At only 16 years old, Gage Hecht’s palmares are already something to envy. Splitting his time between road and cyclocross, the Coloradan is one of the most promising talents within America’s junior ranks.

Dominating much of the junior cyclocross calendar in the States throughout the year, Hecht has also posted top results in American elite races and enjoyed success in Europe. At the start of November, he won the first-ever cyclocross junior Pan American Championships.

Reigning cyclocross world champion Zdenek Stybar of the Czech Republic said Friday he would skip next year’s world championships in his homeland because of a shoulder injury.

“I feel like crying saying this, but I’m not going,” the Czech news agency CTK quoted Stybar as saying.

The 28-year-old Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider, who won world cyclocross titles in 2010, 2011, and 2014, tore the ligaments in his right shoulder in a fall during a cyclocross race in Belgium in October.

The women's road World Cup will return to the United States in 2015 for the first time in fourteen years following the addition of the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic to the calendar. The Philadelphia race, formerly known as the Liberty Classic, was part of the first four World Cup series but has not been on the schedule since 2001.

The inclusion of the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic, which takes place June 7, means that the women’s World Cup expands to ten races for the first time since 2009. The series gets underway on March 14 with the Ronde van Drenthe and concludes on August 29 with the GP de Plouay-Bretagne after rounds in Italy, Belgium, China, Germany and Sweden.

Caleb Fairly rode for Garmin-Sharp the last two seasons. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Caleb Fairly will ride for Giant-Alpecin next season, joining three other Americans on the WorldTour team.

Giant already has Americans Lawson Craddock, Chad Haga, and Carter Jones in its 2015 lineup. Craddock and Haga both joined Giant for 2014, while Jones arrives from Continental outfit Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies.

Fairly, 27, rode for Garmin-Sharp the last two years. In 2014, he primarily rode short stage races, like the Amgen Tour of California, Tour of Poland, Tour of Alberta, and the USA Pro Challenge. Fairly is a strong climber who will continue to serve as a domestique.

Photo: Physio and osteopath Lewis Wood helps cyclists to assess their aches and nip niggles in the bud.
After a long ride, many cyclists suffer from pain and tenderness across the outer part of the thigh.

If these symptoms last longer than a couple of days, ie longer than usual post-ride muscle soreness (a day or two), the problem may be excessive friction of the connective tissue across the outer quadriceps muscle, known as iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome.

2014 Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali will have few alternatives if his Astana team is not granted a WorldTour license in 2015. Photo: BrakeThrough Media | brakethroughmedia.com (File)..
Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali would be in a bind if the UCI refused his Astana team a racing license for the 2015 season. Other teams have already allocated their budgets for the year ahead, meaning the Italian would have very few options available.

“Where would I go this late in the season?” Nibali said last week. “It’s absurd. I’m not even going to think about it happening.”

Taylor Phinney looked set to make 2014 his biggest year yet with victory in the Dubai Tour and the American national time trial championships, before he broke his leg during the road race and was forced to miss out on the remainder of the season, including a debut at the Tour de France.

The American will be aiming to get back to his best in 2015, in what will be his fifth year as a professional after making the step up to the WorldTour with BMC in 2011. By that time he was already a two-time world champion on the track and had beaten Levi Leipheimer to become national time trial champion for the first time.

All else equal, decreasing rolling resistance (rr) increases speed. Shorter curves indicate faster, lower rr tires. The two colors on each curve show rr for each tire at different tire pressures, 84 and 112 psi.
"Whether on tarmac or singletrack, a tire with lower rolling resistance reduces the power required to move forward while also providing a better quality ride. The tire absorbs small bumps by not transferring them into the bicycle and rider, resulting in a smoother ride, faster speeds, and better cornering. How could you pass that up?

During a February, 2012 visit to Wheel Energy, an independent tire-testing lab in Finland, I was fascinated by the tests the lab was doing for tire brands like Vittoria, Specialized, Bontrager, and many others."

Photo: RUSADA whistleblower Stepanov says cycling was amongst sports being protected by Russian doping system.
German anti-doping journalist Hajo Seppelt has been in the headlines this week after he and his colleagues at ARD were involved in uncovering what appears to be a massive doping scandal involving Russian athletics.

According to a documentary broadcast on ARD station MDR on Wednesday night, up to 99% of the Russian Olympic team used doping. They were allegedly facilitated and protected by what was described as an East German-style doping system, which included the administration of doping substances and also cover-ups to try to limit positive tests.

A cocaine and anti-depressive cocktail the likely cause of death.

The police investigation sparked by suspicions that Marco Pantani was murdered is expected to end in the next two months after a key autopsy review indicated that Pantani died due to a heart attack sparked by a lethal overdose of cocaine and anti-depressant medication.

In recent months, reports in the Italian media based largely on one-sided information from the Pantani family lawyer Antonio De Rensis, had suggested that Pantani could have been forced to drink diluted cocaine from a bottle after being attacked in his hotel room in Rimini.

Photo: I sometimes see people saying Brian Cookson needs to act on Astana’s licenc.
Astana have been made to wait a week in order to get their license for 2015. You suspect Alexander Vinokourov wouldn’t sweat if you put him in a banya but even the granite-faced Astana team boss must be feeling embarrassed.

Yesterday’s news from the UCI tells us all that’s missing for Astana’s license is a piece of paper or something else that can be fixed in the coming week rather than something drastic. The Kazakh team are likely to get their license.

Photo: He has still no concrete plans about making an attempt in 2015.
As he is no longer able to test himself against Eddy Merckx, Fabian Cancellara is no longer motivated by the Hour Record.

"That is still on my mind, to be honest. But now I have to ride against new record holder Matthias Brändle. That is another kind of motivation than to ride against a legend like Mercx."

Garmin’s premier multisport GPS watch, the Forerunner 920XT, is now available to the public. We’ve had the chance to test the early samples for the past 8 weeks. It’s a big improvement over previous Garmin wearable multisport GPS devices, and sets the bar higher for all other brands of wearable GPS units.

The 920XT is a big step in the direction of convergence: one gadget to do it all. It incorporates the best features of Garmin’s dedicated devices for swimming, cycling, and running, and also includes an activity tracker for counting daily steps taken, calories burned, and hours of sleep.
