Tejay van Garderen lost time due to crashes and a bonk in the Tour de France but still finished fifth. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Tejay van Garderen is chilling out by now. With the last races of the year in the history books, the 2014 racing season is in the rearview mirror.
By any measure, the 2014 campaign was a great year for the American. He opened the season by finishing second to Chris Froome at the Tour of Oman. But that was followed up by a setback at Paris-Nice, when he abandoned ill. Just as quickly, he rebounded at the Volta a Catalunya to win a horrible stage in the Pyrenees for what would be his first UCI WorldTour-level professional victory. After skipping a defense at the Amgen Tour of California, van Garderen’s high hopes for the Tour de Romandie faded when he hit a tree branch and was forced to abandon. That up-and-down turn of fortune set the tone for the remainder of the year. (velonews.com)

Hong Kong. Riding bikes. Mutually exclusive. Keep them separated. They don’t go together.
I wouldn’t say that’s a controversial opinion. It didn’t even seem like one that was up for discussion, but there we were talking to this guy at Eurobike, who was gushing about how cool riding bikes in Hong Kong is." (pelotonmagazine.com)

The legal battle between Lance Armstrong and the U.S. Department of Justice continues as the government calls Armstrong's claims
The United States Department of Justice responded to Lance Armstrong’s initial legal defenses on October 17, calling he and his attorneys’ approach “baseless.”
In a 27-page document filed in United States District Court for the District of Columbia, U.S. attorneys attempted to assail Armstrong’s central defenses, which essentially amount to this: The United States should have known about the doping program at the U.S. Postal Service team, and that in its sponsorship of the program, the government got much more than it paid for. Photo: But what about the Tour of Hainan and the Tour of Taihu Lake?
The season’s over for 2014. It’s been a great one for OPQS with 62 wins, half as much again as the nearest team. Mark Cavendish has been their best rider with 11 wins and it could have been more were it not for that crash at the finish of the Tour de France’s opening stage. But OPQS’s win rate is helped by 18 of their 30 riders winning. (inrng.com)

Photo: My first coach, Rahsaan Bahati, gave me some excellent tactical advice.
'This year I delayed entering my first race until yesterday, reasoning that it would give me a bit of a breather and a chance to rest my legs and stomach after a road season in which I raced twice and drank hundreds of gallons of fermented electrolyte recovery drink. Also, prior to my season opener at the SPYclocross Series, I had hired a couple of coaches so that I could improve on my string of last place finishes from 2013." (pelotonmagazine.com)

With three major groupset manufacturers, transmissions of anywhere from seven- to 11-speed, and an excess of aftermarket cranksets and wheels on the market, consumers will inevitably suffer from a clash of component compatibilities, particularly when upgrading. Matt Wikstrom takes a look at the known incompatibilities between groupsets from different brands (and within the same brand) along with some emerging compatibilities. Zipp is well known in the professional peloton for their wheelsets, but their Service Course bars and stems are increasingly seeing use in the pro ranks as well. The line is a great choice for team mechanics as the range of bars offers a wide selection of widths and shapes to accommodate the needs of riders. (bikeworldnews.com)

As one of the most promising young American riders, Tejay van Garderen often bears the brunt of high public expectations. Photo: BrakeThrough Media | brakethroughmedia.com.
Talent is a gift, a lovely box with a pretty ribbon. Expectation is a leaden cloak upon thin shoulders.
There is a pressure to perform in sport, just as there is in life, but it’s magnified in such a complex arena like cycling. Small mistakes are extrapolated into patterns of failure, a tome of publicly perceived underachievement. (velonews.com)

Recently retired Thor Hushovd is ‘no hero’ for keeping silent about Lance Armstrong’s doping after hearing about it in 2011, says US anti-doping boss Travis Tygart.
“You’re no hero when you sit still without doing something about injustice against great athletes,” Tygart told Norway’s VG website.

Much like bikes, apparel and wheels, helmets fractured into different categories a few seasons ago—aero helmets, lightweight helmets, and helmets with all the fit bells and whistles. And, like those other products, helmets have begun to morph into single products that do it all. New helmets are light, aero and well ventilated with comprehensive fit systems. (pelotonmagazine.com)

Previously, lactate threshold could be measured only by taking periodic blood samples, usually performed in labs while the athlete rode a stationary trainer or ran on a treadmill. The BSX Insight instead relies on a device that straps onto the athlete's calf and shines an LED light into the muscle. Based on the way the light is refracted, the device can determine blood lactate levels. The company claims its results are 95-97 percent as accurate as traditional tests. (bicycleretailer.com)

Photo: Just as you’d expect, with the hammer down on the flats, an aero bike is faster. But when it comes time to buy a bike you’ll need to factor in more than just raw speed.
In a perfect world, we would all have a quiver of bikes hanging in the garage. Lightweight climber for when you’re headed to the hills. Aero road bike for long days on the flats. And a rig with wider tire clearance and subtly more relaxed geometry for those off-road adventures. Alas, for most of us owning that many bikes exceeds the capabilities of our available disposable income. So which bike is the best bike if you can own just one? The gang from the Global Cycling Network conducted an interesting shoot-out between aero road bikes and lightweight climbing bikes to see which is the fastest. Check out this video to find out what they discovered - and hear some interesting conclusions (roadbikereview.com).
