This
year’s Vuelta a España saw an outcome the bookies didn’t anticipate
several weeks beforehand; Alberto
Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) went from being a rider originally
not even listed in the betting odds to one who took the final red
jersey of overall winner. (cyclingtips.com.au)
October 3, 2014 If
you fell into a coma six years ago and came around yesterday it would
seem as if nothing had changed. Manolo
Saiz was appointed as a team preparador and hours later
one of his old riders, whom the Italian federation but failed to ban,
won Milano-Torino. Amid the wreckage left by Saiz, Alexandr Vinokourov
created the Astana team and yesterday the UCI slipped out another PDF
with Kazakh rider Maxim
Iglinskiy named for a positive A-test for
EPO. (inrng.com)
October 2, 2014 Giampaolo Caruso
(Katusha) won the Milan-Turin one-day race in Italy with a late burst
of speed on the uphill finish to the Superga Basilica, using his
excellent end of season form to get the better of fellow Italian
Rinaldo Nocentini
(Ag2r-La Mondiale). Katusha teammate Dan Moreno finished
third, with Joaquim
Rodriguez fifth and Sergei
Chernetckii seventh for the Russian squad.

retained his Tour of Tasmania overall lead after Wesley Sulzberger

He’s
back. Manolo Saiz,
the corpulent Spanish team manager who was at the center of the
Operación Puerto blood doping scandal in 2006, is making a tentative
return to the peloton. Saiz,
who turns 55 next week, was introduced Wednesday as part of the team
staff for the Basque amateur under-23 team Baqué-Campos. Saiz will be
director of sport and help the team when it travels beyond the Pyrénées
to France, Italy, and Belgium. (velonews.com)
October 3, 2014 On
Wednesday, news broke that Astana rider Maxim Iglinskiy had tested
positive for EPO. Iglinskiy,
winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2012, provided a sample on August 1
that revealed an adverse analytical finding for the blood-boosting
substance. A week earlier, he’d ridden into Paris as a member of Vincenzo Nibali’s
Tour de France-winning team. The next day, he finished 26th at Clasica
San Sebastian. (velonation.com)

MTN-Qhubeka, Becker
joins Hitec. Quintana
targets Tour de France in 2015. (cyclingnews.com)

October 3, 2014 Damiano Cunego has
signed with the Nippo-Vini Fantini team for the next two seasons,
bringing the curtain down on his lengthy spell at Lampre. Although the
2004 Giro d’Italia winner had struggled to attract interest from
WorldTour teams, his arrival marks something of a coup for Nippo-Vini
Fantini, which operated as a Continental team this year but will make
the step up to Pro Continental level in 2015. (cyclingnews.com)
October 3, 2014 October 2, 2014 Patrick Lefevere has
backed Mark Cavendish
(Omega Pharma QuickStep) to bounce back after a ‘mixed season’ and he
believes that the British sprinter can return to his best in 2015.
