The
first instinct on reading Chris
Froome’s reaction to next year’s Tour de France route,
which appears to favor pure climbers over all-rounders, might be to
assume that Froome
has gone rogue, and that his threat to skip the Tour and go for the
Giro and Vuelta will prove to be idle.
Froome offered his thoughts within minutes of the official unveiling of the route: “There’s no two ways about it, next year’s Tour is going to be about the mountains,” he said. “There’s very little emphasis on time trialling which means the race will be decided up in the high mountains.” (cyclingweekly.co.uk) October 24, 2014 Time
bonuses, and the thrilling battle for the yellow jersey in the first
week that come with them, are back in the Tour de France.
As part of a restructuring of the points competition, Tour officials reintroduced time bonuses for the first time since eliminating them for the 2008 edition. Finish-line bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds will be in the offing in the opening nine days of racing, but do not apply to the stage 1 time trial nor the stage 9 team time trial. The remainder of the stages, dominated by the Pyrénées and Alps, will not see bonuses in play. (velonews.com) October 24, 2014 In
a move that will suit the likes of Mark
Cavendish and Marcel
Kittel, whilst potentially upsetting the dominance of Peter Sagan, the
Tour de France’s nine flat stages will feature an overhauled green
jersey points system in 2015.
Thierry Gouvenou, Tour de France course director, confirmed the changes at the presentation in Paris on October 22: “When we are almost certain that the stage will end in a sprint, we will add a little bonus to first place. (cyclingweekly.co.uk) October 24, 2014 Former
Tour de France winner analyzes 2015 route: Pedro Delgado
believes that the format of the 2015 Tour route is not so different to
those adopted by the Vuelta in recent years - and that it does no
favors at all to 2013 Tour champion Chris Froome (Team Sky).

October 24, 2014 American
excited about downtown Richmond loop: This week, the 34-year-old has
been scouting out the time trial and road courses. "It's huge to have
the Worlds be in the US," said Small
to Cyclingnews. "Having Worlds on your home turf adds to the
excitement. I came from volleyball, and it was the same thing. When you
played on your home court, you just played better. Yeah, Richmond isn't
my hometown, but it's my home country." (cyclingnews.com)

the Tour of Hainan, Italy’s Andrea
Palini finally got the victory he was looking for in a
rained soaked day of racing on a tropical island. (cyclingnews.com)

October 24, 2014 October 23, 2014 October 23, 2014 | At
this point, what happened to Taylor
Phinney that day is well known. An in-race motorcycle
slowed down in front of him and others during a descent of the USA
Cycling road national championships. He smashed into a guardrail. His
left leg snapped as a toothpick does under a heavy thumb.
What happens next, though, is the unknown. Phinney has worked and rehabbed. He’s suffered through watching the races, feeling like he’s losing ground every single day as the peloton barrels forward. He talked about his recovery and his ambitions for next season. (velonews.com) October 24, 2014 One
of cycling’s greatest attractions for fans is that it’s basically free
to watch. The flip side is that, relative to other sports, there is
much greater pressure on event organizers and teams to find external
commercial sponsors to provide the financial foundation for the sport.
And although there is an urgent need to diversify the sources of
revenue in the sport, the fact is that pro cycling — by its very nature
— will always be heavily dependent upon commercial sponsorship. Viewed
from this perspective, one of the most pressing issues faced by the
sport is the need to attract and retain more committed and global
long-term sponsors. (velonews.com)
October 24, 2014 Police
caught team Astana rider Lieuwe
Westra on radar driving 189 kilometres per hour (118mph)
in the northern part of the Netherlands on Wednesday evening.
“It is what it is,” Westra told Dutch Leeuwarder Courant website. “I just drove too fast.” The Dutchman finished second in the Paris-Nice stage race in 2012 riding for Vacansoleil and joined Astana this year to help Vincenzo Nibali win the Tour de France. (cyclingweekly.co.uk) October 24, 2014 The
cyclocross season has started and there’s been a few emails and tweets
to say “looking forward to your cross coverage”. But as loyal readers
know there is no cyclo-cross coverage. It’s also a chance to address
why there’s little coverage of women’s racing here too.
Why no cyclo-cross? Because it doesn’t interest me as much as road cycling. I’ve mocked cross before as Belgium’s answer to tractor-pulling but it’s really a sport where participation is superior to watching on TV. (inrng.com) October 24, 2014 Team
Sky has confirmed the signing of Italian sprinter Elia Viviani. The
team will have more emphasis on sprinting in 2015 and hopes that the
former Cannondale rider will help them achieve their goal.

October 24, 2014 Graeme Obree is one
of the great enigmas of the cycling world. He has consistently looked
to further the design and performance of the bicycle, normally from the
humble workshop of his kitchen, and he is an ambassador for all that is
great about cycling and craft. From his two hour records in the 1990s
to his 2013 attempt at the human powered land speed record (HPVA) in
Battle Mountain, Obree
is obsessed with pushing the boundaries of a bicycle. (velonews.com)
October 24, 2014 With
two routes of the three grand tours already confirmed, now all eyes
turn to Spain.
The Vuelta a España, however, is waiting until January 10 to make its route announcement for the 70th edition. The Vuelta is confirmed to start with five days of racing in and around Malaga in Spain’s sunny Andalucía region, coinciding with the peak holiday season in late August. (velonews.com) October 24, 2014 October 24, 2014 "The
brands offering electrolyte drink mixes might have you thinking that
hydration is a precise science. They use long words that you probably
don’t understand - at least I have to look most of them up. But in
reality, hydration is much more simple. In the real world, what we pour
into our bodies revolves around a few things: what are we craving, and
what tastes good, or in the case of many electrolyte mixes, what can we
stomach. Luckily, there is a growing number of tasty and portable
options available. Here is my go-to selection and how I use them."

October 24, 2014 BikeRadar
verdict: 3.5 out of 5
stars. "One of the best fitness bands, but you’d be better with a
proper HRM for biking." (bikeradar.com)
October 24, 2014 "Earlier
this year, Wilier's top-of-the-line Zero.7 won the new Superbike
category in our annual Editors' Choice competition. In retrospect, it
was a nice retirement gift for that frame—Wilier has rolled out a
redesigned version for 2015. The most evident changes on first look: a
new, hourglass-shape head tube, which cleanly integrates with the fork
crown to create a more aero profile and stiffer front end, and the
graphics (available in the blacked-out version you see here, the
Italian tricolor, and Colombian colors), which, to my eye, have the
most elegant look of any Wilier." (bicycling.com)
October 24, 2014 "It's
hard not to draw comparisons. Abby
Santurbane, Liv's global category manager, admonishes me
every time I start. "How do the head-tube and seat-tube angles of the
Avail compare with the Giant Defy for men?" I ask. And Abby says, "We're
not making those comparisons anymore. Avail is built from the ground
up, not tweaked from the men's mold." I note that the junctions where
the Avail's seatpost, top tube, and seat stays intersect look different
than on the Defy. Same answer, less patient this time: Stop comparing.
Though Liv grew out of Giant, and was originally just the women's line
of the brand, it is now not only a separate brand but also a completely
different bike." (bicycling.com)
October 24, 2014 "Financial
theorists might still be debating the efficacy of trickle-down
economics, but we're here to tell you that trickle-down technology flat
out works. This $2,500 bike uses aerodynamic, Squoval 3 tubes that were
introduced on Cervélo's $10,000 RCA frame in 2013. This version of
Squoval—a combination of square and oval—has a rounded leading edge to
channel airflow around the tube, and a blunt trailing edge that causes
the air coming off the tubes to be less turbulent (and thus create less
drag)." (bicycling.com)

was ninth in the Tour de France two years ago and is a past winner of
the Critérium du Dauphiné, the Tour de Georgia and the Tour of
Slovenia. Despite that, and despite being still just 30 years of age, Janez Brajkovic
finds himself hurtling towards November with still no idea if he will
be racing in 2015. (cyclingtips.com.au)

President defends the Biological Passport: Brian Cookson has
responded to claims made by Jonathan
Tiernan-Locke in relation to his UK Anti-doping (UKAD )
hearing and subsequent doping ban, telling the British rider he is
“putting himself in a deeper and deeper hole.” Tiernan-Locke called his
hearing – run by UKAD – a “mickey mouse court”.

October 24, 2014 Team
says they will accept the final ruling in Biological Passport case:
The Tinkoff-Saxo team has reiterated its support for Roman Kreuziger as the Czech rider prepares to fight for his reputation and career in his Biological Passport case against the UCI and WADA. (cyclingnews.com) October 24, 2014 Italian
second-division team, Neri Sottoli may sign Alessandro Petacchi
for 2015, but it races into the new season with uncertainties linked to
past doping cases.
The team fans love to hate may be back, and maybe with Petacchi, if all goes well for general manager Angelo Citracca. If not, he explained that the team has enough sponsorship and is not dependent on a Giro d’Italia invite to continue. (velonews.com) October 24, 2014 Road
race world champion Michal
Kwiatkowski holds 94 Strava KOMs from the recent Tour of
Britain. You may never be world champion, but you could echo his feats
and try to take one of his Strava segments. (cyclingweekly.co.uk)
October 24, 2014 Coming
off a strong year with the Hincapie Sportswear Development, Chris Butler, 26,
will make the jump to the successful upstart Team SmartStop next year.
Proving himself as one of the most promising riders in the sport, Butler had strong performances against WorldTour riders at both the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and USA Pro Challenge, but hopes to build upon his results next year when moving into a GC role for SmartStop. (velonews.com) October 24, 2014 Giro
Treble II shoes: The Treble II is the entry-level model in Giro's shoes
range, and it borrows plenty of design features and style from the
brand’s higher-end offerings.
The synthetic upper has three wide velcro straps to give a firm hold on the foot. The injected nylon outsole is compatible with both two- and thre-bolt cleats, so they will work with just about any pedal system. (bikeradar.com) October 24, 2014 "Every
now and again innovative kit comes on the market that really catches
your eye. These lights from Irish company See.Sense fit into that
category.
First off, they’re really small and neat and they look great; always a good start, especially for a piece of kit normally produced without much of an eye on design." (stickybottle.com) October 24, 2014 Bianchi,
which has been around since about 1885, lays claim to being the world's
oldest continually producing bike company, and to being one of the
first to install derailleurs and pneumatic tires on bikes—big
technological advances at the time. Until the past few years, however,
it seemed to me that, at least judging from the company's presence in
America, Bianchi's biggest accomplishment was catching the wave of
fixie obsession. (bicycling.com)
October 24, 2014 When
Trek unveiled its Émonda line in July, all the talk was about the
flagship SLR 10. Some gawped at its claimed 10.25-pound weight; others
opined that a near-$16,000 bike surely meant the apocalypse was upon
us. Lost in the buzz: The Émonda is not a single bike, but a line with
16 models, including women's versions and two framesets. (bicycling.com)
October 24, 2014 This
is the second race bike introduced by Colnago this year. The first, the
C60, uses the company's signature clover-shaped lugs to join clovered
carbon tubes. That frame is pieced together in Colnago's Italian
factory, and the marriage is of more than materials—the C60 blends
old-world craftsmanship with modern bike design. The V1-r has no such
nostalgia. It's made in Taiwan, and instead of lugs it has a monocoque
carbon design. The process freed Colnago to nip, tuck, and tease more
performance while also reducing weight—at a claimed 835 grams, a 52cm
frame is 215 grams lighter than a comparable C60, and costs $1,450
less. (bicycling.com)
