One bonus of racing in the U.S. is Subway sandwiches in the race caravan. Photo by Ryan Kendrick..
As folks start thinking about cyclocross treads and winter clothing, some of us roadies still have work to do. I’m off to the Tour of Beijing, and then I finish my season at Japan Cup the following week.
Japan Cup will be my last race in argyle. Obviously, as a professional cyclist, I want to race at the highest level, so the main goal of the year was to stay with Slipstream, and the secondary goal was to at least stay in the WorldTour. I suppose my dreams of winning the Tour de France just took a small hit, but I won’t give up. (velonews.com)

The SoCal cyclocross season slipped onto the small cog in a big hurry with a doubleheader kickoff weekend at O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills. This rarely utilized facility in the northern end of the San Fernando Valley provided all the elements typical of the iconic SoCalCross Prestige Series, including fast grass, a couple of dismounts, a bit of pavement and a deceptive degree of climbing. The whole course seemed to consist of false flat, which hammered unsuspecting riders with its accumulative elevation gain. (cxmagazine.com)

Photo: Even Giant – who dictates its own production schedules – has problems meeting its own deadlines for new cyclocross bikes.
Cyclocross is a funny little segment of cycling. While the niche is small when compared to the total size of the pie, its adherents are  passionate to the point where many view the seven to eight months of glorious weather in the off-season merely as prep for the four to five months of suffering-filled racing in the wet and cold. Moreover, it's one of the only categories that are actually showing strong growth – at least in the US. So why do bike companies consistently have problems actually delivering 'cross-specific gear in time? (bikeradar.com)

Alberto Contador ended his season in Italy over the weekend with eyes on a new challenge: winning the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in 2015. “I’ll try to do both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, if someone can do it, it’s me,” Contador said at the 2015 Giro d’Italia route presentation Monday. “I don’t know if I can win the double, but the only way to find out is to try.” (velonews.com)

His money is always where his mouth is.
The Russian, who owns the Tinkoff-Saxo team, has challenged the sport’s best general classification riders to fight it out in all three grand tours next season, and he’s offering 1 million Euro total ($1,267,910) — 250,000 Euro each — to Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana, Vincenzo Nibali, and his own Alberto Contador, if the men compete against each other in the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and the Vuelta a España.

There's also a bike that's yet to be launched – this fully vintage-inspired machine will be called the L’Eroica and will be based on the classic steel Bianchis of old, ridden by such legends as Felice Gimondi and Fausto Coppi. Details are scarce at the moment, but it will have a butted steel frame and feature a smattering of vintage-inspired parts and a Campagnolo drivetrain. (bikeradar.com)

Two doping cases are dreadful news for a team but to make matters worse the Astana team now misses the final races of the year. This self-suspension is itself risks being tarnished if the team management has been orchestrating events to ensure they sit out the race of their choice. (inrng.com)

Photo: Saturday it rained. I was happy for a slippery track. Words by Dan Chabanov // Images by Geoffrey Tomes.
After three weeks of hot and dusty racing, even the anti-mudders were happy to see rain in the weekend forecast for the Providence Cyclo-Cross Festival. Much of the prerace chatter was filled with gossip about the course after photos turned up on the internet of a double flyover. Then a course map appeared showing a ramp right next to the beer garden. Late on Friday, we were treated to Instagram videos of people messing up the flyover, to mostly comical effect. The usual internet peanut gallery erupted with outrage over the “unsafe” course design. (pelotonmagazine.com)
