Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) wins the sprint in stage 3
Photo: © Tim de Waele/TDW Sport.
Michael Matthews delivered on the hard work done by his Orica-GreenEdge teammates with a beautifully judged victory in Arcos de la Frontera. The final three kilometers were extremely technical, featuring a pinch point coming into and over a narrow bridge, several tight turns through the town and then a kilometer-long climb up to the finish. For Chris Froome, the cool down after stage 3 of the Vuelta a España took on a novel form, as he completed the ALS ice bucket challenge outside the Team Sky bus with Pete Kennaugh and trainer Tim Kerrison, to the mirth of the fans who gathered for a glimpse of the former Tour de France winner. If stage one’s team time trial of the Vuelta España offered a chance to assess each team’s collective strength, then stage three’s finale of the Vuelta a España on Monday at Arcos de la Frontera will do the same for the favorites - and it will be as much about bike handling skills as pure strength. This Vuelta a España just might live up to its billing as the best-ever field for the Spanish tour. Without a doubt, more big names and established superstars rolled out of the start gate Saturday than any Vuelta before. Grand tour winners. (velonews.com)

Photo: Gabby Durrin, shown here at Essen, was able to pull of a great win at the Vermont Overland. Bart Hazen..
Some spectators might have a difficult time defining what kind of race the Vermont Overland Grand Prix exactly is. It’s kind of a gravel race, but there isn’t exactly a lot of gravel. It’s kind of a road race, but a large part of the course takes place on roads that would destroy the suspension of your average sedan. (cxmagazine.com)

Wilco Kelderman (Belkin)
Photo: © Tim de Waele/TDW Sport.
For Wilco Kelderman, the late addition of an array of star names to the field for his debut Vuelta a España is a source of motivation rather than of intimidation. Just 23 years of age and in his third season as a professional, Kelderman’s apprenticeship to date has been a smooth one. A solid 17th in his first Giro d’Italia last year, he followed that up with seventh this time around and – perhaps more impressively – fourth in a full-blooded Critérium du Dauphiné straight afterwards. Chris Horner has struggled with a chest infection since the Tour de France's muddy cobblestone stage. He was then treated with cortisone, which resulted in his exclusion from the Vuelta. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Chris Horner is hoping his controversial exit from the Vuelta a España does not have an adverse effect on his contract talks for 2015. Horner, 42, was unable to defend his Vuelta title after treatment for a nagging chest cold pushed his cortisol levels below the acceptable standard for the cycling group, MPCC (Movement Pour Cyclisme Credible), prompting Lampre-Merida to remove him Friday from the Vuelta roster. "Hm, if I didn't know better, I'd say it's our first entry from the new way to do grand tour first weeks, the "I Can't Believe It's a Climbing Stage!" stage. Also known to Peter Sagan as the "I Can't Believe How Easy You're Making This For Me!" stage. Wait, what? Moreno Hofland can climb? We'll see about that." (podiumcafe.com)

Wearing a USA Pro Challenge leader’s jersey can be a heavy burden.
Would any rider in the peloton turn down a shot at the yellow, green, or polka-dot shirts if they had a chance? Unlikely, but once you put on that special piece of kit, responsibilities shift. (velonews.com)

Photo: I’m actually pretty calm about it all, I’ve got to find my way a little bit, because it’s been ten years since I’ve been to a Grand Tour without being expected to win it...
After failing to successfully conclude his bid for the maglia rosa at the 2014 edition of Giro d’Italia, Cadel Evans lined up at the Vuelta not as a BMC leader, but reliable lieutenant of Samuel Sanchez. Even though such exceptional situation could be treated as a part of his slow withdrawal from professional sport, the 37-year Australian turns down discussions about his retirement and claims to feel relieved to ride Grand Tour event without pressure. Andrew Talansky by many was considered a dark horse to finish on the podium of the star-studded Vuelta a Espana after the Criterium du Dauphine surprise winner abandoned the Tour de France in highly dramatic circumstances. Recovered from injuries sustained in France, the 25-year old American managed to put his latest disappointments into a right perspective but claimed that he is dedicated to a supporting role he is expected to play in the season’s final Grand Tour.
