The first of six rounds of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup kicks off with men’s and women’s defending World Cup champions Lars van der Haar and Katie Compton on the start line.

An expectant crowd assembled in Utsunomiya to welcome their cycling heroes at the team presentation of the 23rd Japan Cup. Japanese WorldTour riders Yukio Arashiro and Fumiyuki Beppu were on hand, along with a whole host of other WorldTour stars and local talent.
The Japan Cup criterium will take place on Saturday 19 October, followed by the Japan Cup itself on Sunday. (cyclingnews.com)

Nearly two dozen elite-level cyclists will gather in Richmond, Virginia to train and familiarize themselves with the courses on offer for the 2015 world road championships. The organizing committee, Richmond 2015 and USA Cycling will host the two-day training camp October 22 and 23.
Some of America’s top male and female riders will be in attendance, including Taylor Phinney, Evelyn Stevens, and Virginia natives Joe Dombrowski, Andrea Dvorak, and Ben King. (velonews.com)

Elite professional cyclists from around the United States and the World will compete October 18th and 19th in New Jersey’s premier cyclocross event, HPCX (UCI C2).
Hundreds of spectators and athletes will visit Thompson Park in Jamesburg, NJ during the Saturday and Sunday races. As the only UCI race in the United States the third weekend in October, HPCX expects to draw a competitive field for the elite men’s and women’s races. With the opportunity to ride on the same course as the pros, the weekend will also feature men’s and women’s races of all categories, including juniors, and the experienced 35 and 45+ age groups. Geoff Kabush heads to Winnipeg for Canadian cyclocross nationals on October 25 after a September of atypical results and welcome recovery. He fell ill at mountain bike world championships in Norway and couldn’t repeat his 2013 podium performance at CrossVegas. Oleg Tinkov’s 1 million euro challenge to have cycling’s top four grand tour contenders race in the three grand tours of 2015 has died before it even began. The Russian businessman and owner of Tinkoff-Saxo admitted he will have to scale down his hopes or pursue the stars to do it another year.
“The sooner it happens the better it is. For the next year it may be hard,” Tinkov told Sky Sports Thursday. (velonews.com)

UCI leader Brian Cookson said Friday that the recent doping positives could be a very “serious” situation for the Astana team but that he hadn’t met with team officials regarding the incidents.
Astana, home of 2014 Tour winner Vincenzo Nibali, has come under withering pressure after two recent EPO positives by brothers Maxim and Valentin Iglinskiy and now what may be a third positive, as rider llya Davidenok returned an “adverse analytical finding” for anabolic androgenic steroids in a sample collected at the Tour de l’Avenir on August 28. Ilya Davidenok has tested positive for anabolic steroids in the Tour de l’Avenir on August 28. Davidenok, who was with the Astana development team for the last two years, has been a stagiaire with the Astana team since August 1. The 2005 Giro d’Italia was one of the best on record, as Paulo Savoldelli battled Gibo Simoni right to the end of the penultimate stage and the unpaved switchbacks of the 18km long Colle della Finestre. Having been sidelined by his team due to abnormal blood values, Sergio Henao was fully cleared by his Sky team and returned to action in the Tour de Suisse.
