October 29, 2014 Two
podium finishes over the weekend at the Gateway Cross Cup in St. Louis,
Mo., propelled Caroline
Mani to the top of the 2014-15 USA Cycling
Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX) women’s standings.
Mani placed third on Saturday, one minute and two seconds back of winner Erica Zaveta. She followed that up with a second-place ride in Sunday’s race, coming in just 22 seconds behind Sunny Gilbert. (cxmagazine.com) October 29, 2014

headlines ultimately belonged to Nairo
Quintana and Rigoberto
Uran, but in the early stages of Colombian cycling’s year
of years, it briefly appeared as though Carlos Betancur’s
star would shine brightest of all.
Apparently unencumbered by his generous winter padding, Betancur rattled off a nonchalant victory at Paris-Nice in March. He was immediately installed among the top favorites for the Ardennes Classics and speculation mounted as to what he might achieve in his debut Tour de France if he hit his ideal racing weight. That early triumph, however, proved the falsest of dawns. (cyclingnews.com) October 29, 2014 Evelyn Stevens spent
some time last week scouting the elite women's time trial and road
world championship courses in Richmond ahead of the 2015 road Worlds.
Fresh off earning the bronze medal at the 2014 UCI Road World Championships in Spain as well as winning the team time trial with her Specialized Lululemon teammates, Stevens is optimistic about her chances to medal again next year. (cyclingnews.com) October 29, 2014 Dutch
rider Martijn Maaskant
has called an end to his professional cycling career, his management
company announced today. The 31-year-old who placed fourth in both
Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders said he struggled to regain his
top form after a crash in the 2011 Paris-Nice. (cyclingnews.com)
October 29, 2014 "Went
to a Halloween party the other night and a cyclocross race broke out.
The sixth edition of Spooky Cross had the distinction of being Round 5
of the SoCalCross Prestige Series, this year haunting the Baja Beach
Club area of Irvine Lake on the eastern outskirts of toney Orange
County.
As always, Spooky Cross was as much rave as race. Sure, a full slate of classes started being ticked off just after lunch until well past sundown, with some righteous two-wheeled war being waged on a hilly 1.74-mile/2.8km course that was half lawn bowling, half gravel grinding." October 29, 2014 Suspension
manufacturer Cane Creek is recalling DBinlines manufactured from May
23, 2014 through September 15, 2014. These shocks have graphics that
incorrectly identify the adjustment directions for high-speed rebound
(HSR) damping. Following these directions will cause unexpected
behavior by a bike’s suspension, posing a hazard to the rider. The
Fletcher, North Carolina-based company has received four complaints
from customers, one of which involved a report of
injury. (bikeradar.com)
October 29, 2014 October 28, 2014 | Pro
cycling’s calendar runs from late January to mid-October leaving a
vacuum that lasts longer than three months. All riders deserve a
vacation and a chance to do something else. Why stop the show? Could
the sport race all year instead?
It’s always good to question conventions and rituals and the off-season is one habit worth reviewing. I can imagine many a reader saying the riders need a break. Of course. In fact they need several and maybe it doesn’t always have to be in October. (inrng.com) October 29, 2014 Taylor Phinney is
continuing his recovery from a broken leg sustained during a crash in
the road race at the USA Cycling Professional National Championships in
May in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While he's well on his way to recovery, Phinney has many
more months ahead of him and he does not yet know when he will resume
racing. (cyclingnews.com)
October 29, 2014 Although
he didn’t achieve his goal of winning the Tour de France, Alberto Contador has
been named the recipient of the prestigious Vélo d’Or award for 2014 by
the French Vélo magazine.
The Spanish Tinkoff Saxo rider received 66 points in the voting, eight points ahead of the 2014 Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali and a cool 28 up on the third-placed rider, Alejandro Valverde. (cyclingtips.com.au) October 29, 2014 Bradley Wiggins’
future is yet to be made official, but a possible dual announcement
regarding a new contract with Team Sky and his proposed development
team is due in the coming month. Wiggins'
contract is up at the end of the season but, despite receiving a number
of offers, he is expected to stay with Sky next season.

October 29, 2014 Mercatone
Uno president Romano
Cenni has hired a lawyer in a bid to have victory at the
1999 Giro d’Italia assigned to the late Marco Pantani. Cenni’s legal action
follows claims – 15 years old but recently re-aired extensively in the
Italian press – of irregularities in the testing procedures when Pantani returned a
high haematocrit on the penultimate day of that Giro and was forced out
of the race while leading the overall standings. (cyclingnews.com)
Originally
set up to enable Michael
Rasmussen to continue with his career and then persisting
after the rider was handed a two year suspension, the Christina
Watches-Kuma team has announced that it will cease to exist at the end
of the season.
General manager Klaus Hembo has laid the blame for the team’s cessation firmly at the feet of the Tour of Denmark and the Danish Cycling Union (DCU), saying that both played a big factor in the decision. (cyclingtips.com.au) Cadel Evans was on
hand in Melbourne today for the unveiling of the eponymous Great Ocean
Road Race which will be the last of his career. The race, to be held on
February 1, has been awarded UCI 1.1 classification with Evans' BMC team
confirming its appearance at the event along with Australian WorldTour
team Orica-GreenEdge. (cyclingnews.com)
October 29, 2014 "If
you want to be good at pedaling a cyclocross bike, you should probably
not race nonstop from March until September. This year, after getting
sick at the Cascade Cycling Classic in July, I didn’t ride my bike for
a few weeks. This is the first time I took a break going into
cyclocross in five years of elite racing. I think more than anything it
has contributed to how well I’ve been pedaling these past few weeks. So
take a break." (pelotonmagazine.com)
October 29, 2014 “You
know my coach really doesn’t want me to lift weights, but I’m not
listening. I’m an old guy and I feel like it really helps me on the
bike at this point.” That’s my team director talking. I don’t know if
I’d call him an “old guy.” I believe he’s somewhere in his 50s. But
this conversation is one I’ve had with guys (and women) a decade or so
younger and a decade or so older: Coach doesn’t want me to lift. I feel
like I should lift. What should I do? (bicycling.com)
October 29, 2014 | October 29, 2014 "It
seems like some of the guys (Levi
Leipheimer, Christian
Vande Velde,
Tom Danielson,
Dave Zabriskie,
George Hincapie,
and others) who were
involved have gone on to have successful careers in the bike industry,
while others maybe not so much, at least for now. Do you think things
have played out fairly for those who were involved and gave the
affidavits? How do you see it now culturally, as well as
professionally?" (velonews.com)
October 29, 2014 Cycling
Canada today announced the results of its four month independent
investigation into doping in the sport, stating that the consultation
firm LLB Strategies found no organized system of doping or "doping
culture" in Canadian cycling.
The report, commissioned by Cycling Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), entitled, "National Consultation on Doping Activity in the Sport of Cycling" included direct, anonymous testimony gathered between May and August of 2014. It focused only on gathering information regarding doping activity, based upon information from the interviews, "and therefore didn't include researching or studying the situation of doping in Canadian cycling", a press release stated. (cyclingnews.com) David Millar seems
to have been around for ages, 18 years as a Pro to be exact, but you
need to take two years away for a doping ban. Love him or hate him, he
has a fine palmarés. If you want to believe in him or not is up to you,
but he still was a grand champion. (pezcyclingnews.com)

October 29, 2014 A
brief history of British cycling, from James Moore to Chris Froome. It
doesn't try to tell the full story but rather offers up what Bacon considers to
be important pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. One of the curses of current
British cycling journalism is the need by too many writers to place
themselves into the story - to make the story about them - and Bacon here has
served up a very personal history of British cycling. (podiumcafe.com)

season will mark the first time in his career that Jérome Coppel has
ridden for a non-French team having signed for Swiss Pro-Continental
outfit IAM Cycling. The 28-year-old spent the last two seasons with
Cofidis, previously enjoying stints with Saur-Sojasun and Francaise des
Jeux since turning professional in 2008, although his non-selection for
the Tour de France was a contributing factor in moving on.
