Photo: Richard Moore considers why Chris Froome would choose to miss the Tour in favour of other races in 2015.
The first instinct on reading Chris Froome’s reaction to next year’s Tour de France route, which appears to favor pure climbers over all-rounders, might be to assume that Froome has gone rogue, and that his threat to skip the Tour and go for the Giro and Vuelta will prove to be idle.
Froome offered his thoughts within minutes of the official unveiling of the route: “There’s no two ways about it, next year’s Tour is going to be about the mountains,” he said. “There’s very little emphasis on time trialling which means the race will be decided up in the high mountains.” (cyclingweekly.co.uk)

At the 2015 Tour, there will be more at stake during a sprint finish than just a stage win. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Time bonuses, and the thrilling battle for the yellow jersey in the first week that come with them, are back in the Tour de France.
As part of a restructuring of the points competition, Tour officials reintroduced time bonuses for the first time since eliminating them for the 2008 edition. Finish-line bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds will be in the offing in the opening nine days of racing, but do not apply to the stage 1 time trial nor the stage 9 team time trial. The remainder of the stages, dominated by the Pyrénées and Alps, will not see bonuses in play. (velonews.com)

In a move that will suit the likes of Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel, whilst potentially upsetting the dominance of Peter Sagan, the Tour de France’s nine flat stages will feature an overhauled green jersey points system in 2015.
Thierry Gouvenou, Tour de France course director, confirmed the changes at the presentation in Paris on October 22: “When we are almost certain that the stage will end in a sprint, we will add a little bonus to first place. (cyclingweekly.co.uk)

Former Tour de France winner analyzes 2015 route: Pedro Delgado believes that the format of the 2015 Tour route is not so different to those adopted by the Vuelta in recent years - and that it does no favors at all to 2013 Tour champion Chris Froome (Team Sky). (cyclingnews.com)

When you played on your home court, you just played better. Yeah, Richmond isn't my hometown, but it's my home country." (cyclingnews.com)

Taylor Phinney won a stage at the Tour of California in 2014, but suffered a season-ending crash shortly after during the national road race. In an interview with VeloNews, he looks to next season. Photo: Casey B. Gibson | www.cbgphoto.com.
At this point, what happened to Taylor Phinney that day is well known. An in-race motorcycle slowed down in front of him and others during a descent of the USA Cycling road national championships. He smashed into a guardrail. His left leg snapped as a toothpick does under a heavy thumb.
What happens next, though, is the unknown. Phinney has worked and rehabbed. He’s suffered through watching the races, feeling like he’s losing ground every single day as the peloton barrels forward. He talked about his recovery and his ambitions for next season. (velonews.com)

Sponsorship in pro cycling is mostly centered around the Tour de France. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
One of cycling’s greatest attractions for fans is that it’s basically free to watch. The flip side is that, relative to other sports, there is much greater pressure on event organizers and teams to find external commercial sponsors to provide the financial foundation for the sport. And although there is an urgent need to diversify the sources of revenue in the sport, the fact is that pro cycling — by its very nature — will always be heavily dependent upon commercial sponsorship. Viewed from this perspective, one of the most pressing issues faced by the sport is the need to attract and retain more committed and global long-term sponsors. (velonews.com)

Photo: But writing about it? That takes a sharper focus which I don’t have.
The cyclocross season has started and there’s been a few emails and tweets to say “looking forward to your cross coverage”. But as loyal readers know there is no cyclo-cross coverage. It’s also a chance to address why there’s little coverage of women’s racing here too.
Why no cyclo-cross? Because it doesn’t interest me as much as road cycling. I’ve mocked cross before as Belgium’s answer to tractor-pulling but it’s really a sport where participation is superior to watching on TV. (inrng.com)

Graeme Obree is one of the great enigmas of the cycling world. Choosing a sports drink, for many, has less to do with science and more to do with what your body craves. Caffeine? Salt? Green tea? There's an answer in this mix. Photo: Logan VonBokel | VeloNews.com.
"The brands offering electrolyte drink mixes might have you thinking that hydration is a precise science. They use long words that you probably don’t understand - at least I have to look most of them up. But in reality, hydration is much more simple. In the real world, what we pour into our bodies revolves around a few things: what are we craving, and what tastes good, or in the case of many electrolyte mixes, what can we stomach. Luckily, there is a growing number of tasty and portable options available. Here is my go-to selection and how I use them." (velonews.com)

Photo: The best of the next-tech race bikes have an unprecedented connectedness to the road.
"Earlier this year, Wilier's top-of-the-line Zero.7 won the new Superbike category in our annual Editors' Choice competition. In retrospect, it was a nice retirement gift for that frame—Wilier has rolled out a redesigned version for 2015. The most evident changes on first look: a new, hourglass-shape head tube, which cleanly integrates with the fork crown to create a more aero profile and stiffer front end, and the graphics (available in the blacked-out version you see here, the Italian tricolor, and Colombian colors), which, to my eye, have the most elegant look of any Wilier." Photo: My first impression as I pushed on the pedals when our pack of riders pulled out of the driveway and onto a rolling country lane was that this bike might weigh less than my shoes.
"It's hard not to draw comparisons. Abby Santurbane, Liv's global category manager, admonishes me every time I start. "How do the head-tube and seat-tube angles of the Avail compare with the Giant Defy for men?" I ask. And Abby says, "We're not making those comparisons anymore. Avail is built from the ground up, not tweaked from the men's mold." I note that the junctions where the Avail's seatpost, top tube, and seat stays intersect look different than on the Defy. Same answer, less patient this time: Stop comparing. Though Liv grew out of Giant, and was originally just the women's line of the brand, it is now not only a separate brand but also a completely different bike." (bicycling.com)

Photo: n cycling, high tech eventually comes at a low price . (Photo by Jonathan Pushnik)
"Financial theorists might still be debating the efficacy of trickle-down economics, but we're here to tell you that trickle-down technology flat out works. This $2,500 bike uses aerodynamic, Squoval 3 tubes that were introduced on Cervélo's $10,000 RCA frame in 2013. This version of Squoval—a combination of square and oval—has a rounded leading edge to channel airflow around the tube, and a blunt trailing edge that causes the air coming off the tubes to be less turbulent (and thus create less drag)." Photo: Bianchi never went away—but it hasn't been this enticing in a while either.
Bianchi, which has been around since about 1885, lays claim to being the world's oldest continually producing bike company, and to being one of the first to install derailleurs and pneumatic tires on bikes—big technological advances at the time. Until the past few years, however, it seemed to me that, at least judging from the company's presence in America, Bianchi's biggest accomplishment was catching the wave of fixie obsession. Photo: Yes, the Émonda is light. But past that, it's such a remarkably well-balanced road bike that its overall performance is what wows you.
When Trek unveiled its Émonda line in July, all the talk was about the flagship SLR 10. Some gawped at its claimed 10.25-pound weight; others opined that a near-$16,000 bike surely meant the apocalypse was upon us. Lost in the buzz: The Émonda is not a single bike, but a line with 16 models, including women's versions and two framesets. (bicycling.com)

Photo: It's a lightweight, aero road bike that Pierre Rolland and Thomas Voeckler used for some stages of this year's Tour de France.
This is the second race bike introduced by Colnago this year. The first, the C60, uses the company's signature clover-shaped lugs to join clovered carbon tubes. That frame is pieced together in Colnago's Italian factory, and the marriage is of more than materials—the C60 blends old-world craftsmanship with modern bike design. The V1-r has no such nostalgia. It's made in Taiwan, and instead of lugs it has a monocoque carbon design. The process freed Colnago to nip, tuck, and tease more performance while also reducing weight—at a claimed 835 grams, a 52cm frame is 215 grams lighter than a comparable C60, and costs $1,450 less.
