At 37, the Australian cycling legend is clearly in the closing stages of his time as a top-level competitor. It’s been a winning year for Ag2r La Mondiale with Jean-Christophe Péraud’s second place in the Tour de France but so much more including Carlos Betancur’s win in Paris-Nice plus the team prizes in the Giro and Tour de France and they might have won in the Vuelta had Domenico Pozzovivo, Carlos Betancur and Alexis Vuillermoz been present and in-shape. Nevermind the speculation, they’re third on the UCI’s team rankings today. (inrng.com)

The Shimano SC-9050 Display Unit gives the rider the information he needs. Battery level and shift mode are displated on the left. The
Synchro shifting, which shifts the front and rear derailleurs with input into just the rear shifter, did not sound appealing. The Synchro system, when I first heard of it, seemed to remove a certain amount of control from the rider. I pictured myself sprinting over a rise in my big ring, and the system kicking me down into the little ring just as I crested the summit, leaving me in the completely wrong gear for the start of a descent. In reality, the rider still has loads of control, and the system adds to the rider’s experience. It doesn’t take away from it. (velonews.com)

Since the lowly mag trainer was firs introduced, there hasn’t been a whole lot of new developments to the tech. SportCrafters’ prototype trainer is set to change that. The SMART Genesis LifeBEAM helmet’s contours are almost identical to this Lazer Helium helmet I’ve been wearing for a few years. They weigh almost the same, too. The Helium, which has no HRM in it, weighs more, at 395g, than the 388g Lazer Genesis with the LifeBEAM HRM built into it. That said, the Helium is an XL and fits great, and the Genesis is an L. Lazer’s advertised weight for the Genesis LifeBEAM helmet is 285g! I don’t know where they found one more than 100g lighter. I have a number of helmets that do fit my head and that are over 100 grams lighter than either of these Lazers, but I don’t notice the weight difference while riding. Photo: Lennard Zinn | VeloNews.com.
"I do use what I think is a particularly excellent solution: a heart monitor built into my helmet! The LifeBEAM SMART cycling helmet has an HRM that transmits via ANT+ to my Garmin unit on my handlebar (or via Bluetooth to a smartphone). It has an on/off switch, an indicator light, and a 170mAh lithium polymer battery rechargeable via a mini-USB port built into a Lazer Genesis helmet." (velonews.com)

Photo: More thorough vetting of riders needed to avoid complications...
The Tiernan-Locke case – and, also, the Roman Kreuziger situation – have shown that there are risks to teams in signing riders from other squads. With the UCI biological passport potentially taking a couple of years to detect anomalies, there is a chance that one team will have to deal with the repercussions of what took place under the contract of another.
