VeloNews: Since his retirement in 2008, Paolo Bettini has gone from back-to-back world champion to the director of Italy’s national team program. Bettini has faced adversity during his tenure, failing to place a rider on the worlds or Olympic road race podium, but a return to the site of his first elite world championships next week in the Netherlands sees “The Cricket” with his best chance yet to deliver a medal to the Italian federation with Vincenzo Nibali.

VeloNews: Taylor Phinney finished fourth — twice — at the London Olympics a little over a month ago. He joked afterward that he didn’t want to be the dreaded forgotten finisher. He’ll have a three chances to find the podium — and a good shot at the individual time trial title — at the UCI Road World Championships, which open Saturday in the Netherlands.

InnerRing: This Sunday sees a new event in the UCI World Championships, the team time trial. It’s new and relatively unknown and also quite different from the usual team time trials we might see in a stage race. Here’s a look at the race and a quick explainer of what is involved and why there’s no rainbow jersey.

About: One of the best things about riding your bike is that you get a free pass to eat what you want, right? Well, sort of. You can definitely consume more calories, but the right eating plan will give you energy, help you feel better, fuel your body more efficiently and help you lose weight.

[Trick your Avid BB7 disc brakes] Avid BB7 road calipers are the go-to disc brakes for ’cross racers, for now. Photo: Michael Robson | VeloNews.com
VeloNews: It’s become pretty apparent that Avid’s 13-year-old design, the BB7 road caliper, will be the brake of choice this year in the new disc-heavy cyclocross market. The BB7’s simplicity, reliability and ease of setup set it apart from lighter cable-actuated calipers and even some of the hydraulic options currently available.

Stella Yu: "Each saddle is created for a specific type of cycling and cyclist, with unique shapes and designs to fit every saddle need. Saddles for the recreational cyclist tend be broader, providing greater cushioned comfort in a traditional sense. Performance and competition saddles emphasize high-tech comfort; meaning materials and saddle construction are optimized for weight, aerodynamics and comfortable support over the long haul."

PodiumInsight: “Bike racing meant something to me and that’s why I never attempted to cheat to do it because the minute I did that I would have ruined this dream that I was pursuing.”

Cyclismas: There are so many great people that follow the sport already, but it seems to me the key to growing the sport from this direction is getting these fans mobilized and together.  We tend to have cyber fans. They are awesome, and proud to be following the sport… scary I know.  The biggest fan I know is Sarah Connolly (@_Pigeons_ on Twitter).
