Aljandro Valverde wins stage 6 of the Vuelta a Epsana

Alejandro Valverde moved back into pole position at the Vuelta a Espana when he won the first summit finish of the race at La Zubia. Valverde had enough finishing punch to edge out Chris Froome and Alberto Contador at the end of a thrilling stage contested fiercely by all of the race's biggest names. The victory put him back into the leader's red jersey which he had ceded to Michael Matthews in Arcos de la Frontera three days ago. (cyclingnews.com)

Rigoberto Uran was one of the big losers in the first mountain stage of the Vuelta a Espana as the Colombian could only manage 19th. He remains hopeful that he will be stronger when the race returns to the mountains on Sunday. (cyclingquotes.com)

Nicola Ruffoni broke Mark Cavendish’s stranglehold on the Tour du Poitou-Charentes when he beat Roy Jans and the British race leader in the bunch sprint in the morning stage on the third day of the race. Four years after it was close to folding completely because of economic problems, the 1983 Vuelta a España confirmed that cycling's third Grand Tour had - in fact - a secure future and, in sporting terms, it could be every bit as exciting as the Giro d'Italia or Tour de France. The Vuelta's official website claims that "1983 was one of the most spectacular editions in history" and it's honestly hard to disagree. (cyclingnews.com)

The 2015 Vuelta will start in the province of Malaga, local newspaper Diariosur has reported, for the sixth time in its history. It will be the second year in a row that the Vuelta has started in Spain’s southernmost region, Andalusia, although in 2014 it began in Jerez de la Frontera in the south-western Andalusian province of Cadiz. At the age of 30, Swedish pro cyclist Thomas Löfkvist has informed his current employer IAM Cycling that he won’t consider any contract extension beyond the 2014 season. However he’ll remain in the history of the Swiss team as their first ever winner, after he claimed the overall classification of the Tour of the Mediterranean in February last year.
