The Tour de France isn’t the only major stage race starting this week: tomorrow sees the start of the biggest multi-day event in the women’s calendar, the Giro Rosa. The 10-stage race sets off from the ancient city of Caserta, situated 35km north of Naples, with a two-kilometre prologue tomorrow. However, that belies what awaits the riders, particularly towards the end of the race. (cyclingweekly.co.uk)

Photo: Chris Froome is the prime pick.
The closer the race gets the more uncertain the outcome. The year began with Chris Froome as the nailed on certainty but gradually Alberto Contador’s results made people take notice and his ride in the Dauphiné means we could have a three week duel. But now Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde are on the up too and the more names we throw into the mix, the closer the contest. (inrng.com)

Chris Froome said that he had nothing to do with Bradley Wiggins’ exclusion from Sky’s nine-man team for the Tour de France. The race starts Saturday in Leeds, but for the second year in a row the 2012 winner will not be racing. “I just want to make it absolutely clear I do not have a role in selection,” Froome said at the team’s hotel in Harrogate yesterday. "I need to be honest and say that the first Ridleys I saw didn’t impress me. They seemed to be long on stylish industrial design and short on engineering. It wasn’t uncommon to encounter a Ridley frame that might weigh 1400 grams. Oof. I can get that from titanium. But in the last two years the company has made huge strides." (redkiteprayer.com)
