldo to Estaciķn de Valdezcaray.

Joe Dombrowski (Bontrager Livestrong)
CyclingNews: Joe Dombrowski, Bontrager-Livestrong's 21-year-old revelation, told Cyclingnews Wednesday that he has confirmed with a UCI Pro Team for next season but has not yet signed the paperwork. Rumors have been swirling over the past couple weeks about which team Dombrowski would ride with next year.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was quite annoyed to have lost his lead when Sky forced the pace at the same time he was caught in a crash
CyclingNews: A survey of former professionals by the Spanish newspaper AS has found that an overwhelming majority say Sky did not behave incorrectly when Alejandro Valverde fell and then the British team continued to drive the echelon they had just started to form seconds before the crash happened on stage 4 of the Vuelta a Espaņa.

Contrary to what you might think, Team Sky riders take in about 100g of fat per day
BikeRadar: Unless you’ve got a lot of holiday to take and an understanding family, you’ll never ride hundreds of miles and climb thousands of feet, day after day, for three weeks.

Shimano Dura-Ace compact chainset

We have riders wearing the jersey of one team but riding for another. This happens because they have already signed for a new team for 2013 but are racing the Vuelta for their existing team. For now it’s not changed the results but it is easy to envisage a range of scenarios where the results are distorted.

Distraction

TwistedSpoke: Tom Danielson of Garmin-Sharp is letting it go. Known for conservative and careful racing, the Colorado rider has lit the US Pro Cycling Challenge on fire. Torched might be the better word.

[USA Pro Challenge, 2012] Nibali dropped off the breakaway briefly and the group accelerated to try and leave him behind. Photo: Casey B. Gibson | www.cbgphoto.com
VeloNews: Arguments on the road are nothing new in cycling, but on Tuesday we saw an entire breakaway up in arms as its strongest rider, Vincenzo Nibali, sat on the back while the group rode toward a finish climb suited perfectly to the Italian all-rounder.

TwistedSpoke: “I’m not angry. I don’t expect anyone to race my race, everyone is racing their own race.” That was Chris Baldwin of Bissel Pro Cycling trying to explain why Vincenzo Nibali did jack in the breakaway.

Bicycling: "I’m attempting to write this pre-massage, but I think we’ll have to finish it up post massage. Stage 2, WHAT A DAY, we didn’t catch the breakaway until the very final 3km Climb! What a day!"
