Photo: Brian Cookson says women at the UCI have warned against introducing a minimum wage for female cyclists as it could lead to fewer professional teams .
UCI president Brian Cookson says introducing a minimum wage for female cyclists would be ‘counterproductive’, and may lead to more professional teams reverting to amateur status.
Upon election in September 2013, Cookson promised to bring in the minimum wage within 12 months, but has reportedly been advised against it by women at the UCI. (cyclingweekly.co.uk)

Nicole Cooke retired at the start of 2013, bringing to an end a highly successful and at times controversial career. Currently studying for her Masters degree at Cardiff University, Cooke, who won gold at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, recently took time out to talk.
"We caught up with her at a book signing for her autobiography in Bath and talked about her career, the difficult relationships she had with cycling’s biggest authorities, the struggles within women’s cycling and doping." (cyclingnews.com)

Mark Cavendish and Michal Kwiatkowski will both make their season debut in January at the Tour de San Luis. Both are looking forward to returning to the race where they have done well in the past. (cyclingquotes.com)

The build up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio has begun, and gathering important UCI points toward qualifying the maximum available athlete allocations will be easier for women in North America in the coming season: the UCI published the 2015 road calendar, which includes seven ranked races for elite women, including three stage races - up from just four one-day races in 2014. Photo: Last weekend’s MFG race in Seattle’s Woodland Park was the best cyclocross course I’ve ridden.
"For me, cyclocross is the most fun you can on a bike in less than an hour! I don’t care much for racing any longer, but ‘cross is a different matter.
Cyclocross is a very technical sport, where leg power counts only for so much. Coordination is equally important. You choreograph your dismounts and run-ups to lose only a minimum of speed. It’s fun when you get it just right: Step off the bike, jump a barrier, and remount, all in one smooth motion." (janheine.wordpress.com)

Bernard Hinault has been criticised for what others have called “blinkered” and “inappropriate" comments relating to doping in cycling and Lance Armstrong. Hinault, a five-time Tour de France winner, made the comments in an interview with AFP earlier this week.
Hinault, 60, pointed out that cycling has often been placed under a great media spotlight in relation to doping. However, when asked about Lance Armstrong, Hinault said, “If I met him today I would not talk to him. I would not even say hello.” (cyclingnews.com)

Photo: The troubles of Astana have been well-documented. Even before the Iglinskiy brothers and their matching EPO tests some were asking questions.
After the highlights, the lowlights. Sport is meant to have its drama but pro cycling often crosses the line from pantomime villainy to worse. Here’s a round-up of some of the lows. (inrng.com)

Photo: I don’t think there was a single “breakthrough” that got me on the US National team, but it was more of a process through their development pathway.
"When our friend Xylon Van Eyck at Corso Sports Management told us they’d taken on rising chronostar Adrien Costa we thought we should have a word with the young American who was second in the World Junior Time Trial Championship in Ponferrada, only losing out to German strongman, Lennard Kamna. But there’s a lot more to this eloquent young man than a Worlds TT silver." (pezcyclingnews.com)

Alex Cano has been successful on the South American circuit, but he also has European experience. Notably, he won the Giro della Valle d’Aosta. Photo: Hector Leonardo Urrego.
Team Colombia is importing one of its country’s top cyclists, Alex Cano, this winter to compete with the big boys in Europe’s stage races.
“We’ve made a few changes for 2015, but the big one is Alex Cano,” Colombia’s general manager Claudio Corti told VeloNews. “He is the most famous cyclist racing in Colombia right now. I say ‘in Colombia’ because of course, in Europe, Nairo Quintana, Rigoberto Urán, and others are already doing quite well.” (velonews.com)

BMC show off their medals after winning the men's TTT at Worlds

The 2014 season proved to be the closest that BMC have come thus far to matching its results to the capabilities of its roster. Philippe Gilbert found patches of his 2011 form, Taylor Phinney appeared on the cusp of his breakout year before breaking his leg, Tejay van Garderen rode to fifth at the Tour, Cadel Evans had a respectable final ‘full season' and while Greg Van Avermaet performed well he didn't have to save his better paid teammates. Southern Florida, to most, lacks the appeal of a cycling mecca, but to Matt McCain and those behind the Everyone Rides charity weekend, the steamy part of the country serves as the ideal place to organize a ride to benefit the young people of Lee County.
Now in its 11th year, Everyone Rides is a charity ride that works to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lee County, Florida, which provide stable after-school programs for local kids. With the help and support of Tour de France champion Greg LeMond, WorldTour riders Tom Danielson and Phil Gaimon, and many other prominent cycling personalities, Everyone Rides is now a sizable event that brings massive financial support to the cause. Photo: The European cycling industry has created some 650,000 jobs according to a new study, with more on the way
Tim De Waele.
Want a job? Get into cycling. That's the message coming from a new study, to be published in December, called 'Jobs and Job Creation in the European Cycling Sector'.
The paper was commissioned by the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), reports the Guardian, and predicts that the number of jobs already created by Europe's cycling industry is now 650,000.
Furthermore, the research, conducted by the Transport and Mobility Leuven Research Institute, points to more than a million jobs being created by 2020 should the number of cycling journeys double across Europe. (bikeradar.com)
