Chris Froome said the 2015 Tour de France route may not suit him and he could skip the race. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Chris Froome said the 2015 Tour de France presented Wednesday “is about the mountains” and that he could skip the race in favor of the time trial-heavy Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España.
“There’s no two ways about it, next year’s Tour is going to be about the mountains,” Froome said in a press statement. (velonews.com)

Photo: He'll be back: Chris Froome suggested that he may miss next year's Tour de France, but Stephen Roche reckons the Team Sky rider will be in Utrecht Photo: GETTY IMAGES.
"For Chris Froome to come out and say that he might not compete in next year’s Tour de France is a pretty startling statement, especially as he released his comments right in the middle of a presentation in Paris which he did not attend. Talk about putting a bomb under proceedings! I cannot see him skipping the race, though.
I think Chris was just voicing a bit of frustration at a parcours which – while it features plenty of climbing – does not play entirely to his strengths." (telegraph.co.uk)

Arman Kamyshev took his first professional victory when he became a surprise winner of the bunch sprint on stage 3 of the Tour of Hainan. The Kazakh held off Maksym Averin and Wouter Wippert while Meiyin Wang picked up enough bonus seconds to take the overall lead. (cyclingquotes.com)

Photo: Some spectators reported that Stam fainted prior to crashing.
Six-day derny pacer and former cyclist Cees Stam remains in critical condition after a crash in the Six-Days of Amsterdam last night. Stam fell while pacing his grandson Yoeri Havik in the derny race in the second night and took down others in the accident.
The 68-year-old Dutchman spent the night at the University Hospital in Amsterdam. “Stam has displayed some positive signs overnight, but his condition overall remains critical,” read a race statement today. “The organization remains in close contact with the family.” (cyclingweekly.co.uk)

Over the weekend we were shocked by the tragic death of Kenyan professional cyclist John Njoroge Muya at the Tour of Matabungkay. Jennifer Carruthers was the race photographer on the scene and she gives her account of the circumstances that lead to the terrible loss of a husband, father, and member of the cycling community. Photo: A mystery for years, for others this tool is a piece of industry history..
The tool is heavy, shiny, and well-made. It resembles a part from an expensive European espresso machine, with an array of baffling knobs, screws, and handles.
Some say it resembles a tattoo gun.
What it doesn’t resemble - for most people - is anything seen in a bike factory or on a shop work bench. (bicycleretailer.com)

Photo: Bon appetite, let’s ride! November 5-9. Entirely worth your while.
"A wise man once said, A bad day on the bike is better than a good day at work. Okay, but what happens then when you ride a bike for a living? Or where do you end up in that matrix when you ride a bike for a living AND you have a good day on the bike? Surely minds are blown." (iamtedking.com)

he 2015 Tour de France route will feature four consecutive days in the Alps. Photo: (cyclingweekly.co.uk).
For the first time in Tour de France history, the legendary Alpe d’Huez will be climbed on the penultimate stage of the 2015 edition before the final procession in Paris.
That was one of several surprises unveiled on Wednesday as the official route for the 2015 Tour, from July 4-26, was announced in Paris by Tour director Christian Prudhomme. (velonews.com)

With ample climbing on the menu, the 2015 Tour de France will likely suit Alberto Contador. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com (File).
For Alberto Contador, the harder, the better. So the Spaniard likes what he sees in a surprising, climbing-heavy 2015 Tour de France route revealed Wednesday.
Contador, who has already confirmed he will race the Giro d’Italia in May, said the Tour route is unlike anything he’s seen before.
“It’s a Tour I like,” Contador said Wednesday. “It’s the hardest of the past few years, and it will demand the best of me to recover well after the Giro, but I will prepare for it as best I can.” (cyclingnews.com)

"This gives climbers a focus right til the end," says 2008 Tour winner: Spain's last winner on the Alpe d'Huez, Carlos Sastre, says he feels that the Tour's last mountainous stage ending on the mythical summit finish "will guarantee a spectacular finale to the race, even though it may not be decisive." After a breakout performance at the 2013 Tour de France, where he won the best young rider's jersey and the king of the mountains jersey, Nairo Quintana will return to France in 2015 with his sights set on yellow. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com.
Sometimes it seems the Tour de France designs a course with one rider in mind. That was the case in 2012, when ASO unveiled a route with 100km of individual time trials, meaning that Bradley Wiggins only had to stay upright, and he stood a very good chance at making history as the race’s first British champion.
For 2015, it seems that the Tour organization had one rider in mind when it designed a course with just a single individual time trial, and no less than six uphill finales: Nairo Quintana. (velonews.com)

Photo: The Feel: the sign at the start says Montvernier is 8km away and you should turn the right. Ignore it.
New for the 2015 Tour, this is Hairpin Heaven. Alpe d’Huez might be famous for its 21 bends but here’s a road with 18 hairpins in short formation. One bend follows another, a helter skelter for the road cyclist and just a short spin away from some of the famous climbs of the Tour de France. But is it as good as it looks?
The Route: the D77B starts in Pontamafrey-Montpascal in the Savoie department of France. The road heads north to Montvernier. The climb is 3.8km long and averages 8%. (inrng.com)

"This past weekend, I packed my race bag one more time for a trip to Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan. Saturday was Founder’s Peak-to-Peak mountain bike race, the wrap of my mountain bike season. I’ve been excited about this race for months. For one, I’ve never been to Michigan and there’s no better way to see a place than by bike. It promised to give me an opportunity to race a type of terrain I don’t generally set wheels on: smooth, mostly flat and very fast. It also has a pretty generous purse." (bicycling.com)

Photo: Obviously one of the major developments that Luck has been working on is that of the integrated power meter. Photography by Dave Everett
"Initially there were two things that stopped me wandering past Luck’s booth at Eurobike. Firstly the fact I’d not seen the brand’s footwear in over 10 years, since a friend had owned a glistening white pair back in 2001. I’d envied him - they were some of the nicest shoes I’d seen back then. I was happily surprised at Eurobike to see that Luck was still about and producing good-looking shoes." (cyclingtips.com.au)

Lance Armstrong may not, as previously reported, participate at the Gran Fondo Hincapie this weekend in South Carolina, due to the event’s sanctioning through USA Cycling.
Because of his lifetime ban, Armstrong is prohibited from participating in any event sanctioned by any signatory to the World Anti-Doping [WADA] Code.
What is at question is the status of the gran fondo, and how that lifetime ban applies. (velonews.com)

Photo: Don’t call it a prologue, the opening time trial has been known for ages but assumes more relevance as the only solo TT in the race.
The route for the 2015 Tour de France is out. As usual a lot leaks out before, velowire.com sleuths the stages and yesterday race organizer ASO accidentally put a PDF online with the route yesterday. But it’s still a comforting ritual, a projection to the other side of winter.
This is a chance to see the map for real and to get more info on the route such as the intermediate climbs, the amount of time trialling and novelties such as the return of time bonuses. Plus race organizers can sell us a story, a theme for 2015. (inrng.com)

Astana manager on Licence Commission and CIRC: While Vincenzo Nibali stood center-stage at the Tour de France presentation at the Palais des Congrès and spoke of his desire to defend his yellow jersey in 2015, his Astana manager Alexandre Vinokourov lingered in the aisles and quietly fielded questions on the team’s recent spate of doping cases, which could harm its prospects of participating in the race at all next year. Group moves to align more closely with the UCI: The Movement of Credible Cycling (MPCC) is moving to align its regulations more closely with those of the UCI as it continues to take a firm stance against doping in professional cycling. Photo: And who else but the Colombian can complete our top-five? From his Giro d’Italia winning domination, to stepping up as an ambassador for UNICEF, Quintana has had a pretty happy 2014.
The best and the worst. The warts and all. The highs and the lows. Whatever they were, wherever they happened, over the next few weeks we’re going to put forward our candidates for the performances of the year 2014.
