Photo: Rider discontent was palpable from the start.
CyclingIQ: Ignorance is bliss, or so the saying goes. As four early attackers in today’s 203km fifth stage pushed ahead of the peloton in 55kph headwinds, little did they know that, behind them, an innocent natural break had descended into farce for the rest of the field.

VeloNews: Power, in its simplest terms, is the rate at which energy is transferred. Power is watching the massive German sprinter, Marcel Kittel — all 6-feet-2 inches, 180 pounds of him — rocket toward the line, grimacing in the rain, his huge frame heaving.

CyclingNews: Froome cements race lead in first time trial.

Photo: A time trial might be a race against time but watching one on TV can be a waste of time..
InnerRing: Time trials are crucial in the Tour de France. Yet for all their importance, watching a rider pedal solo rarely offers great TV.

Photo: Sacha Modolo again demonstrated he is the man to beat.
CyclingIQ: If victory in Xining last Sunday didn’t sufficiently inform his rivals, Sacha Modolo again demonstrated he is the man to beat should a bunch sprint materialize.

Photo: Good value kit but heavy steel-legged fork.
BikeRadar verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. "Heavy but light-handling and responsive enough to be a lot of confidently controlled fun on technical trails."

Photo: Chris Froome has twice been isolated this week, but Sky has time to recover before Mont Ventoux and then the Alps. Photo: Graham Watson.
VeloNews: After being dangerously exposed twice this week, and with the showdown in the Alps looming, can Sky’s notoriously efficient grand tour machine rebound from several days of rough idling to carry Froome into Paris?

Photo: Cadel Evans said prior to yesterday’s time trial that the test would be a really good indicator for the rest of the race.

CyclingNews: Having recently released his warts and all book featuring both the highlights and low lights of his career, titled 'Domestique', Charly Wegelius has some perspective on the often cathartic process.

Photo: Anything can happen in this backloaded 100th Tour de France, but Chris Froome cleared a lot of road toward Paris on Wednesday. Photo: Graham Watson.
VeloNews: After just 11 stages of this 100th Tour de France, Sky’s Chris Froome leads the general classification by more than three minutes, and there’s little reason to think he won’t ride into Paris — barring catastrophe — in yellow.

Photo: Way ahead...
TwistedSpoke: It’s been a topsy turvy Tour de France after the two stages in the Pyrenees and the Mont Saint Michel time trial.
