[Vindictive Armstrong] USADA's case file paints a picture of a vindictive, ruthless Lance Armstrong. Photo: Graham Watson | www.grahamwatson.com
VeloNews: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency sketched a chilling portrait of a vindictive and ruthless Lance Armstrong in its files Wednesday, painting the seven-time Tour de France winner as a peloton bully, capable of intimidating rivals both on the bike and at the bar.

WADA President John Fajey (l) and Director General David Howman earlier this year.
CyclingNews: While WADA and the UCI closely study the USADA's extensive report into Lance Armstrong and doping at the US Postal and Discovery teams, the question has arisen as to whether such a systematic doping regime could function in the current climate.

VeloNews: USA Cycling officials told VeloNews Wednesday morning that American professionals Christian Vande Velde, Dave Zabriskie, Tom Danielson and Levi Leipheimer — four active riders that testified in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency investigation of Lance Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Service team — had not been suspended.

CyclingNews: Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) took a potentially decisive step towards retaining his Tour of Beijing title when he soloed to victory on stage two to Mentougou, taking a firm grasp of the overall standings in the process.

[2003 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong crash] Lance Armstrong's fairytale career came crashing down on Wednesday. Photo: Graham Watson | www.grahamwatson.com
VeloNews: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency published its case file against the Lance Armstrong Wednesday morning, including sworn statements from more than two dozen witnesses, including 11 former teammates, many whom never tested positive, as well as banking records from a Swiss company controlled by Dr. Michele Ferrari reflecting more than $1 million in payments from Armstrong.

Phil Gaimon: "I’ve been writing the “Ask a Pro” column for Velo for a couple of years now. Normally, I have a semi-obnoxious response for the questions posed to me, but the events of the past few months have had me thinking a little more seriously. There’s a huge group of cyclists that never broke the rules during the sport’s doping era, and they’re largely unrecognized. I wasn’t around then, but I’ve come across a few who have had a huge personal impact on me as I’ve come up."

Team Sky manager described Barry's doping confession as disappointing
CyclingNews: Dave Brailsford, team principal of Team Sky, claims he was stunned by the revelations contained in the USADA's Reasoned Decision in the Lance Armstrong case, saying cycling had “lost its moral compass.” He also said that he was disappointed that Michael Barry had lied to him about his doping background.

Lance unaffected by superbly written sports novel.
TwistedSpoke: The USADA testimony on Lance Armstrong and the most sophisticated doping system in sports was quite an impressive set of legal documents. It was also perhaps one of the finest sports novels ever written.

CNN: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says it will release Wednesday more than 1,000 pages of evidence detailing the involvement of cyclist Lance Armstrong in what the agency calls "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."

CyclingNews: Leipheimer, Vande Velde, Zabriskie, Danielson, Barry and Hincapie.

VeloNews: Canadian Michael Barry, a former member of the U.S. Postal Service team, issued a statement Wednesday admitting to having doped while a member of the team.

VeloNews: Never has a stage so short meant so much to Andy Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan), who was happy to make it through the first two days at the Tour of Beijing.

Distraction

[Feds mum on Armstrong investigation] U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. closed the investigation of Lance Armstrong in February and prosecutors would not comment on Thursday. Photo: Gabriel Bouys | AFP
VeloNews: On February 3, 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice called off its probe into Lance Armstrong and an alleged doping ring at the U.S. Postal Service team. No reasons were given for the dropped case, only the statement from U.S. Attorney André Birotte, Jr., which landed two days before the Super Bowl and quickly washed away.

Hein Verbruggen (file photo) Photo: © Mark Gunter
CyclingNews: Former UCI president Hein Verbruggen who, it has now become clear from USADA's comprehensive documentation of the Lance Armstrong case, presided over the darkest era of sophisticated doping in the history of sport, has reacted to the file by claiming the UCI "could have done nothing, and did not hide anything" about the systematic, highly orchestrated doping program taking place in the US Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams.

VeloNews: Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp) dashed to second in the third stage and defended his best climber’s jersey at the Tour of Beijing, but a gaggle of journalists crowding around him Thursday wanted to talk about something else: USADA’s investigation into Lance Armstrong.

Teammates Leonardo Bertagnolli (Liquigas) and Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas).
CyclingNews: Documents released by USADA reveal the important role of Italian police in the investigation into doping, with Padua-based public prosecutor Benedetto Roberti and his officers uncovering details of the huge financial payments between Lance Armstrong, other riders and Dr Michele Ferrari.
