John Degenkolb claimed stage 4 of the Vuelta a Espana from Mairena del Alcor to Córdoba after unleashing a furious sprint in the final 200 meters. The German won by several bike lengths, gauging his efforts perfectly on a day that saw a number of his sprint rivals suffer in the heat. Vincente Reynes finished second with Michael Matthews doing enough to retain his leader’s jersey, taking in third. (cyclingnews.com)

Photo: My team rode awesome again today, they did everything they could for me and got me in the right position in the final but it was a little bit hectic in the finish...
Michael Matthews was unable to make it two in a row in the Vuelta a Espana after a poor position for the final sprint saw him start his sprint too far back. After a European summer without high temperatures, the peloton is wilting under a scorching sun during the opening stages of the Vuelta a España. “I am from Texas, but this is still hot for everyone,” Chad Haga said before the start of stage 4. “Everyone is just doing what they can to stay hydrated.” (velonews.com)

Photo: The Vuelta peloton is one with some great riders that were, on paper, perfectly suited to the finish yesterday but Matthews looked unbeatable.
Fascinating too to see a rider coming into his own, as Michael Matthews did by taking the win off the plucky Dan Martin. Matthews was confident enough to let Martin try to come back at him and it’s a confidence well deserved as he is turning out to be a very versatile – and very good – rider. (crankpunk.com)

There’s a big gap between audiences in the “new” world of cycling in the English-speaking world where cycling is booming and the “old” world where it is established. To caricature the audience in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand is small… but wealthy; the audience in France, Belgium, Italy and Spain is huge but in a lower income bracket. (inrng.com)
