Ryan Mullen (Ireland) in time trial action Photo: © Bettini Photo.
As he stepped on to the podium to receive his silver medal in the under 23 time trial at the UCI Road World Championships, Ryan Mullen was still shaking his head in quiet disbelief. The Irishman had looked every inch a world champion on the rain-soaked Ponferrada course, an impression borne out at the two intermediate check points along the route.

With 13 kilometers remaining, Mullen held a lead of 20 seconds over Australia's Campbell Flakemore and his remarkable average speed of 49.5kph seemed too imposing a bar for any of the late finishers to vault. (cyclingnews.com)

Yesterday in Belgium’s Steenbergcross, the pace was set high immediately, with lots of big names sticking with the lead pace. "Rewind to August 2013 for a moment — after a 15-year career, I announced my retirement from road racing at the Tour of Elk Grove in Chicago. Although I was sad to say goodbye to so many women who had been my teammates, friends, and competitors over the years, at the same time I was excited about the upcoming cyclocross season. Although I had announced my retirement from road, retirement from ’cross was still in the distant future." (velonews.com)

Photo: While I was at the show I had a minor ephiphany. The bike industry spends a lot of time talking about getting more people on bikes and the industry even talks about the next generation of riders.
BMC wasn’t showing much in the way of new road stuff, so the big news was that they’ve aggressively lowered their prices. This Ultegra Di2 TMR01 is now $6999 and while that ain’t cheeap, it is a significant reduction on a bike with more technology than some phones. (redkiteprayer.com)

Photo: Time trialing has always been a natural part of cycling and is the sport in its purest format.
With Fabian Cancellara and Taylor Phinney being the notable absentees, the world’s greatest time triallists will all be on the start line of the most important time trial of the year. For everyone who specializes in the unique discipline, the World Championships is a real highlight that gives them a shot at one of the most coveted jerseys in cycling. Tony Martin is gunning for a record-breaking fourth consecutive win, Bradley Wiggins hopes to fill an obvious gap on his palmares and young guns Adriano Malori and Tom Dumoulin want to prove that they now belong to the real elite and the fierce competition will only add more prestige to an already highly prestigious event. The riding at demo days at most bike shows leaves a lot to be desired, but the Expobici show in Italy is an exception. Located in Galzignano Terme in Euganean Hills south of Padova (Padua), the road riding is exquisite, on narrow, winding, and lightly-traveled roads through these hills known for their thermal baths. And the mountain biking trails feature considerable technical difficulty and a very high fun factor. (velonews.com)

Photo: The UCI has issued a press release saying it won’t comment any further for now and doesn’t mention whether Kreuziger’s provisional suspension has ended.
Roman Kreuziger’s been cleared by the Czech Olympic Committee’s arbitration panel. Fair verdict or whitewash? For now it’s hard to tell as the reasoned decision is online as a PDF but in Czech and so a hard read. What we do know from the past is that the UCI has appealed past cases of “home” federations or anti-doping bodies clearing their riders. I suspect they’ll take the case to the CAS but that’s guessing. (inrng.com)

Six-rider team racing for Howes: Although the USA team for the UCI Road World Championships elite men's road race has only six members, it could be the most cohesive unit the country has put together for the race in years. You've got your base fitness, now it's time to take things further. Tim de Waele.
Former pro cyclist Greg LeMond summed up cycling progress succinctly: “It never gets easier, you just go faster.” What he meant was that all the hard training is not so that you can sit back and cruise when your goal event arrives, but so that on the big day you can deliver the best ride of your life. (bikeradar.com)

Photo: Using a standard 31.8mm clamping surface, the aerobar compatible bars then drop 50mm on each side creating an additional hand position.
Drop bars are known for providing additional hand positions when compared to the standard flat bar, but BP4 seems to be taking that notion to new heights (drops). While many companies are experimenting with different reach, bends, and sweeps, BP4 is adding another dimension to road handlebars – top drops. The admittedly strange looking handlebars drop down where a road bar would typically be flat. The resulting hand positions are claimed to be an improvement over standard bars in both aerodynamics, performance,  and comfort. (bikerumor.com)
