Though they have a long, acrimonious history, Valverde (left) and Rodriguez (center) will attempt to ride as a united Spanish squad on home soil. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
After ripping each other’s legs off all season, top riders from the contentious Spanish national team have promised to bury the hatchet, and ride as a unit in an all-out bid to win the rainbow jersey on home roads. That could be easier said than done, especially after an acrimonious Vuelta a España that saw team leaders Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim Rodríguez antagonize each other for three weeks across Spain. Photo: Heine launched a line of light-casing tires through his web business, Compass Bicycles. Available in 700C, 650B and 26-inch models, these tires are in the tradition of the legendary tires of old like the Clement Del Mundo tubular or the wide randonneuring clinchers of 70 years ago.
Have you noticed how many cyclists have adopted wider tires? Because of their increased air volume, even the pros use 25s and even 28s for rough courses like Paris-Roubaix. Where racers and recreational riders alike formerly equated narrow tires with speed, we now know, thanks to studies by Jan Heine at Bicycle Quarterly and others, that wider tires mean more comfort, less chance of pinch flats and more cornering grip with no loss of speed. Photo: On those campaign pledges the Independent Reform Commission carries on its work and feels like a promise that had to be kept.
A year ago this week Brian Cookson was elected president in a contest that was close and at times bitter. Today the role of the UCI President is barely a talking point. Still as the sport’s top official Cookson’s role matters.

Feargal McKay has done a good job for cyclingnews.com reviewing Brian Cookson’s manifesto pledges to see what’s happened since. Bear in mind these pledges are ongoing, there was no commitment to achieve everything by now but it allows us to see the direction of travel. With this in mind, let’s take a wider look at the cultural and managerial changes. (inrng.com)

After years spent in relative exile, Greg LeMond, now the only American to have officially won the Tour, has emerged reborn. Photo courtesy Interbike.
There are few men who have ever experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows through a career in professional cycling akin to the ride that American Greg LeMond has taken. LeMond was the first American man to win an elite world road championship (in 1983), the first cyclist to sign a million-dollar contract (in 1984), the first American to win the Tour de France (in 1986), and the first cyclist to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, as its Sportsman of the Year (1989). In all “LeMonster” won two elite world titles and three Tours, as well as the Tour de l’Avenir, Criterium du Dauphine, and the Coors Classic, twice. (velonews.com)

Over the past two years, “Sir Wiggo” — seven-time Olympic medalist, Britain’s first Tour de France champion, a knight of the British Empire — has become something much bigger than an athlete: A celebrity. A reluctant celebrity, never more under the microscope than at a press conference, a hostage under bright lights, where a row of cameras and a room full of journalists scrutinize his every word, his every facial expression, his every exhalation. Organizers announced Thursday that La Course by Le Tour de France will return for 2015 on July 26, the final day of the Tour de France. This past July, the women’s event was held on the Champs-Élysées just hours before the arrival of the last stage of the men’s Tour. With the announcement that the race would take place on the final stage of the 2015 men’s Tour, it appears that it will continue as a single-day event, rather than an expanded stage race. Further details are unknown at this time. (velonews.com)

The UCI management committee has today made important decisions that demonstrate the progress we are making across the board, said president Brian Cookson after Thursday's meeting in Ponferrada at world road championships. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com (File).
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced on Thursday a change to how riders will be judged if they test positive for banned substances. Labels new regime as incompetent: Former UCI President Pat McQuaid has criticized the sport’s governing body for their part in the demise of the Tour of Beijing. The event formed part of the UCI’s WorldTour, and was the first and only event set up by the UCI’s commercial arm, Global Cycling Promotions (GCP). It was confirmed this week that the race would not be held in 2015.

The 25-year-old Rosskopf arrives at BMC after a strong season that included a duel with Cadel Evans in the queen stage at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. After putting himself in the breakaway of stage 6, Rosskopf stayed at the front of the bike race and passed Evans in the final kilometer before finishing second to the Australian. (velonews.com)

Photo: Bicycle tires do not hydroplane. Their contact patch is too small and too round for that.
Most tire manufacturers agree that supple sidewalls and a thin tread make a tire fast, but the role of the tread pattern remains poorly understood. Most modern tires have either a completely smooth tread (slicks) or a coarse tread pattern similar to car tires. Many high-performance tires are smooth with just a few large sipes. None of these tread patterns are optimized. (janheine.wordpress.com)
