Photo: This year the Vuelta can probably field the strongest line-up of all the grand tours and even though the main contenders may not all have had the perfect preparation.
The Vuelta a Espana has a reputation as a revenge race for riders that have had little success in the first part of the season. This year some of the world’s biggest stars have been plagued by bad luck and while most of the cycling world lamented Chris Froome’s and Alberto Contador’s crashes in the Tour de France and Joaquim Rodriguez’  crash in the Giro d’Italia, Vuelta director Javier Guillen may have had a hard time hiding his satisfaction. History has a funny way of repeating itself. Chris Horner returns to the Vuelta a España with outsider status despite blowing everyone off his wheel a year ago. Vincenzo Nibali admitted he underestimated the 42-year-old American last year as Horner made history as the oldest grand tour winner, and it’s looking likely that the world-class field that’s poised to duke it out for the Spanish tour could well make the same mistake. Our intuition tells us that tires with a patterned tread are less likely to be slippery in wet conditions, but is that really the case? Matt Wikstrom looks at the factors that influence the grip of road tires. (cyclingtips.com.au)

Photo: Tube shapes play a big role in the aerodynamics of bike frames. Photo: Caley Fretz | VeloNews.com.
"Since most carbon fiber frame builders seem to be using kammtail (as modern as the ’71 Chevy Vega!) tubes for aerodynamic purposes, it got me wondering about the relationship between cross-sectional area and shape. Is a modern carbon frame more or less aerodynamic than my 25-year-old steel frame, using round cross sections but with a much smaller area exposed to the wind?" (velonews.com)

Photo: But my favorite lesson on wheel changes came from Davis Phinney. I believe it was CBS coverage of the ’87 Tour when the 7-Eleven sprinter had a flat.
A bike race is rarely just a single race. Within even a single criterium, there are usually a multitude of races taking place.  If you’ve ever worked as a bike mechanic, yours is a race unto its own. A race mechanic’s job, when done well, is an event that is less transparent than invisible. For all practical purposes, the job of a race mechanic is to correct an event that shouldn’t be allowed to change the outcome of a race. So when done well, a wheel change is a non-event; it’s as if it never happened. (redkiteprayer.com)

One of the concerns with moving to thru axles on road bikes is the time consuming process of wheel removal, a legitimate issue in the heat of the peloton or wheel pits in ‘cross. Paul Components looks like it may have a solution with their upcoming quick release thru axle skewers. (bikerumor.com)
