"Phew, what a day. it just poured and poured, it was cold, one giant heavy cloud enshrouded the mountain and the peloton throughout. people were shaking and blue by the end, i ‘lost’ two jackets helping folk get warm at the top and don;t mind if i don’t get them back. every soul on that start line, never mind the finishers and the winners, rocked it like kings and queens, they were magnificent." Photo: I think it suits my style because you have to be really switched on every day. It's probably the course that relates best to the 21 one-day races in-a-row philosophy.
In the space of a month, Dan Martin turned what many people were calling a disastrous season into a great one, when he finished seventh in the Vuelta on GC, his first Grand Tour top ten, as well as winning the Tour of Lombardy and taking second on GC at the Tour of Beijing and winning the stage’s summit finish to Miaofeng Mountain. Photo: Keirin riders limber up on the track.
In a vast expanse of woodland in the shadow of Mount Fuji, where the only visible sign of civilisation for miles in every direction is a lonely 7-Eleven store, the 50 students of Japan’s keirin school are able to learn their trade with few distractions.
"That what goes on inside this school happens in such isolation. It's part of the mystique of keirin, and why it has fascinated me far more than UCI track racing ever has. I’m a die-hard roadie. Reading and learning about the rich history and hearing stories from professional cycling interest me almost as much as watching a race play out on television."

Photo: It is far too much to take on. That is why I said every four years maybe have a goal like that. It would probably be better for that year that the Grand Tours are cut down to two weeks, but that is never going to happen.
Despite Oleg Tinkov’s Grand Tour challenge being postponed in 2015, the Russian who owns Tinkoff-Saxo is determined to see the sports top riders compete against each other in all three Grand Tours.
CyclingTips spoke to several people who were both for and against Oleg’s Grand Tour challenge, with some seeing it as necessary for the sport and others seeing it as detrimental. (cyclingquotes.com)
