Photo: Picking a winner in Sunday’s World Championships elite men’s road race looks to be about as easy as selecting the winning lottery numbers.
The 254km course in Ponferrada, Spain promises to be blessed with a truly rich field of potential winners. The race will take in 14 laps of the 18.2km circuit that includes two relatively easy climbs. The problem is, each one will be tackled 14 times and that has left many people unsure as to how the race will pan out. (pelotonmagazine.com)

In the years that followed their retirements, Hubert Opperman and Phil Anderson were considered as pillars of Australian road cycling. As riders emerged and performed in the generations that followed Opperman and - many years later - Anderson, their careers were regularly referred to as points of reference, especially with the Tour de France. American Shelly Olds (right) had a career-best sixth-place finish, but had hoped for better. Photo: AFP.
The U.S. women’s team left the UCI World Road Championships on Saturday with mixed emotions after failing to win a medal but taking an important sixth place result for Shelley Olds. “I’m very sad, I was in a position to win or at least podium, so to finish out of the top five is disappointing, but when you look at the big picture, it was my best worlds performance. I tried all day to be in good position, to be in the front. I did a good job up until the last sprint.” (velonews.com)

Marianne Vos (Netherlands) after claiming back-to-back rainbow jerseys in 2013 Photo: © Tim de Waele/TDW Sport.
It wasn’t so much a case of ‘So long, Marianne’ as ‘How long, Marianne?’ Since turning professional in 2006, Marianne Vos had never finished outside the top two in the World Championships road race, but all week in Ponferrada, the speculation was that her remarkable sequence might be about to come to an end. Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff Saxo) attacks, earning the most aggressive rider prize Photo: © Tim de Waele/TDW Sport.
For Fabian Cancellara, it’s a new phenomenon, but for Ireland, it’s a familiar predicament. The curious scoring system used to assign places for the World Championships road race has left the Swiss with a reduced team of three riders in Ponferrada on Sunday, but for Ireland’s trio of Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and Philip Deignan, it’s simply business as usual. As ever, the tactical cloth will be cut accordingly. (cyclingnews.com)

The descent in the World Championship road race route has caused concern for the upcoming elite men’s and women’s races after recent crashes. Junior Italian Nicola Conci crashed in the same spot – a right-hander before the flat road over the dam with 6.5km to race – one day after his countryman Gianni Moscon went down in the Under 23 race. By many standards, Opus is a relatively new company, starting in Canada in 2000 with road bikes. Expanding to meet the needs of commuters, and sharing their love for mountain bikes, Opus quickly grew to explore more niches of the bike industry, including cyclocross (cxmagazine.com).

Marianne Vos may have finished a disappointing 10th at the UCI World Road Championships road race on Saturday but her rivals still think she’s the woman to beat.
